We empirically investigate the determinants of a firm's exit from exporting, using Korean manufacturing firm-level data for the period from 2006 to 2014. Specifically, we estimate the effects of not only firm-level and industry-level characteristics, but also macroeconomic variables on the probability that a firm stops exporting by applying a Complementary Log-Log Model analysis. The results of our estimation suggest that firm-level heterogeneity, such as workforce size, capital intensity, intangible assets and foreign ownership, industry-level variation, such as the labor displacement rate, and macroeconomic variables, such as domestic demand and world demand, significantly affect the possibility of a firm ceasing exports. Also, we show that market interest rates increase the possibility of an export cessation and that the effects of market interest rates are more pronounced on firms with a higher debt ratio. In the primary exporting industries, the probability of a firm ceasing exports decreases as productivity at the firm rises.
This paper is a study to analyze when ISV(independent software company) has more active participation in the platform ecosystem. According to previous studies, companies are active in technological innovation when they can appropriate the outcome of innovation and when they have complementary assets (marketing, manufacturing capabilities, etc.) that can convert the innovation into value. The effect of these two conditions to join platform ecosystem is investigated. The duplication between the ISV's product portfolio and platform service is also included as an independent variable. The two sample groups are composed of independent SW companies that signed a partner agreement with platform companies and non-participating companies in the platform. As a result of empirical study, it is found that the patent rights do not affect participation in the platform. The ISVs might have believed that the benefits from cooperation with platform companies are greater than the risks of exposure to innovative technologies and unique Biz models. On the other hand, downstream's capability and the duplication of product portfolio affect participation in the platform. If ISVs have the downstream capability to transform cooperation into value creation, ISVs are actively participating in the platform. In addition, cooperation is active when the product portfolio is complementary to platform service rather than competition. This study is the empirical study of open innovation between Korean independent software companies and digital platform companies. There are similar prior studies abroad, but there are no similar studies in Korea. It is meaningful in that the determinants of platform ecosystem participation were investigated through empirical analysis by composing a sample group of companies participating in the platform ecosystem and companies not participating in the platform ecosystem.
In a turbulent environment, it is important for a firm to obtain competitiveness through acquiring new technologies and new knowledge. Many studies has shown that R&D has positive effects on innovation and performance. However, the limitation of resources and research personnel for SMEs leads to the needs of collaboration between government R&D and SMEs. The quantitative results of government R&D comes in the form of patents or publication of papers while the qualitative results comes in the form of commercialization (revenue increase or cost reduction) of the SMEs acquiring the technology through technology transfer. Korean government invested 16.9 Trillion Won in 2013 and achieved remarkable quantitative results but the qualitative results are still yet to be improved. The technology transfer rate in 2011 was 26.0% while the success rate of commercialization of the transferred technology is only 23.6%. Therefore it is meaningful to study the success factors of the technology commercialization in Korea. In this study, a case of technology commercialization between ETRI and Initech is studied. Initech was a venture firm which started in 1997 with 2 employees and after transfer of technology from ETRI in 1999, it has grown to a firm of 238 employees. In this study, Jolly's commercialization model was used to analyze the success factors of the commercialization. It was shown that four main factors that leads to the success are (1) mobilizing interest and endorsement through customer oriented R&D by ETRI, (2) mobilizing resources for demonstration through systematic technology commercialization process by ETRI, (3) mobilizing market constitutents through government standardization that leads to the reliability of the participants, and (4) mobilizing complementary assets for delivery by management strategies of Initech.
Recent years have witnessed various attempts of firms to acquire new knowledge. Purchasing intellectual property or merger and acquisition (M&A) can be such attempts, but joint venture can also be an effective way internalizing new complementary assets from external partners. However, due to difficulties in the formation and implementation of learning strategies, many joint ventures have failed to acquire necessary knowledge. In this respect, based on contingency theory and dynamic capability, the current research aims to investigate the failure case of knowledge transfer in an international joint venture - KEFICO established by Hyundai motors and BOSCH. Case firm optimized for hardware technology but did not establish a differentiated learning strategy and organizational structure to acquire software skills, which are intellectuals of different natures. Due to this inconsistency, it was not able for KEFICO to absorb new type of knowledge (skills related to engine control system). This study suggests the theoretical framework illustrating the case and provides some important implications for organizational learning.

Horizon Run 5 (HR5) is a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation which captures the properties of the Universe on aGpc scale while achieving a resolution of 1kpc. This enormous dynamic range allows us to simultaneously capture the physics of the cosmic web on very large scales and account for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies on much smaller scales. On the back of a remarkable achievement of this, we have finished to run follow-up simulations which have 2 times larger volume than before and are expected to complementary to some limitations of previous HR simulations both for the study on the large scale features and the expansion history in a distant Universe. For these simulations, we consider the sub-grid physics of radiative heating/cooling, reionization, star formation, SN/AGN feedbacks, chemical evolution and the growth of super-massive blackholes. In order to do this project, we implemented a hybrid MPI-OpenMP version of the RAMSES code, 'RAMSES-OMP', which is specifically designed for modern many-core many thread parallel systems. These simulation successfully reproduce various observation result and provide a large amount of statistical samples of Lyman-alpha emitters and protoclusters which are important to understand the formation and expansion history of early universe. These are invaluable assets for the interpretation of current ΛCDM cosmology and current/upcoming deep surveys of the Universe, such as the world largest narrow band imaging survey, ODIN (One-hundred-square-degree Dark energy camera Imaging in Narrow band).
A cultural ecosystem service(CES), which is non-material benefit that human gains from ecosystem, has been recently further recognized as gross national income increases. Previous researches proposed to quantify the value of CES, which still remains as a challenging issue today due to its social and cultural subjectivity. This study proposes new way of assessing CES which is called Cultural Service Opportunity Spectrum(CSOS). CSOS is accessibility based CES assessment methodology for regional scale and it is designed to be applicable for any regions in Korea for supporting decision making process. CSOS employed public spatial data which are road network and population density map. In addition, the results of 'Rapid Assessment of Natural Assets' implemented by National Institute of Ecology, Korea were used as a complementary data. CSOS was applied to Namyangju-si and the methodology resulted in revealing specific areas with great accessibility to 'Natural Assets' in the region. Based on the results, the advantages and limitations of the methodology were discussed with regard to weighting three main factors and in contrast to Scenic Quality model and Recreation model of InVEST which have been commonly used for assessing CES today due to its convenience today.

A firm's competitive capabilities become greater when the firm has a specific knowledge. There are many studies have been examined how to accumulate the firm specific knowledge and to get the competitive capability on the various perspectives. This study suggest that the conceptual framework on the absorptive capability through reviews on the knowledge management theory. And it also suggests that the proposition about the technological capability building process through the in depth case study on a small and medium sized company in a LCD industry. This study found the following major characteristics about the absorptive capability building and knowledge creating process. First, it is required to building an absorptive capability rapidly that the harmony of local capabilities, integrative capabilities, and intensity of effort. And the most important factor is the intensity of effort in a small and medium sized firm with a weak knowledge base. Second, it is required to develop an innovative new product that the utilization of expeditious learning mechanism based on the exploration and exploitation process. Finally, complementary assets are needed to proactive exploration and exploitation. Based on the findings, the theoretical and managerial implications are derives and the further research directions are proposed.

The rates of technological innovation and environmental change as well as market competition have recently accelerated, which makes it difficult for firms to satisfy the needs of their customers through existing product innovation or limited services. Some firms have attempted to find the solutions to this problem by conducting business model (BM) innovation. This study reviews the theoretical discussion to BM innovation and suggests propositions concerning the necessity of BM innovation and conditions of successful BM innovation. Furthermore, the study examines the applicability of the propositions and draws strategic implications by analysing the cases of two world-wide leading firms, AVL and ETAS, in the automobile R&D service sector. In particular, the study investigates how the firms with technological competence in the R&D service sector obtain market performance through BM innovation. Results of this study show that the case firms recognize the necessity of BM innovation based on product (or technology)-service fusion to effectively propose customer value and create corporate profit. Also, the firms exploit firm-specific complementary assets for successful BM innovation. This paper contributes to the literature of innovation management by promoting academic discussion concerning BM innovation in Korea and suggesting strategic implications for further development of R&D service sector and related firms in Korea.
This study investigated the success factors of technology transfer and commercialization in the high-technology industries. We specifically analyzed the case of technology transfer between KETI and probe card company. The main purpose of this research is to seek and analyze the most influential factors which can lead to successful technology transfer and technology commercialization both in terms of government policy and corporation strategy. This research oversees the previous research works. framework setting and case study analysis to derive implications in the following points of views: technology receiver, technology provider, technology's characteristics, technology transfer's process. The important findings of this study are as follows. In the terms of technology receiver, the experience in technology transfer and commercialization, will to support for R&BD and rich technology pool are also important.
