  • At present there are many theories as to how various lubricants used in forging perform the role of reducing friction. Little work has been carried out to determine the validity of these theories for solid lubricants. This paper covers the development and preliminary results of the experiments devised to illustrate the movement of graphite at the workpiece/tool interface in the work forging temperature range. The paper describes the results obtained from upsetting of rings between two flat dies for measurement of lubricant thickness and compaction of graphite for density-pressure relationship. These allowed the lubricant to be exposed to forging conditions and by applying the principles of Male's ring test the simple generation of a value fur friction factor could also be determined. The experiments have been undertaken to examine the behavior of lubricant for shot blasted surface and change of surface roughness. A simple computer model of the interface has been constructed characterizing the graphite layer in an attempt to simulate the boundary mechanics.

  • The aging characteristics of gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy were investigated and compared to those of cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The gas atomized Mg-6 wt.% Al-1wt.% Zn alloy powders had spherical morphology between 1 and 100 $\mu m$ in diameter. After compaction under the pressure of 700 MPa at $320^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed a grain size of approximately 40 $\mu m$ which is smaller than that of the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy, and a relative compact density of approximately 93%. After ageing, the Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed much faster peak hardness than cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy. The Mg-6 wt.% Al-1 wt.% Zn alloy showed the new fine precipitations with ageing time, while the cast Mg-6 wt.% Al alloy was almost similar morphology.

  • Gas sensing effects produced by adsorptive reaction between specimen surface and gases are expected to be influenced greatly by the state of the speimen surface. In this study, Co1-xMgxO ceramics oxygen sensors were prepared by pressing at 0.3-1.5ton/cm\ulcornerwith or without binder, intending to change porosity and average grain size on the surface purposely. The composition ratio of CoO to MgO was fixed at 1:1(mol.%). Microstructure of prepared Co0.5Mg0.5O ceramics were observed, the electrical properties and the sensitivity characteristics for oxygen gas were investigated in the device temperature range of 700-1000\ulcorner and for oxygen partical pressure range of 1-10**-4 atm. Temperature dependence of the resistivity of the specimen showed NTC behavior, average grain size increased and porosity decreased with increasing compaction pressure. The slope of the resistivity of the specimen on the oxygen partial pressure decreased with increasing average grain size and with decreasing porosity. Particularly, specimen pressed by 0.3 and 0.5 ton/cm\ulcornershowed the highest sensitivity to oxygen gas.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the stability of tunnel for a high speed railway crossing the fault zone. The area where the tunnel crossed the fault zone can be unstable during construction and operation. Geotechnical investigations have been conducted to determine an optimum excavation method by obtaining the material properties around the fault zone and to check the stability of the tunnel. For the numerical analysis, the FLAC, numerical analysis code based on finite difference method, was utilized to analyze the behavior of the fault at three points having typical ground conditions. Based on the results of numerical analysis, the combinations of compaction grouting and LW grouting were determined as suitable methods for pre-excavation Improvement of the ground surrounding the tunnel opening. In conclusion, the stability of the tunnel construction for the high speed railway within the fault zone may be obtained by adopting the optimum excavation method and the reinforcement method. The numerical analysis based on FLAC program contains errors caused by assumptions used in numerical analysis, therefore constant monitoring with respect to the change of ground condition and groundwater is highly recommended to minimize the numerical error and the possibility of damage to tunnel.

  • The electrical conductivity of a soil-water system is related to its engineering properties. By measuring the soil electrical conductivity, one may obtain quantitative, semi-quantitative, or qualitative information to estimate the in-situ soil behavior for site characterization. This paper presents the results of electrical conductivity measured on compacted kaolin clay samples using a circular two-electrode cell in conjunction with a specially designed compaction apparatus, which has the advantage of reducing errors due to sample handling and increasing measurement accuracy. The experimental results are analyzed to observe the effects of various parameters on soil electrical conductivity, i.e. porosity, unit weight, water content and pore water salinity. The performance of existing analytical models for predicting the electrical conductivity of saturated and unsaturated soils is evaluated by calculating empirical constants in these models. It is found that the Rhoades model gives the best fit for the kaolin clay investigated. Two general relationships between the formation factor and soil porosity are established based on the experimental data reported in the literature and measured from this study for saturated soils, which may provide insight for understanding electrical conduction characteristics of soils over a wide range of porosity.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were performed to investigate the stress concentration ratio, bearing capacity and deformation modes of piles in clay ground improved by granular piles with two types of pile (CSCP, SCP) and various replacement ratios (0, 20, 40, 60%). According to the results of tests, the load ratio of ground improved by SCP and CSCP proportionally increased as replacement ratio increased. It shows that average normalized load of ground improved by CSCP is higher by about $8{\sim}21%$ than by SCP. As a result of rigid loading tests, it was evaluated that average stress concentration ratio of CSCP is higher than that of SCP. Only expansion failure occurred in CSCP, whereas SCP showed the expansion and shear failure simultaneously.

  • Sand Compaction Pile and Stone Column method have been used in widely during several decades as a technique to reinforce soft soils and increasing ultimate bearing capacity, accelerate consolidation settlement of the foundation ground. Stone column method, making a compaction pile using crushed stone, is a soft ground improvement method. However, stone column method is difficult to apply to the ground which is not mobilized enough lateral confine pressure because no bulging failure resistance. Hence, in present study, development the geogrid reinforced stone column system for settlement reduction and wide range of application of stone columns. To develop this system, triaxial compression tests were conducted for evaluation which is about behavior characteristics of stone column on replacement rate and confine pressure. Then, 3-dimensional numerical analysis were evaluated for application of the GRSC (geogrid reinforced stone column) system as evaluate behavior characteristics and settlement reduction effect of stone column reinforced by geogrid on types and reinforcing depth change of geogrid.

  • The construction site for $\bigcirc\bigcirc$ transformer substation was located at a mountain valley. In order to prepare the site, the valley was first filled with crushed rock debris up to 63m. Since the main concern of this project is to minimize differential settlement of the foundation of transformer facilities, dynamic compaction was performed every 7m followed by reinforcement with EMP(Ez-Mud Piling). The EMP is one of bored piling methods, in which a hole is bored by means of air percussion and maintain by injecting Ez-Mud. Then a PHC pile (Pretensioned spun High strength Concrete pile) is embedded and finalized with a hammer. In this study, bearing capacities and long term behavior of a pile installed by EMP were investigated. To achieve these objectives, a series of tests such as static and dynamic load tests were conducted. In addition, a construction quality control standard was proposed based on the test results.
