  • The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting lifestyles(Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile HPLP) of Koreans in the Philippines. The sample consisted of 100 Koreans who have lived in Manila, Philippines. Data were collected for two months from Feb, 1 to March 30, 1998. Analysis of the data was done by use of percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The range of total HPLP score was from 73 to 175 and the mean score of that was 117.23. In comparison of mean scores depending on each item of six dimensions, self-actualization dimension tended to show the hightest score(2.98) and responsibility for health dimension, the lowest score(1.83). 2. The HPLP score showed a positive correlation with age(r=.19), social support (r=.39), self-efficacy(r=.52) and perceived health status(r=.27), but a inverse correlation with perceived health care service utilization barriers(r=-.20). 3. By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the HPLP score were self-efficacy(27.2%), social support(5.3%), age(5.3%) and perceived health status(2.9%). These variables made it possible to explain 40.7% of variance in HPLP score.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the predictors of health promoting behavior in postpartal $4{\sim}6$ week women. The sample consisted of 104 postpartal women who experienced a vaginal delivery at four obstetrical clinics located in Kwangju city. Data were collected for two months from June 1 to July 30, 1997. Analysis of the data was done by use of percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coeficients, and Stepwise Multiple Regression. The results of this study were summarized as follows : 1. The range of total HPLP score was from 93 to 182 and the mean score of that was 142.28. In comparison of mean scores defending on each item of six demensions, self-actualization demension tended to showed hightest score(3.33) and exercise & rest demension, the lowest score(2.47). 2. The HPLP score was not significantly different defending on the general characteristics. 3. The HPLP score showed a positive correlation with family-support(r=.51) and self-efficacy(r=.41), but a inverse correlation with perceived barriers(r=-.27). 4. By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that the main influencing factors on the HPLP score were family-support(26%) and self-efficacy (8%). These variables made it possible to explain 34% of variance in HPLP score.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of performing feedback vs repeative tasks on lower extremity motor function and falls efficacy in chronic hemiplegic patients. Methods : 40 hemiplegic patients took part in this study. The average age of the feedback-task group was 68.45 years and 68.20 in the repeative-task group. All subjects participated in the study for 8 weeks, doing exercises 3 per day per week. All participants were assessed by using the Berg balance scale (BBS), the lower-extremity subscale of the Fugel-Meyer assessment of sensorimotor impairment (FMLE), and the falls efficacy scale (FES). The data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Results : After 8 weeks of exercise training, the results of this study were: the BBS and FMLE of hemiplegic patients showed a feedback-task and repeative-task groups (p<0.05). The FES of hemiplegic patients also showed a significant difference between the quantitative-task and qualitative-task groups (p<0.05). Conclusion : We present findings suggesting that chronic hemiplegic patients could improve their standing balance ability better through a feedback-task exercise program, as opposed to a repeative-task exercise program.

  • As the population of the elderly grows, the prevalence of osteoporosis and its related fractures will increase in both men and women. The etiology, preventive and curative strategies of male osteoporosis are relatively unknown and understudied in comparison with those of female osteoporosis. Even currently approved therapies, e.g. bisphophonates, parathyroid hormone, and testosterone for male osteoporosis are in need of further investigation to test their safety and efficacy. Isoflavones which are found in soy have been shown to positively affect bone by stimulating bone formation while concurrently slowing down bone resorption. These observations mainly come from studies that have employed women or female animal models of osteoporosis. Therefore, there is a need to explore the role of soy and its isoflavones in preventing bone loss or rebuilding bone utilizing men or animal models of .male osteoporosis. From the review of existing literature it is too early to state the extent to which men with osteoporosis can benefit from consumption of soy or its isoflavones. In this review, the efficacy of soy and its isoflavones as alternative and/or adjunctive treatment for male osteoporosis will be discussed.

  • Purpose: This study attempted to identify influential variables on smoking temptation between groups: adolescent smokers and adult smokers. Method: A survey was conducted with 376 adolescent smokers in 4 high schools and 451 adult smokers in community settings in South Korea. Univariate statistics and regression were used for data analysis. Result: The most powerful predictor of smoking temptation for adolescent smokers was nicotine dependency. On the other hand, the most powerful predictor of smoking temptation for adult smokers was self-efficacy for smoking abstinence. In the high smoking temptation group, depression and nicotine dependency were the predictors for smoking temptation for adolescent smokers and nicotine dependency and pros for smoking were the predictors for smoking temptation for adult smokers. In the low smoking temptation group, cons for smoking and process of change for smoking abstinence were the predictors on smoking temptation for adolescent smokers and self-efficacy for smoking abstention and pros for smoking were the predictors on smoking temptation for adult smokers. Conclusion: There were different influential variables on smoking temptation according to age groups and level of smoking temptation. Smoking-cessation interventions should be tailored to the level of smoking temptation of the individual smokers.

  • Background: The objective of this study was to describe the extent of pain relief after an epidural steroid injection in the patients suffering from chronic low back pain from herniated disks or lumbar spinal stenosis. Methods: The study was prospectively designed for patients suffering with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) and herniated disks (HD) who were referred to a hospital-based pain clinic for epidural steroid injections (ESI). The pain was assessed with using a visual analog scale at baseline, two weeks after the first ESI and two weeks after the third ESI. Results: Eighty patients were enrolled, and all of them provided pain ratings before and after the injections. The LSS patients seemed to improve less than did the HD patients. The results showed no significant differences in the triamcinolone dosage and the frequency of injections for determining the efficacy of ESI. Conclusions: The LSS patients tended to have a less effective respond to ESIs than did the HD patients. The unsatisfactory response to ESI by the LSS patients underscores the need for randomized controlled trials of performing ESI in this population.

  • The effectiveness of bronopol and bithionol in treating Ichthyobodo sp. infestation in cultured olive flounder was investigated, and compared them with formalin. Bath with formalin at 200 ppm or bithionol at 100 ppm for 1 h showed complete removal of Ichthyobodo sp. from all the experimental fish. Baths with lower concentrations of formalin (50 and 100 ppm) or bithionol (25 and 50 ppm) significantly reduced infection intensities of Ichthyobodo sp. On the other hand, baths with bronopol or intubation of bithionol at various concentrations were not effective against Ichthyobodo sp. infestation.

  • The purpose of this study was designed to develope and test the structural model that explains alcohol consumption behaviors among university students in Republic of Korea. The hypothetical model was constructed on the basis of the literature review and Pender's Health promotion model. Data was collected from questionnaires from 512 university students in Republic of Korea, from August to September, 2000. The reliability of instruments was adequate (Cronbach's alpha= .69-.90). Data analysis was done with SAS 6.12 for descriptive statistics and LISREL 8.13 program for covariance structural analysis. The results are as follows; 1. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate. Thus it was modified by male and female models. 2. The revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the empirical data (male: χ2=87.21 p=.00, GFI=.97, AGFI= .94, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=619.17, female: χ2=49.29 p=.31, GFI=.45, AGFI= .95, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=370.02). 3. Self-efficacy was most significant factor and personality of novelty seeking, reward compensation, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on male alcohol consumption behavior. 4. Personality of novelty seeking was most significant factor and personality of harm avoidance, friend influence, self-efficacies, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on female alcohol consumption behavior.

  • Purpose: This study attempted to identify influential variables on types of smoking in adult smokers, which have been derived from Q-study. Methods: A survey was conducted with 328 adult smokers at community settings in Seoul, South Korea from April 2006 to July 2006. To identify the influential variables related to smoking, variables from the Trans-theoretical model(i.e., self-efficacy for smoking abstinence, smoking temptation, process of change, decisional balance(pros and cons)) and nicotine dependency were analysed by ANOVA. Post-comparison tests were also done. Results: The scores of nicotine dependency and smoking temptation were higher in habitual craving types than any other types, while the scores of self-liberation and self-efficacy for smoking abstinence were higher in self control types than any other types. Conclusion: Specific smoking intervention methods for each of the smoking types needs to be developed, based on how different groups of individuals gets into a decisions to quit smoking within their contexts.
