  • Bonus-Malus system in automobile insurance rewards claim-free policyholders by premium discounts and penalizes policyholders with claims by premium surcharges. The purpose of adopting bonus-malus system is to alleviate differences in risk propensity. A well-known side-effect of bonus-malus system is the tendency of policyholders to pay small claims themselves and not report them to their, in order to avoid future premium increases. This phenomenon is called hunger for bonus. In this paper, we introduces an alternative approach to the Bonus-Malus system in automobile insurance - the approach is based on a deductible theory; and then search for a proper way combining both of them. Also, we construct a new algorithm to determine the optimal strategy of the policyholder based on the proposed model.

  • This study investigates reducing characteristics for the spreading of dredged soil and the diffusion of contaminant by silt protector curtain through three dimensional numerical experiment. The numerical medel is modified by combining the sediment transport characteristics for cohesive sediment into the previously developed model. Several numerical experiments have been given in order to investigate the reducing effect of silt protector using two dimensional numerical channel model under various parameters such as upstream flow velocity, depth of silt curtain and the position of dumped materials. Through the evaluation of several simulation results, we knew that the careful design has to be given in the determination of depth and position of silt protector.

  • The master/slave-combined system has a simplified and miniaturized structure formed by combining the master and slave that are the teleoperation system. In a certain situation, the operator may want to feel the magnified/reduced admittance of the real environments. Or he may want to feel the specific predefined admittance of the virtual environments. This paper presents a force feedback control structure for the master/slave-combined system. Through the proposed control structure, the operator can feel the predefined admittance of the virtual environments in case of free motion, and the magnified/reduced admittance of real environments in case of contact situation. It is discussed how the elements of the admittance effect ...

  • The use of ionizing radiation (IR) is essential for treating many human cancers. However, radioresistance markedly impairs the efficacy of tumor radiotherapy. IR enhances the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a variety of cells which are determinant components in the induction of apoptosis. Much interest has developed to augment the effect of radiation in tumors by combining it with radiosensitizers to improve the therapeutic ratio. In the current study, the radiosensitizing effects of resveratrol and piperine on cancer cells were evaluated. Cancer cell lines treated with these natural products exhibited significantly augmented IR-induced apoptosis and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, presumably through enhanced ROS generation. Applying natural products as sensitizers for IR-induced apoptotic cell death offers a promising therapeutic approach to treat cancer.

  • In this work, the electrophoretic motion of dsDNA molecule represented by a polymer through an artificial nano-pore in a membrane is simulated using the numerical method combining the lattice Boltzmann and Langevin molecular dynamic method. The polymer motion is represented by Langevin molecular dynamics technique while the fluid flow is taken into account by fluctuating lattice-Boltzmann method. The hydrodynamic interactions between the polymer and solvent in a confined space with a membrane having a hole are considered explicitly through the frictional and the random forces. The electric field intensity over the space is obtained from a finite difference method. Initially, the polymer is placed at one side of the space, and an electric field is applied to drive the polymer to the other side of the space through the nano-pore. In future, we plan to study the effect of the polymer size and the electric field on the electrophoretic velocity.

  • Door effort was calculated for a new door checker with torsion bar spring and integrated checker case by FE analysis. A hybrid checker arm which has peaks and valleys only on the upper surface was adopted to reduce noise in operation and make operation with more distinctive steps. The checker arm was modeled using shell elements to estimate both the longitudinal and the lateral resistance force by checker arm. By combining the checker arm resistance force obtained from analysis and the door self-closing force by the theoretical calculation, door effort was predicted to show the good correlation with test results. In addition the unrolling effect of roller model was investigated and a new roller type for more smooth rolling was studied.

  • In this paper a four-node hybrid stress element is proposed for analysing arbitrarily shaped plates on a two parameter elastic foundation. The element is developed by combining a hybrid plate stress element and a soil element. The formulation is based on Hellinger-Reissner variational principle in which both inter element compatible boundary displacement and equilibrated stress fields for the plate as well as the foundation are chosen separately. This formulation also allows a low order polynomial interpolation functions. Numerical examples are presented to show that the validity and efficiency of the present element for the plate analysis resting on an elastic foundation. In these examples the effect of soil depth, interaction between closed plates on soil parameters, comparison with Winkler hypothesis is investigated.

  • In this paper, eco-friendly paper strain gauge was fabricated in the way of printing strain gauge on paper substrate, using PEDOT:PSS ink and inkjet printer technology. As a p-type conductive high polymer, PEDOT:PSS is known to be piezoresistive effect. I formed a strain gauge by connecting in parallel 5 lines of $60{\mu}m$ width printed with PEDOT:PSS. To minimize surrounding influence such as temperature, I formed wheat-stone bridge by combining 4 strain gauges (quarter-bridge strain gauge) which were made up of PEDOT:PSS 5 lines and measured. In quarter-bridge strain gauge, only two strain gauges, facing each other, arranged in strain and horizontal direction were deformed while the other two strain gauge of vertical direction were not. Therefore, quarter-bridge strain gauge showed the output of half bridge. The fabricated quarter-bridge strain gauge had output sensitivity of $105.6{\mu}V/V{\cdot}mm$ and its output linearity was relatively good.
