  • The BaTiO3 powders extensively used as MLCC (Multilayer ceramic capacitor) in electronic ceramic in-dustry were synthesized by GNP (Glycine-Nitrate process) The powders were prepared using carbonate and alkoxide as starting materials and nitric acid was used as a solvent for starting materials as well as an oxidant for combustion. The BaTiO3 powders were synthesized using different amounts of glycine as a fuel for combustion. The characteristics of synthesized powders were examined with helium pycnometer X-ray diffraction(XRD) Brunauer-Emmett-Teller with N2 adsorption and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). It was found that single phase BaTiO3 could be formed when the as-synthesized powders were heat-treated at 100$0^{\circ}C$ When the glycine/cation molar ratio was 1,2 specific surface area was 24m2/g

  • A numerical study was conducted for the investigation of thermal choking process in a model scramjet engine based on the experimental results at the Australian National University. The results of numerical simulation showed that thermal choking process could be related to the interaction between hypersonic flow and fuel-air mixing process. Especially, we could make sure that turbulent mixing was most important parameter to the thermal choking process.

  • Combustion processes in an optically-accessible single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine equipped with a highpressure common-rail injection system were investigated for JP-8 and diesel. Direct imaging and two-color thermometry were employed to verify the emission trend for both fuels. The combustion process was characterized by image analysis with focus on luminosity. The results of two-color thermometry were analyzed on the basis of the flame temperature and KL factor distribution. Analysis of the combustion process by direct imaging showed that the ignition delay was longer for JP-8 than for diesel, while the flame was extinguished rapidly. Analysis of the flame luminosity showed that the combustion intensity was higher for diesel and that the flame lasted for a longer duration in this case. Two-color thermometry results showed that the high-temperature region extended over a large area during JP-8 combustion, implying the formation of a large amount of $NO_x$. In addition, the KL factor showed low level over a large area and relatively homogeneous in the case of JP-8 combustion, which implied that less smoke was produced when using this fuel.

  • Interest in environmental pollution is increasing all over the world, and technology development to solve it is actively carried out. In areas where heat is used, especially, combustion is causing countless pollutants in the air environment. Combustion catalyst is a technology that reduces NOx and CO by lowering combustion temperature and enabling complete combustion. Traditional combustion catalysts are expensive and complex in the synthesis process using precious metal catalyst. In this study, hexaaluminate, a high-temperature combustion catalyst, was manufactured using urea, and the properties were investigated according to the synthesis time. The combustion performance and characteristics were evaluated using this catalyst. As the temperature increased, the changing methane conversion rate was shown in two patterns. The conversion rates for 1 hour, 9 hours, and 12 hours were similar, while the conversion rates for 3 hours and 6 hours showed similar patterns. Methane combustion performance increased rapidly as the synthesis time increased from 6 hours to 9 hours, whereas the temperature at T50 was approximately 745 ℃. The performance of the synthesized combustion catalyst for 9 hours was optimum as the NOx emission of this combustion catalyst was not present and the maximum emission of CO was 72 ppm.

  • The flow forming process which is one of the technologies to manufacture the various missile propulsion combustion chambers, was analyzed using the rigid plasticity finite element modeling. The numerical analysis was performed using 3 rollers which forms the basic tools for the plastic deformation of the tubes. As a result of this study, the distribution of the plastic strain and the stress are obtained and compared. It was found that there exists a significant difference in the plastic deformation as well as the stress distribution due to the preform initial thickness as a result of these numerical experiments. Moreover, under ideal process condition, flow forming process results in a uniform plastic deformation in the radial direction.

  • The characteristics of combustion process in an internal combustion engine are affected by the mixing process between injected fuel and ambient gas. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the mixture formation process of diesel spray. In this study, the spray structure was visualized by the exciplex fluorescence method, which can provide the simultaneous 2-D images of vapor and liquid phase in inner spray. For accurate investigation, the liquid-phase images were recorded with a 35mm still camera and CCD camera. Consequentially, it could be confirmed that the high-concentration vapor phase is formed in the region of spray tip and the edge of the liquid phase where droplets exist in the evaporating diesel spray, and the formed vapor is spread by diffusion. Also, the distribution of vapor is determined by the motion of droplets that exist in the edge of the liquid phase and the spray-tip region.

  • Numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the base drag characteristics of a base bleed projectile with a central propulsive jet by considering the base homing process. Overall fluid dynamic process is modeled by Wavier-Stokes equations for reacting flows with two-equation $k-\omega$ SST turbulence closure. The combustion process is modeled by finite-rate chemistry with a given partially burned exit condition of the BBU (base-bleed unit). Besides the demonstrating the capability of the present CFD solver for the base drag and the interaction of the base flow with a rocket plume, present study gives an insight into the fluid dynamics and the combustion process of the hybrid-propulsion projectile.

  • The present study aims to investigate the flow characteristics with respect to fuel type and equivalence ratio in the flame spray coating process. The flame spray flow is characterized by much complex phenomena including combustion, turbulent flows, and combined heat transfer. The present study numerically simulated the flam spray process and examined the gas dynamics involving combustion, gas temperature and velocity distributions in flame spray process by using commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code of FLUENT (ver. 13.0). In particular, we studied the effect of fuel type and equivalence ratio on thermal and flow characteristics which could substantially affect the coating performance. From the results, it was found that the gas temperature distributions were varied with different fuels because of reaction times were different according to the fuel type. The equivalence ratio also could change the spatial flame distribution and the characteristics of coated layer on the substrate.

  • In a small high-speed D. I. diesel engine, the injected fuel spray into the atmosphere of the high temperature is burnt by go through the process of break up, atomization, evaporation and process of ignition. These process are important to decide the emission control and the rate of fuel consumption and out put of power. Especially, in the case of injected fuel spray impinging on the wall of piston cavity, the geometry of piston cavity gives great influence the ignitability of injected fuel and the flame structure. Ordinary, the combustion chamber of driving engine have unsteady turbulent flow be attendant on such as the change of temperature, velocity and pressure. So the analysis of spray behavior is difficult. In this study, the spray was impinged on the wall of 3 types of piston cavity such as Dish, Toroidal, Re-entrant type, in order to analyze the combustion process of impinging spray precisely and systematically. And hot wire probe was used for analyze non-steady flow characteristics of impinging spray, and to investigate the behavior of spray, the aspects of concentration c(t), standard deviation σ(t) and variation factor(vf) was measured with the lapse of time.

  • Present-day there are two of theories which have considerable scientific support to explain the knock phenomenon in S.I. engine, the detonation theory and the autoignition theory. But they still have some problems to explain effects of knock parameters, i.e.. compression ratio, spark timing, mixture quality, engine speed, ect, on knocking process in S.I. engine. Accordingly, it is essential to find out whish is more adequate theory of two and to develop the method of analyzing knock phenomenon, that is the aim of this paper. The Authors develop the method of predicting transient temperature and pressure at the end-gas zone during the combustion period and analyze knocking process by this method based on the knock theories. The caluculated values based on the autoignition theory show reasonablly correct relations between knock parameters and knock process but there is no evidence of knock occurred by detonation theory through the calculation according to the all parameters. The authors find out that the autoignition theory is more adequate than detonation theory to analyze knocking process in S.I. engine.
