The effect of electric fields on the response of diffusion flames in a counterflow has been investigated experimentally by varying the AC voltage and frequency. The result showed that the flame was stationary with high AC frequency above the threshold frequency, and it increased with the applied voltage and then leveled off at 35 Hz. Below the threshold frequency, however, the flame oscillated with a frequency that was synchronized with the applied AC frequency. This oscillation can be attributed to the ionic wind effect due to the generation of bulk flow, which arises from the momentum transfer by molecular collisions between neutral molecules and ions, where the ions in the reaction zone were accelerated by the Lorentz force.
A general combustion characteristics of forcing nonpremixed jet in laminar flow rates have been conducted experimentally to investigate the effect of forcing amplitude with the resonant frequency of fuel tube. There are two patterns of the flame lift-off feature according to the velocity increasing; one has the decreasing values of forcing amplitude on the lift-off occurrence when a fuel exit velocity is increasing, while the other has the increasing values. These mean that there are the different mechanisms in the lift-off stability of forced jet diffusion flame. Especially, the characteristics of attached jet flame regime are concentrically observed with flame lengths, shapes, flow response and velocity profiles at the nozzle exit as the central figure. The notable observations are that the flame enlogation, in-homing flame and the occurrence of a vortical motion turnabout have happened according to the increase of forcing amplitude. It is understood by the velocity measurements and visualization methods that these phenomena have been relevance to an entrainment of surrounding oxygen into the fuel nozzle as the negative part of the fluctuating velocity has begun at the inner part of the fuel nozzle.

A computational fluid dynamics simulation of pyrotechnic material combustion inside a cylindrical closed vessel was carried out using the Eulerian-Lagrangian method. The 5th order upwind WENO scheme and the improved delayed detached eddy turbulence model were implemented to capture shock waves. The flow structure was analyzed inside the cylindrical vessel with a pressure sensor installed at the side wall center. The analysis revealed that the pressure oscillated because of the shock wave vibration. Additionally, the simulation results with four different sensor tab depths implied that, inside the sensor tab, eddies were generated by the excessively large gap between the sensor diaphragm and the side wall. These eddies caused irregularity to the measured time-pressure curve, which is an undesirable characteristic.

A comprehensive numerical study is carried out to investigate for the understanding of the flow evolution and flame development in a supersonic combustor with normal injection of ncumally injecting hydrogen in airsupersonic flows. The formulation treats the complete conservation equations of mass, momentum, energy, and species concentration for a multi-component chemically reacting system. For the numerical simulation of supersonic combustion, multi-species Navier-Stokes equations and detailed chemistry of H2-Air is considered. It also accommodates a finite-rate chemical kinetics mechanism of hydrogen-air combustion GRI-Mech. 2.11[1], which consists of nine species and twenty-five reaction steps. Turbulence closure is achieved by means of a k-two-equation model (2). The governing equations are spatially discretized using a finite-volume approach, and temporally integrated by means of a second-order accurate implicit scheme (3-5).The supersonic combustor consists of a flat channel of 10 cm height and a fuel-injection slit of 0.1 cm width located at 10 cm downstream of the inlet. A cavity of 5 cm height and 20 cm width is installed at 15 cm downstream of the injection slit. A total of 936160 grids are used for the main-combustor flow passage, and 159161 grids for the cavity. The grids are clustered in the flow direction near the fuel injector and cavity, as well as in the vertical direction near the bottom wall. The no-slip and adiabatic conditions are assumed throughout the entire wall boundary. As a specific example, the inflow Mach number is assumed to be 3, and the temperature and pressure are 600 K and 0.1 MPa, respectively. Gaseous hydrogen at a temperature of 151.5 K is injected normal to the wall from a choked injector.A series of calculations were carried out by varying the fuel injection pressure from 0.5 to 1.5MPa. This amounts to changing the fuel mass flow rate or the overall equivalence ratio for different operating regimes. Figure 1 shows the instantaneous temperature fields in the supersonic combustor at four different conditions. The dark blue region represents the hot burned gases. At the fuel injection pressure of 0.5 MPa, the flame is stably anchored, but the flow field exhibits a high-amplitude oscillation. At the fuel injection pressure of 1.0 MPa, the Mach reflection occurs ahead of the injector. The interaction between the incoming air and the injection flow becomes much more complex, and the fuel/air mixing is strongly enhanced. The Mach reflection oscillates and results in a strong fluctuation in the combustor wall pressure. At the fuel injection pressure of 1.5MPa, the flow inside the combustor becomes nearly choked and the Mach reflection is displaced forward. The leading shock wave moves slowly toward the inlet, and eventually causes the combustor-upstart due to the thermal choking. The cavity appears to play a secondary role in driving the flow unsteadiness, in spite of its influence on the fuel/air mixing and flame evolution. Further investigation is necessary on this issue. The present study features detailed resolution of the flow and flame dynamics in the combustor, which was not typically available in most of the previous works. In particular, the oscillatory flow characteristics are captured at a scale sufficient to identify the underlying physical mechanisms. Much of the flow unsteadiness is not related to the cavity, but rather to the intrinsic unsteadiness in the flowfield, as also shown experimentally by Ben-Yakar et al. [6], The interactions between the unsteady flow and flame evolution may cause a large excursion of flow oscillation. The work appears to be the first of its kind in the numerical study of combustion oscillations in a supersonic combustor, although a similar phenomenon was previously reported experimentally. A more comprehensive discussion will be given in the final paper presented at the colloquium.

A gas driven heat pump (GHP) core design comprises internal combustion engine, compressors incorporated to a cooling/heating system, rubber mountings and belt transmissions. Main excitation farces are generated by an engine, compressors themselves and belt fluctuation. It leads to high vibration level of the mount that can cause damage of GHP elements. Therefore an appropriate design of the mounting system is crucial in terms of reliability and vibration reduction. In this paper oscillation of the engine mount is explored both experimentally and analytically. Experimental analysis of natural frequencies and operational frequency response of the GHP engine mounting system enables to create simplified model for numerical and analytical investigations. It is worked out criteria f3r vibration abatement of the isolated structure. Influence of bracket stiffness between engine and compressors, suspension locations and damper performance is investigated. Ways to reduce excitation forces and improve dynamic performance of the engine-compressor mounting system are considered from these analyses. Implementation of the proposed approach permits to choose appropriate rubber mountings and their location as well as joining elements design A phase matching technique can be employed to control forces from main exciters. It enables to changing vibration response of the structure by control of natural modes contribution. Proposed changes lead to significant vibration reduction and can be easily utilized in engineering practice.

In this study, an experimental study was conducted on the flame behavior, combustion dynamics, and NOx emission characteristics for hydrogen co-firing with the EV burner which is the first stage combustor of GT24. It was confirmed that as the hydrogen co-firing rate increases, the NOx emission increases. This change was elucidate to be the result of a combination of changes in penetration depth due to changes in fuel density, reduction in fuel mixing due to changes in flame position due to increased flame propagation speed, and oscillation of fuel mixedness due to combustion instability. Through pressurization tests in the range of 1.3 to 3.1 bar, NOx emission characteristics under high-pressure operating conditions were predicted, and based on this, the hydrogen co-firing limits of the EV burner was evaluated.

Acoustic responses to pressure oscillations in axisymmetric combustion chamber are numerically investigated to examine the qualitative trend of acoustic instability in liquid rocket engine. Chamber operating condition and excitation frequency of oscillating pressure are selected as exciting parameters of acoustic instability. Artificial perturbation is simulated by total-pressure oscillation with sine wave at chamber inlet. Many approximations and simplifications are introduced without losing the essence of acoustic pressure response. First, steady-state solution for each operating condition is obtained and next, transient analysis is conducted. Depending on operating condition and excitation frequency, the distinct response characteristics are brought. Weak-strength flames and high-frequency excitation tend to cause sensitive acoustic pressure response leading to unstable pressure field. These results are analyzed based on the correlation with acoustic pressure responses from the previous works adopting laminar flamelet model.

A ground hot-firing test (HFT) was carried out to make a close examination into the pressure instability for the 70 N-class hydrazine thruster under development. Monopropellant grade hydrazine was adopted as a propellant for the HFT, and catalyst-bed was filled with $Ir/Al_2O_3$ catalyst. In order to investigate the effects of thrust-chamber diameter on combustion stability, evaluation tests for the development models were performed on three kinds of lower thrust chambers having the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D) of 1.03, 1.13, and 1.26. As results, it was found that low frequency instability (~ 50 Hz) was inherent in the models, and in addition, increase of the L/D and decrease of the operating pressure led to an amplification of pressure oscillation in the test condition specified.

The cavity inside the combustor increases the mixing efficiency of fuel and air by inducing a oscillation of the flow and the recirculation area with a low speed, and enables continuous combustion by maintaining the flame. In this study, the characteristics of the internal flow by change in the shape parameters of the cavity were analyzed through experiments and two-dimensional computational analysis. It was observed that the flow in the supersonic combustor was greatly influenced by various shape parameters of cavity besides L/D. Even with the same L/D, it was confirmed that the flow type varies depending on the depth of the cavity, either open or closed type, and the aft ramp angle of the cavity and the height of the combustor also affect the flow characteristics. As a result, the change in the shape parameters of the cavity had a great influence on the total pressure loss.

This paper presents a misfire monitoring method by using the weight factor. According to OBD II(On-Board Diagnostics) regulations of the CARB (California Air Resources Board), an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) should detect misfires which occur in the internal combustion engine. A misfire is 1311owe4 by post-oscillations for short duration. Sometimes, the amplitude of oscillations may be as high as misfire and can be falsely detected as another misfire. To prevent this, the software designers do not attempt to detect another misfire for this short duration, during which the post oscillations exist. Because of this, ECU does not detect all the misfires and hence, the unstable state of automobile cannot be detected. If this happens for a long time, automobile may get damaged. To solve these problems, this paper suggests a new algorithm to detect misfire by using weighting factor Weighting factor is a concept to distinguish the misfire with the post oscillation and to improve the detection rate. This value of weighting factor is used for counting the misfire. This paper also shows the result of experiment done on a automobile using this software. The software is implemented using ASCET-SD which is preferred in the design of engine control. This paper's result show the possibility of improving the misfire detection by implementing this algorithm.
