  • This paper deals with friction-induced vibration of disc brake system under constant friction coefficient. A linear, finite element parameter model to represent the floating caliper disc brake system is proposed. The complex eigenvalues are used to investigate the dynamic stability and in order to verify simulations which are based on the FEM model, the experimental modal test and the dynamometer test are performed. The comparison of experimental and simulation results shows a good agreement and the analysis indicates that mode coupling due to friction force is responsible for disc brake squeal. And squeal type instability is investigated by using the parametric rotor simulation. This indicates parameters which have influence on the propensity of brake squeal. This helped to validate the FEM model and establish confidence in the simulation results. Also they may be useful during real disk brake model.

  • This paper is concerned with a mixed control with aerodynamic fin and side thrusters applied to an agile missile using two-time scale dynamic inversion and linear time-varying control technique. The nonlinear dynamic inversion method with the weighting function allocates the desired control inputs (aerodynamic fin and side thrusters) to track a reference trajectory, and the time-varying control technique guarantees the robustness for the uncertainties. Closed-loop stability is achieved by the assignment of the extended-mean of these linear time-varying eigenvalues to the left half complex plane. The proposed schemes are validated by nonlinear simulations.

  • This paper describes mathematical models of the torsional geared driving system for the indexing path and the mill driving path in a mill turret. The eigenvalue analysis for the models is conducted both with and without the gear contact stiffnesses. The natural frequency leads to the effect of gear contact stiffnesses on the vibration of torsional geared systems in a mill turret. It is necessary to analyze eigenvalues of the complex geared torsional system in order to prevent the unexpected vibrations.

  • A new stabilization scheme is proposed in which the local state feedback is utilized in each decentralized controller for large-scale interconnected systems. In the proposed scheme, the controller is designed in two steps. First, the feedback gain of each decentralized controller is temporarily chosen so that the eigenvalues of each isolated subsystem are placed at the desired locations in the complex plane. Secondly, the feedback gain of each controller is compensated so that the time derivative of the Lyapunov function candidate for the overall closed-loop system should be negative. A sufficient condition which assures the global system to stable is given.

  • This paper describes the FEM analysis for squeak problem of the ceramic-on-ceramic hip joint system. The onset of hip squeak is estimated by the positive real parts of the eigenvalues in the hip joint system. From the complex eigenvalue analysis, the unstable frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are determined at the certain severe friction coefficients. It is found that some bending and torsion modes of the femoral stem can be unstable due to the mode-coupling mechanism. It also shows that the magnitude of the friction coefficient plays a key role on the occurrence of hip squeak.

  • Let M be a smooth real hypersurface in complex space of dimension $n$, $n{\geq}3$, and assume that the Levi-form at $z_0$ on M has at least $(q+1)$-positive eigenvalues, $1{\leq}q{\leq}n-2$. We estimate solutions of the local $\bar{\partial}$-closed extension problem near $z_0$ for $(p,q)$-forms in Sobolev spaces. Using this result, we estimate the local solution of tangential Cauchy-Riemann equation near $z_0$ in Sobolev spaces.

  • The problem of eigenvalue and eigenvector for v-notched cracks in pseudo-isotropic and anisotropic dissimilar materials was obtained to discuss stress singularities from traction free boundary and perfect bonded interface conditions assuming like the form of complex stress function for v-notched cracks in an isotropic material. Eigenvalues were solved by a commercial numerical program, MATHEMATICA. The relation between wedged angle and material property for eigenvalue, ${\lambda}$ indicating stress singularities of v-notched cracks in pseudo-isotropic and anisotropic dissimilar materials was examined.

  • This paper examines that it is possible to apply RWCIM for determining eigenvector coefficients associated with eigenvalues for V-notched cracks in anisotropic dissimilar materials using the complex stress function. To verify the RWCIM algorithm, two tests will be shown. First, it is performed to ascertain whether predicted coefficients associated with eigenvectors are obtained exactly. Second, it makes an examination of the state of stresses for FEM and RWCIM according to a number of eigenvectors at a location far away from the v-notched crack tip.

  • In this paper, we propose novel eigenstructure assignment method in full-state feedback for linear time-invariant MIMO system such that directions of some left eigenvectors are exactly assigned to the desired directions. It is required to consider the direction of left eigenvector in designing eigenstructure of closed-loop system, because the direction of left eigenvector has influence over excitation by associated input variables in time-domain response. Exact direction of a left eigenvector can be achieved by assigning proper right eigenvector set satisfying the conditions of the presented theorem based on Moore's theorem and the orthogonality of left and right eigenvector. The right eigenvector should reside in the subspace given by the desired eigenvalue, which restrict a number of designable left eigenvector. For the two cases in which desired eigenvalues are all real and contain complex number, design freedom of designable left eigenvector are given.

  • A new small signal stability analysis method for eigenvalue analysis is presented. This method utilizes the Resistive Companion Form (RCF) for the computation of the transition matrix over a specified time interval, which corresponds to a single cycle operation of the system. This method is applicable to any system, with or without switching element. An illustrative example of the method is presented and the eigenvalues are compared with those of the conventional state space method (analog) in order to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed eigenvalue analysis method. Also, the variations of oscillation modes that are caused by the switching operation can be precisely analyzed using this method.
