A critical comparison of reflectometry methods for location of wiring faults

  • Aging wiring in buildings, aircraft and transportation systems, consumer products, industrial machinery, etc. is among the most significant potential causes of catastrophic failure and maintenance cost in these structures. Smart wire health monitoring can therefore have a substantial impact on the overall health monitoring of the system. Reflectometry is commonly used for locating faults on wire and cables. This paper compares Time domain reflectometry (TDR), frequency domain reflectometry (FDR), mixed signal reflectometry (MSR), sequence time domain reflectometry (STDR), spread spectrum time domain reflectometry (SSTDR) and capacitance sensors in terms of their accuracy, convenience, cost, size, and ease of use. Advantages and limitations of each method are outlined and evaluated for several types of aircraft cables. The results in this paper can be extrapolated to other types of wire and cable systems.

Design of a Biconical Antenna with Cylindrical Loads for EMI Test Site Validation above 1 GHz

  • In this paper, a biconical type antenna is proposed for EMI test site validation above 1 GHz. To achieve broadband and omni-directional radiation patterns required by international standard(CISPR), the proposed antenna consists of general bicones with cylindrical loads and adopts side feeding method to minimize the influence on H-plane pattern due to feeding cable, balun, and connector. The radiation patterns of the fabricated antenna are measured and the results are compared with CISPR criteria and commercial antenna in our interest frequencies. Although the proposed antenna has a few problems in frequency range of 1 GHz to 2 GHz, it has relatively better performance than commercial antenna.

  • Degradation diagnosis of cable is one of major issues for operation and maintenance in overhead distribution power lines. The diagnostic system for overhead power lines is composed of three parts in functional aspect - a travelling unit, a sensing unit and a communication unit. Among them, sensor detects the defects such as corrosion and disconnecting of power lines. Performance of sensor is very important, and besides, the size and structure of sensor is restricted for installation to small and lightweight diagnostic system. This paper suggests an optimal eddy current sensor best suit for small and lightweight diagnostic system in consideration of detecting performance, size and ease of installation and so on. Proposed sensor has been designed by Drum core structure and can be applied to the all domestic overhead power lines regardless of the cross-sectional areas. Also, it is showed that results of mock environmental test are satisfied.

  • The development of Airside Vehicle Control System(AVCS) at Gimpo Airport aims to reduce ground safety accidents in movement area and improve airport operation efficiency and safety management service quality. The vehicle is controlled by a brake controller RTK-antenna and On-Board Diagonostics(OBD) module. Location data is transmitted to a nearby communication base station through a Wi-Fi router and the base station is connected to the AVCS by an optical cable to transmit location data from each vehicle. The vehicle position is precisely corrected to display information using the system. The system allows airport operators to view registered information on aircraft and vehicles and monitor their locations speeds and directions in real time. When a vehicle approaches a dangerous area alarm warnings and remote brake control are possible to prevent accidents caused by carelessness of the driver in advance.

  • In this study, the applicability of the microseismic monitoring system based on the underground mine communication system has been verified by operation test in the domestic underground mine. The microseismic data consists of wavelet data and meta-data for mine safety management, and both data should be transferred, stored, analyzed and managed with proper method according to the purpose and size of each data. In order to select the optimal communication system for the microseismic monitoring system considering the underground environment as well as properties of data, various types of communication system have been tested and compared during operation test after installing the optical cable communication system, 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz wireless communication system through the underground mine tunnel and overground area of the test site. The integrated microseismic monitoring software, which was developed to secure the stability of data management and ease of use, has been updated according to findings from operation test. Through the operation test of the microseismic monitoring system including the communication system and the monitoring software, the technical basis was established corresponding to various requirements of the domestic mine for adoption of the microseismic monitoring system.

  • For the EMC test, the radiation characteristics and immunity characteristics of the EUT are measured under the condition that the EUT maintains its normal operation. For normal operation of the EUT, it is necessary to operate the EUT and monitor its status through separate equipment outside the anechoic chamber. External equipment operates and monitors the EUT through various communications such as 1553B communication, RS-485 communication, and Ethernet communication. At this time, external equipment can transmit noise through the communication line. This noise is transmitted to the LISN through the connected power cable and measured. It is also radiated through the connection terminal to the LISN. In this case, the communication line is the power line It should be designed so that noise is not transmitted through electromagnetic isolation as much as possible. In addition, noise from external equipment must be suppressed as much as possible from entering the chamber through the communication line. In this paper, external EUT test equipment applied for EMC test It explains the considerations in the design and manufacture of the design and explains the satisfaction of the design through tests including CE and RE.

  • During field survey of ground penetrating radar or borehole radar, we often encounter some problems which could be solved easily by modifying structure of the system such as antenna length, shape or array. In addition, it is necessary that the user could easily modify configuration of the radar system na test various array of antennas in order to verify and confirm numerical modeling results concerning radar antennas. We have developed network-analyzer-based, stepped-frequency georadar system. This system had been comprised with coaxial cable to confirm possibility of the system, then we have upgraded the system to use optical cable that is composed of optical/electric transducers, electric/optical transducers, amp, pre-amp and antennas. The software for the aquisition of data has been developed to control the system automatically using PC with GPIB communication and to display the obtained data graphically. We have tested the system in field survey na the results have been compared with those of RAMAC/GPR system.

  • A new multi constant modulus algorithm (MCMA) for a blind decision feedback equalizer is proposed. In order to avoid the error propagation problem in the conventional DFE structure, Feed-Back Filter coefficients are updated only after Feed-Forward Filter coefficients are sufficiently converged to the steady state. Therefore, it has the problem of slow convergence speed characteristics. To overcome this drawback, the proposed MCMA algorithm uses not only new cost function considering the minimum distance between the received signal and the representative value containing the statistical characteristics of the transmitted signal, but also adaptive step-size according to the equalizer outputs to fast convergence speed of FBF. Simulations were carried out under the certified communication channel environment to evaluate a performance of the proposed equalizer. The simulation results show that the proposed equalizer has an improved convergence and SER performance compared with previous methods. The proposed techniques offer the possibility of practical equalization for cable modem and terrestrial HDTV broadcast (using 8-VSB or 64-QAM) applications.

  • In this paper, we can confirm the result of intuitive interface software implementation for operating a digital PA(Public Address) controller and the performance of audio mixer control part. Developed user interface software provides the maintaining management and control function of digital hybrid mixer. This SW loaded in the integrated control server controls an sound status of the audio mixer TAD-168M and checks the device status for Public Address integrated system. Also, this SW enables the integrated control and the continuous upgrade. Developed SW is connected to TAD-168M with Ethernet and linked to PC Lan port and the 4-port switch, located in the backside of TAD-168M, by LAN cable for communicating with operating PC. Integrated control including system management, audio control and uplink broadcasting control for broadcasting system will be made available with this novel developed system.

  • Due to growth of electronics and control devices, automation and situational awareness systems have been applied by automobile. Vision systems with the introduction of unmanned system being actively developed, but are still high price and visual information is passed through the cable, because of cars are difficult to install. In this paper, can be installed inside the car at low-cost, simple image processing device through a wireless communication know the obstacles and the alarm system based on Zigbee wireless communication, infrared and ultrasonic sensors to monitor the situation through with easy parking cars outside the system design was implemented.
