  • Restoration of severly damaged teeth after endodontic treatment had been an interest to many dentists, and it is a fact that there have been lots of studies about it. In these days, although we have used Para-Post, pins, threaded steel post, cast gold post and core, and so on, as a method of restoration frequently, it has been in controversy with the influence of them on the teeth and surrounding periodontal tissue. In this study, we assume that the crown of the upper incisor have severly damaged, so, after the root canal therapy, 4 types of restoration had been carried out; 1) coronal-radicular amalgam restoration, 2) after setting up the Para-Post, restore with composite resin core only, 3) after setting up the Para-Post; restore with amalgam core, then cover with the PPM crown 4) after setting up the Para-Post, restore with composite core, then cover with the PPM crown. After restoration, in order to observe the concentration of stress at internal portion of the teeth and the sourrounding periodontal tissue, developing a 2-dimensional finite element model of labiopalatal section, then loading forces from 3 direction - direction of 45 degrees from lingual side near the incisal edge, horizontal direction from labial height of contour, vertical direction at the incisal edge-were applied. The analyzed results were as follows: 1. Stress of the normal central incisor was concentrated on the dentin aroundpulp chamber, labiocervical portion of a tooth and root apex, but with the alveolar bone, in the case of load from the direction of 45 degrees from lingual side near the incisal edge showed remarkable concentration of stress: 2. Coronal-radicular amalgam technique -showed less concentration of stress on the root and surrounding periodontal tissue than the restoration with the Para-Post. 3. The von Mises equivalent stress on the Para-Post showed maximum value at root-core junction rather than both ends and model with PPM restoration with amalgam core showed the least concentration of stress. Only the force from horizontal direction showed large shear stress on internal portion of the root, root apex and alveolar bone. 4. PPM crown with composite core rarely showed the concentration of stress on root and periodontal tissue. 5. As for alveolar bone, remarkable shear stress was concentrated on labial and palatal side by horizontal load.

  • The load distribution factor (LDF) values of simplified composite H beam panel bridges (SCHPBs) that were subjected to one lane and two lane loads were investigated using three dimensional finite element analyses with the computer program ABAQUS (2007). This study considered some design parameters such as the slab thickness, the steel plate thickness, the span length, and the continuity of the SCHPBs in the development of new LDFs. The distribution values that were obtained from these analyses were compared with those from the AASHTO Standard, LRFD, and the equations presented by Tarhini and Frederick, Huo et al., Back and Shin, and Cai. The AASHTO Standard distribution factors for SCHPBs were found to be very conservative. Sometimes, the distribution values from the finite element analyses for interior girders were similar to the results of the AASHTO LRFD, whereas the values for exterior girders were conservative in most cases. The new distribution values that were presented in this study produced LDFs that are more conservative than those from the finite element method. For the simple application of the design to SCHPBs, bridge engineers can use 0.42 for the interior girder and 0.32 for the exterior girder. The proposed values improve the current design procedure for the LDF problem and increase SCHPB design efficiency.

  • Restorative procedures can lead to weakening tooth due to reduction and alteration of tooth structure. It is essential to prevent fractures to conserve tooth. The resistance to fracture of the restored tooth may be influenced by many factors, among these are the cavity dimension and the physical properties of the restorative material. The placement of direct composite resin restorations has generally been found to have a strengthening effect on the prepared teeth. It is the purpose of this investigation to study the relationship between the cavity isthmus and the fracture resistance of a tooth in composite resin restorations. In this study, MO cavity was prepared on maxillary first premolar. Three dimensional finite element models were made by serial photographic method and isthmus(1/4, 1/3, 1/2 of intercuspal distance) were varied. Two types of model(B and R model) were developed. B model was assumed perfect bonding between the restoration and cavity wall and R model was left unfilled. A load of 500N was applied vertically at the first node from the lingual slope of the buccal cusp tip. This study analysed the displacement, 1 and 2 direction normal stress and strain with FEM software ABAQUS Version 5.2 and hardware IRIS 4D/310 VGX Work-station. The results were as follows : 1. Displacement of buccal cusp in R model occurred and increased as widening of the cavity, and displacement in B model was little and not influenced by cavity width. 2. There was a significant decrease of stress resulting in increase of fracture resistance in B model when compared with R model. 3. With the increase of the isthmus width, B model showed no change in the stress and strain. In R model, the stress and strain increased both in the area of buccal-pulpal line angle and the buccal side of marginal ridge, therefore the possibility of crack increased. 4. The stress and strain were distributed evenly on the tooth in B model, but in R model, were concentrated on the buccal side of the distal marginal ridge and buccal-pulpal line angle, therefore the possibility of fracture increased.

  • This study was to investigate the influence of combining composite resins with different elastic modulus, and occlusal loading condition on the stress distribution of restored notch-shaped non-carious cervical lesion using 3D finite element (FE) analysis. The extracted maxillary second premolar was scanned serially with Micro-CT. The 3D images were processed by 3D-DOCTOR. ANSYS was used to mesh and analyze 3D FE model. A notch-shaped cavity was modeled and filled with hybrid, flowable resin or a combination of both. After restoration, a static load of 500N was applied in a point-load condition at buccal cusp and palatal cusp. The stress data were analyzed using analysis of principal stress. Results showed that combining method such that apex was restored by material with high elastic modulus and the occlusal and cervical cavosurface margin by small amount of material with low elastic modulus was the most profitable method in the view of tensile stress that was considered as the dominant factor jeopardizing the restoration durability and promoting the lesion progression.

  • The characteristics of the torque and torque ripple of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) are influenced by the size and position of the rotor magnet and the size of the stator slot. This paper deals with the optimal design method for improving torque and torque ripplerate for IPMSM using Response Surface Methodology(RSM). Two objective functions of torque output and torque ripple were derived from the sensitivity analysis by Plackett-Burmann(PB) for the characteristic variables affecting torque and torque ripple. Secondary characteristic variables were selected from the derived objective function and RSM secondary regression model function was estimated by the experiment schedule and analysis results according to the Central Composite Design (CCD). The reliability of the secondary regression model was verified using ANOVA table. The analysis according to the experimental schedule was verified by JMAG(Ver. 18.0) which is Finite Element Method(FEM) software. The torque output of IPMSM applied with final characteristic variables was increased torque output by 11.5 % and the torque ripplerate was reduced by 9.1 %.

  • This study deals with displacement analysis of anisotropic folded structures with triangular elements and quadrilateral elements. When folded plates are analyzed, triangular elements as well as quadrilateral elements are needed for conveniences of modelling. However, using triangular elements is not a simple problem. A simple formulation is presented which allows a quadrilateral element to degenerate into a triangular element. Therefore it can easily be used for computational simplicity and avoided complexities on mixed use of triangular element and quadrilateral element. In this paper, a high-order shear deformation theory using only Lagrangian interpolation functions and drilling degrees of freedom for folded plates are utilized for more accurate analysis. Especially, various results of anisotropic laminated and folded composite structures with triangular element and quadrilateral element show the structural behavior characteristics of them.

  • The paper deals with a fully assumed strain soild element that can be used for modeling of thin sensors and actuators. To solve fully coupled field problems, the eledtric potential is regarded as a nodal degree of freedom in addition to three translations in an eighteen node assumed strain soild element. Therefore, the induced electric potential can be calculated for a prescribed load and the actuation displacement can be computed for an input voltage. Since the assumed strain solid element can alleviate locking. A finite element code is developed based on the formulation and typical numerical examples are solved for code validation. Using the code, we have conducted parametric study for THUNDER actuator. It is found that a particular combination of materials for layer curvature of THUNDER improves the actuation displacement.

  • A general stiffener element which includes transverse shear deformation is formulated using the p-version finite element method. Hierarchic C/sup o/-shape functions, derived from Integrals of Legendre polynomials, are used to define the assembled stiffness matrix of the stiffener with respect to the local reference frame is transformed to the plate reference system by applying the appropriate transformation matrices in order to insure compatibility of displacements at the junction of the stiffener and plate. The transformation matrices which account for the orientation and the eccentricity effects of the stiffener with respect to the plate reference axes are used to find local behavior at the junction of the stiffener and the relative contributions of the plate and stiffener to the strength of the composite system. The results obtained by the p-version finite element method are comared with the results in literatures, especially those by the h-version finite element analysis program, MICROFEAP-II.

  • Metal and polymer sandwich composites, which are made of sheet metal sheath and polymer or fiber reinforced plastic core, have been reconsidered as an alternative to sheet metal due to their lightness and multifunctional properties such as damping and sound-proof properties. For the successful applications of these composites, the delamination prediction based on the adhesion strength is important element. In this study, the numerical simulation of the delamination behavior of polymeric adhesive tapes with metallic surfaces was performed using cohesive zone elements and finite element software. The traction-separation law of the cohesive zone element was defined using the fracture energy derived from peel mechanics and experimental results from peel test and implemented in finite element software. The peel test of the polymeric adhesive film against steel surface was simulated and compared with experiments, demonstrating reasonable agreement between simulation and experiment.
