  • The intake swirl motion, as one of dominant effects for an engine combustion. is very effective for turbulence enhancement during the compression process in the cylinder of 2-valve engine. Because the combustion flame speed is determined by the turbulence that is mainly generated from the mean flow of the charge air motion in intake port system. This paper describes the experimental results of swirl flow and combustion characteristics by using the oil spot method and back-scattering Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in 2-valve single cylinder transparent LPG engine using the liquid phase LPG injection. For this. various intake port configurations were developed by using the flow box system and swirl ratios for different intake port configurations were determined by impulse swirl meter in a steady flow rig test. And the effects of intake swirl ratio on combustion characteristics in an LPG engine were analyzed with some analysis parameters that is swirl ratio. mean flow coefficient, swirl mean velocity fuel conversion efficiency. combustion duration and cyclic variations of indicated mean effective pressure(IMEP). As these research results, we found that the intake port configuration with swirl ratio of 2.0 that has a reasonable lean combustion stability is very suitable to an $11{\ell}$ heavy-duty LPG engine with liquid phase fuel injection system. It also has a better mean flow coefficient of 0.34 to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high performance. This research expects to clarify major factor that effects on the design of intake port efficiently with the optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine.

  • Fe-Al intermetallic compounds were manufactured by using the field-activated combustion synthesis process. Effects of chemical composition(Fe:Al= 3: 1,2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3), Compaction pressure(150, 250, 350MPa) and electrical resistance on the reaction were investigated in this system. As the molar ratio of Al, compaction pressure and electric field increased, the combustion temperature and velocity were increased. The influences for reaction with current adjust way were investigated in this system. But in the absence of a electric field, the reaction could sustain a nonsteady combustion wave and was not completed. The reaction products were characterized with X-ray, SEM and EDXS to determine the structure and composition.

  • American NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) reported that BDF20 could reduce PM, CO, SOx, and cancerogenic matters by 13.6%, 9.3%, 17.6%, and 13% respectively, compared to diesel fuel. BDF20 has been being tested on garbage trucks and official vehicles at Seoul City, which is positive on air environment, but negative on combustion by higher viscosity in winter season. This study investigated the combustion characteristics by applying pilot injection for improving the deterioration of combustibility caused by the higher viscosity of the BDF20 with the combustion flames taken by a high-speed camera and the cylinder pressure diagram. A 4-cycle single-cylinder diesel engine was remodeled to a visible 2-cycle engine taking the flame photographs, which has a common-rail injection system. The test was done laboratory temperature at $5{\sim}6^{\circ}C$. The results obtained are summarized as follows, (1) In the case of without pilot injection, the flame propagation speed was slowed and the maximum combustion pressure became lower. The phenomena became further aggravated as the fuel viscosity gets higher. (2) In the case of with pilot injection, early stage of combustion such as rapid ignition timing and flame propagation was activated since intermediate products formed by pilot injection act as a catalyst for combustion of main fuel.

  • A combustion of CAI engine is purely dominated by fuel chemical reactions. In order to simulate the combustion of CAI engine, it should be considered the effect of fuel components and chemical kinetics. So it needs enormous computational power. To overcome this problem reduced problem of needing massive computational power, chemical kinetic mechanism and multi-zone method is proposed here in this paper. A reduced chemical kinetic mechanism for a gasoline surrogate was used in this study for a CAI combustion. This gasoline surrogate was modeled as a blend of iso-octane, n-heptane, and toluene. For the analysis of CAI combustion, a multi-zone method as combustion model for a CAI engine was developed and incorporated into the computational fluid dynamics code, STAR-CD, for computing efficiency. This coupled multi-zone model can calculate 3 dimensional computational fluid dynamics and multi-zoned chemical reaction simultaneously in one time step. In other words, every computational cell interacts with the adjacent cells during the chemical reaction process. It can enhance the reality of multi-zone model. A greatly time-saving and yet still relatively accurate CAI combustion simulation model based on the above mentioned two efficient methodologies, is thus proposed.

  • The SRT(stability rating test) technique, which is indispensable for the development of a LRE(liquid rocket engine), essentially requires a development of a combustion test sequence as well as artificial perturbation devices. For the development of an indigenous SRT technique, several combustion tests of sub-scale LRE were performed to search a proper combustion test sequence. At first, a pressure-wave inducing device which is used for adapting pulse gun was designed and a cooling gas supply system for the pressure-wave inducing device was set up to prevent a malfunction of pulse gun. Through the several combustion tests which included cooling procedure of a pressure-wave inducing device, a proper combustion test sequence was found out. It did not make any significant disturbance at normal combustion process. Finally, an indigenous SRT technique has been developed successfully.

  • The flame temperature of LPG-air premixture flame was measured by extrapolation of limiting case corresponding to the infinitely thin diameter of Platinum-resistance-hot-wire. LPG-air premixture flame, initially under atmospheric pressure and room temperature, propagates downward from top of the model combustion chamber maintained at constant pressure through the whole combustion process. Analytical calculation technique was also applied to determine full temperature history or spatial temperature distribution from flame reaction zone to burnt gas region.

  • The characteristics of flame dynamics occurring near bluff body was experimentally investigated in a model combustor with V-gutter bluff body. Flashback occurs due to the change of pressure gradient in the combustor, and flashback distance depends on equivalent ratio. Unstable flames can be classified into three types depending on the flashback distance and structure. Re-stabilization takes place as the flame moves downstream. This process is supported by a strong vortex structure behind bluff body.

  • The treatment of city life wastes is headache problem. Now, only small portion of burnable wastes is burnt at modern process incinerators, the other large portion is buried in the soil by landfill method. The burnable wastes will be increased year by year. The dioxin, the cancer-causing agent, produced by incineration of wastes influences harmful effect to national human health. The new idea of burnable wastes treatment is using the city life wastes as auxiliary fuel of fluidizing bed combustion boiler of large scale coal-fired power plant. The dioxin-free treatment of burnable wastes is sucessfully achieved by burning the wastes, in flyash storm at fluidizing bed combustion boiler.

  • Combustion of coke grains in a pellet used to be modeled using the shrinking core model in the previous indurator simulations. This leads to the discussions about its propriety due to the fundamental assumptions of the model inconsistent with the particle characteristics. The current study presents the grain model as an improvemen, and the differently used reaction models are compared. In addition, the simulations assuming changed particle conditions are conducted to display the effects of using the grain model.

  • The combustion process in gas turbine combustor mainly influenced by flow pattern in combustor, and especially the flow pattern near the nozzle and the shape of recirculation zone affect strongly on the flame stabilization, temperature distribution and combustion efficiency in combustor. In this paper, the author has designed and manufactured transparent simplified model combustors on the basis of K. Suzuki's combustor design method to investigate the effects of swirl number and secondary air hold arrays in axial position on the flow characteristics by adopting the tuft method and 5 hole pitot tube.
