  • In this study, we looked into the method to establish fire growth rate by buildings use for growing fire at the beginning of a fire considering the characteristics of the combustibles in a performance-based design. Actual conditions survey and literature review were carried out for the fire load and exposed surface area of combustibles to establish design fire by domestic building use. As a results, a simplified prediction equation of fire growth rate which depends on fire load and weight of combustibles could be derived by calculating the relation between the fire load and the fire growth rate of an initial fire through investigation of combustibles by domestic building use. Also, as a result of analyzing the placement of combustibles and location of the ignition source, it was found that the influence of the materials of the combustibles and the materials of the combustibles adjacent to the ignition source is big. Though 4 different experiments were carried out for the evaluation, the result of comparing the findings with those of FGR model showed that the fire growth rate was similarly derived.

  • Heat release rates of main combustibles in residence area were measured by a calorimeter using oxygen consumption method. It was found that the peak heat release rates of the combustibles were 1.0MW for a refrigerator, 0.8MW for a desk, 4.2MW for a wardrobe and 0.4MW for a bed. Especially, the refrigerator and wardrobe were found to be very hazardous because of their fast fire growth rate.

  • In this study, combustibles investigation and fire growth rate experiment were performed for predicting initial fire behavior in buildings. Combustibles investigation was performed for residential buildings, which is most frequently affected by fire in Korea. Spatial characteristics and combustibles properties were separately investigated, and occupied area and layout characteristics of combustibles were identified to produce general layout models. Of the layout models, room was selected for fire test of a single compartment. From this test, fire propagation for each combustible was identified, which was delayed compared to the summed heat release rate of a single combustible.

  • The design fire based on the heat release rate (HRR) of combustibles can significantly affect the assessment of fire safety in the performance-based design (PBD). In the present PBD, however, limited information in the foreign literature has been used without further verification due to the lack of fire information in domestic combustibles. The objective of this study is to provide information on the HRR and fire growth rate for various combustibles in residential and office spaces. To end this, the fire experiments were carried out with single and multiple combustibles. The peak HRR of combustibles used in the present study had a range of 36 kW~1,092 kW. The fire growth rates were also $0.003kW/s^2{\sim}0.0287kW/s^2$ and $0.003kW/s^2{\sim}0.0838kW/s^2$ for the residential and office spaces, respectively. In particular, a sofa had the highest fire risk in terms of the peak HRR and fire growth rate. Finally, a methodology for calculating the peak HRR in a space was proposed through correlation analysis between the peak HRR and exposed surface of various combustibles.

  • With rapid growths of economy and technology, structures and forms of buildings have been diversified and complicated. Buildings also have become higher and larger than ever before. As a result, more people use a building and more combustibles exist in the building. Without understanding of combustion characteristics and the establishment of a fire safety plan in case of a residential fire, it is expected great loss of lives and properties. In this study, experiments were carried out to promote an understanding of the combustion characteristics of combustibles in the building. Sofa and bed were used as combustibles in the experiment. Heat release rate of the sofa was about 1.9MW. Heat release rate of the bed was approximately 650kW.

  • As a preliminary study to evaluate the reliability of the calculation method of fire load for residential furniture combustibles, the present study estimates the fire load considering the volume data obtained by the 3D geometrical information of combustibles and material properties based on the literature survey and sample burning test. A kitchen sink cabinet, couch and workstation were investigated for estimating its fire load and real fire test have been performed to measure total energy released from the combustibles. Based on total energy measured from real fire test, the relative error of the estimated fire load due to literature survey and measured material properties showed 6~120% and less than 20%, respectively. It shows that the estimation error of fire load are greatly affected by its material properties as well as geometrical information of combustibles and the present study will be able to contribute to accurate estimation of fire load.

  • In performance-based on fire safety design of buildings, design fires are assumed to be relatively coarse information on potential combustible objects described by its name, weight, size and main constituent materials. As early as 1970s, researchers from Japan has employed various methods of research regarding combustibles investigations. In result, researchers came up with one method that is being presently used. Therefore, our country basis in collection of data for combustibles yielded average measure, receipt rate of furniture usage and execution of combustible investigations to occupancy zone of university respondents. We have found out problem about excessive usage of multi-outlet extensions through research.

  • In this study, we considered the fire risk assessment of the temple using fire loads and the classification of combustibles. The building construction materials were classified as walls, beam-columns, floorings, ceiling panels and the loading combustibles were classified into fixed materials and movable materials. As a result, we confirmed that the total fire load of the Palsangjeon was $368\;kg/m^2$. The building construction materials accounted for approximately 93.8 percent of the total fire load and the loading combustibles accounted for approximately 6.2 percent.

  • In this study, the fire patterns, heat emissions, and smoke generated by means of fire tests developed for representative combustibles in residential facilities were analyzed from among seven fire types. These combustibles were selected in a previous study to simulate real-world situations and professionalism required while dealing with these types of fires and develop the field commander training content. Consequently, the maximum heat dissipation was recorded as 728.6 kW, followed by the dissipation measured from the combination of a mattress and electric blanket, desk and chair, and TV and mattress. The total heat emission of sofas (226.2 MJ) and the combination of mattress and electric blanket (2,259.5 ㎡) was recorded. In this study, the scope of the tests was limited to the fire characteristics and characteristics of the combustibles, and it is expected that a simulation using various data acquisition methods and FDS would be performed and evaluated at a later stage.
