  • Sub-micron colloidal silica particles coated with nano-sized ceria were prepared by mixing of its silica and cerium salts hydrolysis, and modified by hydrothermal reaction. By using the slurries with and without hydrothermal modification containing above particles, oxide film coated on silicon wafer was polished. The modified slurries had higher polish rate due to increase of ceria fraction to silica through hydrothermal reaction. They revealed higher stability in wide range of pH $2\~10$ than ceria coated silica slurries without its modification.

  • Triboelectric nanogenerators and piezoelectric nanogenerators are a spotlighted energy harvesting method that converts the wasted mechanical energy from the environment into usable electrical energy. In the case of triboelectric nanogenerators, researches have been mainly focused on high permittivity and flexible polymer materials, and in the case of piezoelectric nanogenerators, researches have been focused on ceramic materials exhibiting high polarization characteristics. Recently, many researches have been conducted to improve durability and power in various environments by using composite materials which have flexible properties of polymer, high permittivity, thermal resistance and high polarization properties of ceramics. This article reviews the energy harvesting studies reported about composites materials using ceramics and polymers.

  • In order to study the semi-conductive characteristics of carbon black-filled ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composite film, which is used for measuring occlusal force, composite samples with volume ratios of carbon black to EPDM ranging from 30% to 70% were prepared. The process of making a composite film consists of two steps, which involve the preparation of a slurry composition and the fabrication of a thin film using solution casting and a lamination process. To prepare the slurry composition, we dispersed carbon black nanoparticles into an organic solvent before mixing with an EPDM solution in toluene. The mechanical and electrical properties of the resulting carbon black-filled EPDM film were then investigated, and the results showed that the electrical resistance of a film decreases with the increase in the carbon black content. Furthermore, improved elastic recovery was observed after cross-linking the EPDM.

  • InP quantum dots (QDs) have attracted researchers' interest due to their applicability in quantum dot light-emitting displays (QLED) or biomarkers for detecting cancers or viruses. The surface or interface control of InP QD core/ shell has substantially increased quantum efficiency, with a quantum yield of 100% reached by introducing HF to inhibit oxide generation. In this study, we focused on the control of bandgap energy of quantum dots by changing the Zn/(In+Zn) ratio in the In(Zn)P core. Zinc incorporation can change the photoluminescent light colors of green, yellow, orange, and red. Diluting a solution of as-synthesized QDs by more than 100 times did not show any quenching effects by the Förster resonance energy transfer phenomenon between neighboring QDs.

  • The purpose of this study is to know whether Yttrium-stabilized-tetragonal -zirconia-polycrystal(Y-TZP ceramic) gets enough shear bond strength for clinical uses by applying veneering composite resin through surface treatment on it and finally to compare it with the case of applying veneering porcelain. LavaTM zirconia frameworks(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) were prepared. Group P was manufactured with LavaTM Ceram(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) in cylindrical shape which has 4mm diameter, 5mm height. Group ZSR disposed sandblasting and applied silane, bonding agent and after that indirect composite resin was applied. Group ZRR got tribochemical coating by RocatecTM system(3M ESPE. Seefeld, Germany) and treated silane. Finally Group ZPR took the same treatment and applied LavaTM Ceram in the size of 0.3-0.5mm height. After burning out, sandblasting, HF and silane was applied. And then, indirect composite resin was applied. 1000 cycle thermocycling was performed in $5-55^{\circ}C$ and shear bond strength was measured. There were no significant differences between combining veneering porcelain to Y-TZP ceramic group and combining veneering resin to Y-TZP ceramic group in the aspect of shear bond strength (p>.05).

  • AlSi-Al$_2$O$_3$ composite layer was prepared by plasma spray on steel substrate. The composite powder for plasma spray was prepared by simple mechanical blending. The wear resistance of the composite layers and matrix aluminum alloy were performed in terms of size distribution of ceramic particles. Friction coefficients of AlSi were decreased with incorporation of $Al_2$O$_3$. The tribological properties of coated layers were affected by the size of incorporated $Al_2$O$_3$ particle. The reinforcement of $Al_2$O$_3$ particle into aluminum alloy matrix decreased the friction coefficient as well as wear loss.

  • Hydroxyapatite(HAp)-zirconia composite ceramics were prepared by simplified synthesis process and then their properties were investigated. Composite powders of HAp and zirconia were successively synthesized under Ca/P=1.69, 1.71, 1.73 and pH=11 by precipitation method. HAp-zirconia ceramics were obtained with sintering of these various HAp-zirconia composite powders. These sintered bodies were mainly composed of HAp and ZrO2(tetragonal), but it was found that a little of HAp was decomposed into TCP as the amount of zirconia and the sintering temperature were increased. When HAp having 10~15wt.% ZrO2 content were sintered in the range of 1150 to 130$0^{\circ}C$, the apparent porosity was about 7~11%. This showed that the successive synthesis process employed here had a limit to obtian more densified composite ceramics.

  • Al2O3-coated SiC composite powder and mechanically mixed Al2O3-SiC composite powder were synthesized using Al-isopropoxide and commercial SiC as the starting materials. Experiment results showed that the sinterability of Al2O3-coated SiC composite powder was more improved than the mechanically mixed Al2O3-SiC composite powder by the effect of homogeneous coating of alumina around SiC particles. Hence, the mechanical properties of the former was also much more improved than the latter.

  • Alumina-zirconia composite powders for the purpose of improving fracture toughness and thermal shock resistance of alumina were prepared by the emulsion-kerosene drying method. The average particle size of composite powders was less then 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and their shapes were spherical. It was shown that the average particle size of composite powders decreased with the concentration of metal-salt in solution and the amount of span 80 added when preparing emulsions. The structure of all zirconia in composite powders heat-treated at 1200$^{\circ}C$ was a tetragonal form at room temperature. This result implied that fine zirconia particles were homogeneously dispersed in the alumina matrix.

  • (Ti.Si)C composite powders were synthesized by SHS method using microwave energy. Compositional and structural characterization of the powder were carried out by using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The average particle size of the synthesized (Ti.Si)C composite powders was smaller than that of the starting materials. From the results of the temperature profile, combustion temperature and velocity were decreased with increasing Si molar ratio. With increasing C molar ratio combustion temperature and velocity did not change. (Ti.Si)C composite was sintered at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min by using hot-pressing with 30 MPa. The best properties were obtained from the sintered specimen whose composition was 1 : 1 : 1.9 molar ratio of Ti : Si : C. The sintering density, flexural strength and vickers hardness of the sintered body were 4.71 g/㎤, 423 MPa and 21 GPa, respectively.
