Analytical Performance Evaluation of Superdetonative Mode Ram Accelerator; Considering Influence of Aluminum Vapor

  • In this study, one-dimensional analysis under the assumption of an inviscid flow was conducted for the experiment initiated by the French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL) in order to investigate the energy effect of aluminum combustion. Previous theoretical analysis based on the assumptions of isentropic compression and a constant specific heat derived by ISL claimed that the experiment was not affected by the heat of aluminum combustion. However, rigorous analysis in present investigation that considered the average properties behind the shock wave compression and temperature-dependent specific heat showed that the S225 experiment was partially affected by the aluminum combustion. The increase in heat due to aluminum combustion was estimated from the rigorous analysis.

  • Combustion oriented noise is a part of engine noise, which is mainly determined by the in-cylinder pressure profile and the structure attenuation of an engine. A numerical model for predicting the in-cylinder pressure profile and the resultant combustion noise developed by the use of a commercial code. The model is experimentally validated and updated based on the performance as well as the noise by considering the fuel injection timing, the fuel injection rate, Cetane number, intake temperature, and compression ratio. For providing a design guide of a fuel injector for a low combustion noise engine model, the optimal parameters of injection pressure profile, injection rate profile, and injection timing are determined, which gives the 5 dBA noise reduction.

  • Titanium cabide, TiC-x mole% Al composites, and functionally-graded materials (FGMs) of TiC-x mole% Al were synthesized by an electrothermal combustion (ETC) method. TiC-70 mole% Al composite was not ignited by indirect tungsten coil heating, but can be synthesized by an electrothermal combustion. The velocity of the combustion wave decreased with increasing addition of Al and increased with an increase in the applied electric field. Functionally-graded TiC-Al materials were made from reactant layers with compositions of Ti+C+x moles Al with x ranging from zero to 70 by an electrothermal combustion. In the FGM products a nearly linear change in composition in the graded region was observed in samples with 0$\leq$ x $\leq$ 70 with x being the mole% Al.

  • This work describes a model development and numerical simulation of detailed combustion mechanisms of RDX/GAP/BTIN propellants. The analysis is based on the conservation equations of mass, energy, and species concentrations for both the condensed and gas phases, and takes into account finite-rate chemical kinetics and variable thermophysical properties. The model has been applied to study the combustion wave structures and burning characteristics of RDX/GAP/BTIN propellants over a broad range of pressures. Reasonably good agreement is achieved between the calculated and measured burning rate at atmospheric pressure. But the model calculation does not result in dark zone experimentally observed.

  • Combustion behavior of Fe, CuO, NiO, ZnO and $Fe_2O_3$ powder mixture was carried out by finite element method (FEM) to understand a reaction at iron and metal oxide interface. The FEM was done by using ANSYS Fluent 17.0. Initial and boundary conditions are 1 atmosphere, room temperature, 0.1MPa of oxygen partial pressure, $T_{S1}=1127^{\circ}C$, $T_{S2}=327^{\circ}C$ for a cylindrical shape specimen with dia. $35{\times}80$ [mm]. The maximum combustion temperature is $1537^{\circ}C$ for the condition of conduction, convection and radiation. The combustion temperature and rate are about $847^{\circ}C$ and 3.9mm/sec, respectively. The combustion wave is enough to make ternary ferrite phase like $CuNiZnFe_2O_3$.

연소실 길이에 따른 이중선회 가스터빈 모델 연소기에서 연소불안정 모드 연구 (A Study of Combustion Instability Mode according to the Variation of Combustor Length in Dual Swirl Gas Turbine Model Combustor)

  • This study described the experimental investigations of combustion instability in a model gas turbine combustor. Strong coupling between pressure oscillations and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave, which results in a loud and annoyed sound, and may also lead to a structural damage to the combustion system. In this study, in order to examine the combustion instability phenomenon of a dual swirling combustor configuration, the information of heat release and pressure fluctuation period with respect to the variation in both thermal power and combustor length was collected experimentally. As a result, the fundamental acoustic frequency turned out to increase with the increasing thermal power without respect to the combustor length. The frequency response to the combustor length was found to have two distinct regimes. In a higher power regime the frequency significantly decreases with the combustor length, as it is expected from the resonance of gas column. However, in a lower power regime it is almost insensitive to the combustor length. This insensitive response might be a result of the beating phenomenon between the interacting pilot and main flames with different periods.

  • 횡단류에 분사되는 액체 제트의 분무 및 연소 특성에 대한 수치적 연구를 수행하였다. 수치 계산을 위해 3차원의 분무 및 화학반응 유동 해석에 유용한 KIVA 코드를 횡단류에서의 분무 해석에 적합하도록 수정하여 사용하였다. 액주의 분열과 리거먼트 및 액적의 분열 현상을 해석하기 위하여 wave 모델과 KH-RT hybrid 모델이 사용되었다. 침투길이는 유입공기의 속도가 감소하거나 분사속도가 증가함에 따라 증가하였다. 유입공기의 속도가 증가할수록 계산결과의 오차가 크게 발생함을 알 수 있었다. 연소 특성에 대한 수치 해석으로 연소실 내부의 화염전파 형상과 국부지역에서의 온도및 공해 배출량에 대한 결과를 얻었다.

Effects of High-harmonic Components on the Rayleigh Indices in Multi-mode Thermo-acoustic Combustion Instability

  • This paper presents the characteristics of non-fundamental multi-mode combustion instability and the effects of high-harmonic components on the Rayleigh criterion. Phenomenological observations of multi-harmonic-mode dynamic pressure waves regarding the intensity of harmonic components and the source of wave distortion have been explained by introducing examples of second- and third-order harmonics at various amplitudes. The amplitude and order of the harmonic components distorted the wave shapes, including the peak and the amplitude, of the dynamic pressure and heat release, and consequently the temporal Rayleigh index and its integrals. A cause-and-effect analysis was used to identify the root causes of the phase delay and the amplification of the Rayleigh index. From this analysis, the skewness of the dynamic pressure turned out to be a major source in determining whether multi-mode instability is driving or damping, as well as in optimizing the combustor design, such as the mixing length and the combustor length, to avoid unstable regions. The results can be used to minimize errors in predicting combustion instability in cases of high multi-mode combustion instability. In the future, the amount of research and the number of applications will increase because new fuels, such as fast-burning syngases, are prone to generating multi-mode instabilities.

  • 고성능 액체 로켓엔진에서 일반적으로 사용되는 기체-액체형 분사기가 장착된 연소실의 음향장을 수치적으로 해석하였다. 해당 분사기는 반파장 공명기의 역할을 할 수 있다. 다수의 공명기가 장착된 경우 연소실과 분사기간의 음향학적인 연계성으로 특이한 음향학적 특성이 관측되었다. 분사기 길이가 반파장 공명기 길이에 도달함에 따라 분사기와 연계된 새로운 음향 모드가 나타났으며, 그 음향 모드의 감쇠인자는 상당히 작았다. 따라서, 분사기의 음향감쇠 효과를 최적화 하려면 본래의 반파장 길이보다 약간 작은 길이를 갖도록 해야함을 알았다.

모델 스크램제트 연소기에서 충격파 영향에 대한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study of Shock Wave Effects on the Model Scramjet Combustor)

  • 마하수 2.5인 모델 스크램제트 연소기내에서 초음속 수소-공기 화염에 대한 충격파의 영향을 실험적으로 연구하였다. 본 실험은 충격파가 초음속 화염에 미치는 영향을 연구한 최초의 실험연구이다. 동일한 모양과 크기의 $10^{\cire}$ 쐐기를 연소기 팽창 벽면에 각각 부착시켜 평면경사충격파를 발생시켰고 충격파가 화염에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 쉬릴렌 가시화 사진과 벽면정압, 그리고 두개의 다른 공기온도에서의 연소효율을 측정하였으며, 충격파가 없는 경우와 비교하였다. 충격파에 의해서 화염 모양은 크게 변화하였다. 연소효율은 공기온도에 따라 상이한 결과를 보였는데 공기정체온도가 증가하고 연료유량이 증가한 경우에 충격파에 의한 연소효율은 더 좋은 결과를 보였다.
