The present study was investigated combustion characteristics of methane-air mixtures at stratified charge in a constant volume combustion chamber. The results indicated that even the vety lean mixture, which is normally not flammable in single chamber type, could be burned within. a comparatively short time by using sub-chamber with stratified charge method. And the lean inflammability limit of mixture in a main chamber was about ($\phi_m$cr=O.46, when the equivalence ratio of a sub-chamber was $\phi_s$= 1.0. Initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were decreased and maximum combustion pressure. was increased as the equivalence ratio of both sub and main chamber approached unity. Specifically, initial time of pressure increase and total burning times were greatly affected rather by. the equivalence ratio of sub-chamber than that of main chamber. The maximum combustion pressure was little affected if the total equivalence ratio lies in the same range.
Increasing stringent emissions legislation and requirement of more effective energy used for diesel engine demand the fine control of the fuel injection system. Recently, the electromagnetic fuel injection control system for diesel engine is tried to realize the optimum diesel combustion by the feel back sensing as optical signal of combustion flame. The photo detectors were made for the feed back signal of electromagnetic fuel injection control for small DI diesel engine. Their abilities to detect defining combustion events were examined. By evaluating test results, it was shown that the wider acceptable optical range design of optical probe window face, and selection of installation position and installation method of detector were important point for improving sensing ability. The detector was shown to detect start and end of diffused combustion and maximum point of flame intensity impossible for pressure sensor, and also shown that the maximum point of flame intensity was 75% of accumulated heat release point within the experimental conditions.

It is well known that combustion stability under idle and part-load conditions directly affect fuel economy and exhaust emission. In practice, there have been a lot of studies so that a significant improvement in combustion stability has been achieved in this research field. However, applying published results to the development process of mass production engine, there are still many problems which are solved previously. In this study, initial flame behavior and flame propagation characteristic were investigated statistically in order to optimize combustion chamber shapes in the development stage of mass production S.I. engine. To the purpose, the authors applied the flame image capturing system to single cylinder optical engine. The captured flame images were effectively analyzed by using the image processing program which was developed by the authors and adopted new threshold algorithm instead of conventional histogram analysis. In addition, the cylinder pressure was also measured simultaneously to compare evaluated flame results with cylinder pressure data in terms of the combustion characteristics, combustion stability, and cycle-to-cycle combustion variability.

Controlled auto ignition (CAI) combustion, also known as HCCI (homogeneous charge compression ignition), offers the potential to simultaneously improve fuel economy and reduce emission. CAI-combustion was achieved in a single cylinder gasoline DI engine, with a cylinder running in a CAI mode. Standard components were used the camshafts which had been modified in order to restrict the gas exchange process. The effects of air-fuel ratio, residual EGR rate and injection timing such as early injection and late injection on the attainable CAI combustion region were investigated. The effect that injection timings on factor such as start of combustion, combustion duration and heat release rate was also investigated. From results early injection caused the mixture to ignite earlier and burn more quickly due to the exothermic reaction during the recompression and gave rise to good mixing of the fuel-air.

A numerical heat transfer analysis and the structural analysis were performed for the design of sub-scale combustion chamber's coolant passage. The heat flux through the combustion chamber wall was estimated by 2-D heat transfer analysis of compressible hot gas and the result was applied as a thermal boundary condition of 3-D analysis. The heat flux estimated by the present method agreed well with the experimental correlation and proved to be insensitive to cooling condition. So the same thermal boundary condition was applied for various operating conditions. The maximum temperature of combustion chamber wall was predicted by 3-D analysis for single coolant passage and the result will be used for the development of a regeneratively cooled combustion chamber. Also estimated were the stress distribution and structural safety of coolant passage through the static structural analysis.

This study aims to provide basic design data for a pintle injector and its combustion device through case study on the research and development of combustion devices to which a liquid-liquid pintle injector was applied. From data analysis, it was possible to provide the initial dimension of the combustion chamber and pintle injector based on the engine thrust, and the geometric characteristics of the high-efficiency injector. In addition, the pintle tip heat damage prevention mechanism and materials, face-shutoff pintle injector implementation method, and central propellant selection criteria were summarized. Theses results will be used as basic data for the design criteria of an initial pintle injector combustion device.

Modelling the energy release performance of energetic material combustion in closed systems is of fundamental importance for aerospace and defense application. In particular, to compensate for the disadvantage of the combustion of single energetic material and maximize the benefits, a method of combusting the mixed energetic materials is used. However, since complicated heat transfer occurs when the energetic material is combusted, it is difficult to theoretically predict the combustion performance. Here, we suggest a theoretical model to estimate the energy release performance of mixed energetic material based on the model for the combustion performance of single energetic material. To confirm the effect of parameters on the model, and to gain insights into the combustion characteristics of the energetic material, we studied parameter analysis on the reaction temperature and the characteristic time scales of energy generation and loss. To validate the model, model predictions for mixed energetic materials are compared to experimental results depending on the amount and type of energetic material. The comparison showed little difference in maximum pressure and the reliability of the model was validated. Finally, we hope that the suggested model can predict the energy release performance of single or mixed energetic material for various types of materials, as well as the energetic materials used for validation.
In the combustion of the pulverized coal compared with that of liquid fuel or gaseous fuel, serious pollutants such as ash, $NO_x$ and $SO_x$ are released to surroundings. The objective of this study is the reduction of such pollutants in the combustion process. The modeling of cyclone combustor which uses the method of two stage combustion was carried out. The main burner length, scattering angle and air/fuel ratio were considered as parameters. The results show that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the amounts of coals which exit the combustor directly are, but the scattered input of coal is required anyway in order to collect all ashes. It is recommended that the shorter the main burner length is, the less the scattering angle is. And in the case of the scattered input compared with no scattering, the temperature in the combustor is more uniform and the amount of volatile is more reduced.
This paper proposes a numerical modeling approach to simulate the hybrid combustion phenomena. From the physical understandings of hybrid combustion, the computational domain was separated into three regions: the solid fuel, gas phase reactive flow, and the interface between solid and fluid. Moreover, for the accurate calculation, computational grids for these regions was generated at every time step considering the instantaneous moving interface which are governed by the balance equations using thermal pyrolysis. In the domain of reactive flow, by virtue of diffusion flame structure, turbulent combustion modeling was introduced using either mixture fraction approach or mean reaction rate approach.

An analytical study has been peformed to investigate the unsteady ignition characteristics of pulse combustion. In many combustion applications, strain rate of the flow can significantly affect the combustion features; ignition, extinction, and reignition. In the pulse combustion, two jets (hot combustion gases and fresh mixtures) coming from the opposite side of the combustor will collide in the combustor forming a stagnation region where the chemical reaction is suppressed by the strain rate until this becomes below the critical value. In this research, the method of large activation energy asymptotic is adopted with one step irreversible kinetics to examine the ignition response to the periodic variation of the strain rate of flow. The results show the variation of the maximum value of strain rate can determine whether the ignition or extinction occur.
