  • This paper presents an approximate analytical solution to a two-region one-dimensional model for the charging process of stratified thermal storage tanks with variable inlet temperature in the presence of momentum-induced mixing. Based on the superposition principle, an arbitrary-varying inlet temperature is decomposed into inherent discontinuous steps and continuous intervals approximated as a finite number of piecewise linear functions. This approximation allows the temperature of the upper perfectly-mixed layer to be expressed in terms of constant, linear and exponential functions with respect to time. Applying the Laplace transform technique to the model equation for the lower thermocline layer subject to each of three representative interfacial conditions yields compact-form solutions, a linear combination of which constitutes the final temperature profile. A systematic method for deriving solutions to the plug-flow problem having polynomial-type boundary conditions is also established. The effect of adiabatic exit boundary on solution behaviors proves to be negligible under the actual working conditions, which justifies the assumption of semi-infinite domain introduced in the solution procedure. Finally, the approximate solution is validated by comparing it with an exact solution obtained for a specific variation of inlet temperature. Excellent agreements between them suffice to show the necessity and utility of this work.

  • Boiling heat transfer characteristics of a two-phase closed thermosyphons with various helical grooves are studied experimentally and a mathematical correlation is developed to predict the performance of such thermosyphons. The study focuses on the boiling heat transfer characteristics of two-phase closed thermosyphons with copper tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal helical grooves. A two-phase closed thermosyphon with plain copper tube having the same inner and outer diameter as those of grooved tubes is also tested for comparison. Water, methanol and ethanol are used as working fluid. The effects of the number of grooves, various working fluids, operating temperature and heat flux are investigated experimentally. From these experimental results, a mathematical model is developed. In the present model, boiling of liquid pool in the evaporator is considered for the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphons. And also the effects of the number of grooves, the various working fluids, the operating temperature and the heat flux are brought into consideration. A good agreement between the boiling heat transfer coefficient of the thermosyphon estimated from experimental results and the predictions from the present mathematical correlation is obtained. The experimental results show that the number of grooves, the amount of the working fluid and the various working fluids are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. Also, the thermosyphons with internal helical grooves can be used to achieve some inexpensive and compact heat exchangers in low temperature.

  • In this paper, we propose a new descriptor for 3D model retrieval based on shape information. The proposed method consists of two steps including ray casting method and spherical harmonic function, considering geometric properties of model. In the ray casting method, an adaptive sampling is performed for external shape information. By increasing shape information included in the descriptor, we improve the discriminating power of the proposed descriptor. The coefficients of spherical harmonic function are adaptively calculated, considering geometric frequency characteristics. This makes the descriptor more compact and concise without decreasing the retrieval performance. By combining two methods, we achieve more improved retrieval results.

  • In this paper, we propose a lossy MTM transmission line unit cell and retrieve the parameter values related with radiation effects. Based on this unit cell model, we plot dispersion diagrams and analyze resonance conditions. We also discuss the input impedance or admittance behavior when we terminate the load as open or short. Then, we examine the quality factor and return loss bandwidth. We also design a very compact unit cell antenna using the provided lossy MTM-TL model. The results based on EM simulations and measurements are shown to be in good agreement with those based on circuit simulation.

  • In this study, a finite element method program code which can be accomodate boundary conditions on the complex surfaces has been developed to simulate polymer extruder processes. The analysis method includes the fractional 4-step method for efficient computation time and compact usage of memory storage to solve the velocities and the pressure values from the Navier-Stokes equation. By using the developed program which was verified with simple Poiseuille flow mixture phenomena in single-and twin-screw extruder are analyzed. It is concluded that the proposed method resulte Poiseuille Poiseuille d in fair agreement with the exact solution of simple flow and the back flow near the entrance happens in single-screw model. It is identified that the location and values of maximum pressure in the twin screw extruder model. It is expected that the Velocity field found can be used to predict the degree of mixture in the extruder barrel.

  • The present work has been developed the interpretation processor including analysis of the failure stress in pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device, which has the release characteristic without fragmentation and pyro-shock, using SoildWorks, COSMOS Works and ANSYS programs. The aim of the invention is to propose a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. The pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device according to the invention is simple, compact and inexpensive in structure. It is simple to implement and permit the use of only a reduced quantity of pyrotechnic composition, such composition possibly being devoid of any primary explosive at all. The present work is only focused on the design of structure and the material characteristics. To analyze the fracture morphology resulted from tensile test in the different ball type bolts, the present work has been performed to estimate the failure stress of material and to make the same result from tensile test. The failure stress of SUS 630 in ductile material is approximately 1050 Mpa. The failure stress of SUS 420 in brittle material is about 1790 Mpa. Among the models used the ductile material, the model 6 is suitable a design of structure compared to that of other models. The use of this interpretation processor developed the present work could be extensively helped to estimate the failure stress of material having a complex geometry such as the ball type bolt

  • The Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), one of the six advanced reactor types of the 4th generation nuclear energy systems, has many impressive features including economic advantages, inherent safety and nuclear non-proliferation. This paper introduces a system analysis code named TREND, which is developed and used for the steady and transient simulation of MSRs. The TREND code calculates the distributions of pressure, velocity and temperature of single-phase flows by solving the conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, along with a fluid state equation. Heat structures coupled with the fluid dynamics model is sufficient to meet the demands of modeling MSR system-level thermal-hydraulics. The core power is based on the point reactor neutron kinetics model calculated by the typical Runge-Kutta method. An incremental PID controller is inserted to adjust the operation behaviors. The verification and validation of the TREND code have been carried out in two aspects: detailed code-to-code comparison with established thermal-hydraulic system codes such as RELAP5, and validation with the experimental data from MSRE and the CIET facility (the University of California, Berkeley's Compact Integral Effects Test facility). The results indicate that TREND can be used in analyzing the transient behaviors of MSRs and will be improved by validating with more experimental results with the support of SINAP.

  • Prediction methods for cavitation noise are presented. At first, direct numerical simulation of cavitating flow noise has been performed, and acoustic analogy equation based on the cavitation noise modeling is derived. For the direct numerical simulation, a density based homogenous equilibrium model is employed to simulate cavitating two-phase flow and the governing equations are solved with high-order numerical schemes to resolve cavitation noise. The compressible Navier-Stokes equations for mixture fluids are discretized with a sixth-order central compact scheme, and the steep gradient of flow variables and supersonic regions are treated with the selective spatial filtering technique. The direct simulation of cavitating flow noise is performed for a 2D circular cylinder at cavitation number 0.7 and 1. The far-field noise is also predicted with the derived analogy equation. Noise spectrum predicted with the equation is well compared with the result of direct numerical simulation and also agree well with the theory.

  • This paper describes a new method for indoor environment mapping and localization with stereo camera. For environmental modeling, we directly use the depth and color information in image pixels as visual features. Furthermore, only the depth and color information at horizontal centerline in image is used, where optical axis passes through. The usefulness of this method is that we can easily build a measure between modeling and sensing data only on the horizontal centerline. That is because vertical working volume between model and sensing data can be changed according to robot motion. Therefore, we can build a map about indoor environment as compact and efficient representation. Also, based on such nodes and sensing data, we suggest a method for estimating mobile robot positioning with random sampling stochastic algorithm. With basic real experiments, we show that the proposed method can be an effective visual navigation algorithm.

  • The SRM (Switched Reluctance Motor) is composed of silicon steel plates where the rotor structure is simple and laminated without coil winding or permanent magnet, making it mechanically robust and its maintenance and repair excellent. Applying SRM as traction motor for railway vehicle is given consideration because of its ruggedness capability in severe loading condition and its compact structure. Optimal design of SRM is needed to reduce torque ripple to apply SRM for railway traction drive because SRM has high torque ripple. In this paper, switched reluctance motor with three different stator pole shapes is taken for magnetic analysis using 3d finite element method to apply SRM as traction drive for railway vehicle. It is observed that the model 3 added Tooth Tang Depth and Slot Round to stator shape gives the improved inductance and torque characteristic.
