  • Determining the layout of temporary facilities that support construction activities at a site is an important planning activity, as layout can significantly affect cost, quality of work, safety, and other aspects of the project. The construction site layout problem involves difficult combinatorial optimization. Recently, various artificial intelligence(AI)-based algorithms have been applied to solving many complex optimization problems, including neural networks(NN), genetic algorithms(GA), and swarm intelligence(SI) which relates to the collective behavior of social systems such as honey bees and birds. This study proposes a site facility layout optimization algorithm based on self-organizing maps(SOM). Computational experiments are carried out to justify the efficiency of the proposed method and compare it with particle swarm optimization(PSO). The results show that the proposed algorithm can be efficiently employed to solve the problem of site layout.

  • The present experimental study is focused on the application of multi-point simultaneous measurement by PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) to guide vane region within diffuser pump. Various different kinds of rotational velocity were selected as experimental condition. Optimized cross correlation identification to obtain velocity vectors is implemented with direct calculation of correlation coefficients. Fine optical setup concerned with PIV performance is arranged for the accurate PIV measurement of high-speed complex flow. Variable flow pattern are represented quantitatively at the stator region.

  • An algorithm of 3-D particle image velocimetry(3D-PIV) was developed for the measurement of 3-D velocity field of complex flows. The measurement system consists of two or three CCD camera and one RGB image grabber. In this study, stereo photogrammetty was applied for the 3-D matching of tracer particles. Epipolar line was used to decect the stereo pair. 3-D CFD data was used to estimate algorithm. 3-D position data of the first frame and the second frame was used to find velocity vector. Continuity equation was applied to extract error vector. The algorithm result involved error vecotor of about 0.13 %. In Pentium III 450MHz processor, the calculation time of cross-correlation for 1500 particles needed about 1 minute.

  • The study contributes in the treatment of waste generated by the textile complex cotton of Draa Ben Khedda, Algeria. The azo dye "Direct Red Solophenyle 4GE" represents the base particle of the discharges and electrocoagulation with nanofiltration are used as a means of treatment. The solar photovoltaic is suitable for electrochemical process to reduce the energy cost. Several study parameters are considered in this work. The electrocoagulation batch gives the best reduction 37% for a dye concentration of 7.21 mg/L ($[NaCl]_{added}$=1g/L; $j=25.2mA/cm^2$). Coupling methods (electrocoagulation-nonofiltration) gives a complete discoloration rejecting concentration 52.4 mg/L (pHi = 7.6, $[NaCl]_{added}$=3g/L, $j=2.13mA/cm^2$). The result shows the coupling efficiency with a reduced amount of resulting slurry at the end of treatment.

  • Micromagnetism explores magnetic configurations in nano-scales to visualize the details of magnetic domain structures, and also can produce snapshots of complex remanence or other magnetic states. The particle shape has a profound effect on the magnetic hysteresis. For instance, octahedral magnetite showed higher coercivity and squareness than cubic magnetite.

  • We investigate an internal flow pattern of an evaporating droplet where the contact line non-uniformly recedes. By using tomographic Particle Image Velocimetry, we observe a three-dimensional azimuthal vortex pair that is maintained until the droplet is completely dried. The non-uniformly receding contact line motion breaks the flow symmetry. Finally, a simplified scaling model presents that the mechanical stress along the contact line is proportional to the vorticity magnitude, which is validated by the experimental results.

  • Complex alkoxides were synthesized using metal alkoxide method and were then hydrolyzed to prepare the precursors using sol - gel method. Then, the precursors were calcined in order to make barium hexaaluminate. Factors affecting the material properties of the barium hexaaluminate precursors were studied and they are the kinds and amount of alcohols, and reaction time. In addition, in the course of hydrolysis, the effects of the amount of water, reaction temperature and aging time were also studied in terms of the specific surface area and average particle size of the barium hexaaluminates.

  • Polystyrene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PS/MWCNT) composites were prepared by the use of latex technology. The monodisperse PS latex was synthesized by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization from styrene/potassium persulfate/water system in the presence of ethanol. The MWCNTs were first treated with acid mixture to eliminate impurities, dispersed in deionized water driven by ultrasonicator, and then mixed with the PS latex. From these mixtures, PS/MWCNT composites were prepared by freeze-drying and subsequent compression molding. In the small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, both complex viscosity and storage modulus increased with increasing MWCNT content. A pronounced effect of MWCNT content was observed, resulting in larger storage modulus and stronger yield behavior at low frequencies when compared to unmodified PS. It showed a transition from viscous to elastic behavior with increasing MWCNT content. Over the MWCNT content of 3 wt%, the storage modulus was higher than the loss modulus across all frequencies.
