  • In this paper, a new framework that works the automatic execution with less design cycle time and human intervention bottlenecks is introduced to optimize the vortex shedder design by numerical integration method. This framework is based on iSIGHT combined with the pre-processor GAMBIT, and flow analysis software FLUENT. Two vortex shedders, circular with slit and triangular- semi circular cylinder, are employed as the designed models to be optimized, and DOE driver is used for optimization. According to the essential properties of a vortex shedder, it has found that the best diameters are 30mm for circular cylinder with slit and 30 to 35 mm for tri-semi cylinder. For slit ratio, 0.1 and 0.15 are the optimized values for circular with slit and tri-semi cylinder respectively. And it is found that these optimal results generated by DOE automated design cycle are in well agreement with the experiment.

  • This paper outlines a computational procedure for the effective merging of diverse sensor measurements, displacement and acceleration signals in particular, in order to successfully monitor and simulate the current health condition of civil structures under dynamic loadings. In particular, it investigates a Kalman Filter implementation for the Heterogeneous Data Fusion of displacement and acceleration response signals of a structural system toward dynamic identification purposes. The procedure is perspectively aimed at enhancing extensive remote displacement measurements (commonly affected by high noise), by possibly integrating them with a few standard acceleration measurements (considered instead as noise-free or corrupted by slight noise only). Within the data fusion analysis, a Kalman Filter algorithm is implemented and its effectiveness in improving noise-corrupted displacement measurements is investigated. The performance of the filter is assessed based on the RMS error between the original (noise-free, numerically-determined) displacement signal and the Kalman Filter displacement estimate, and on the structural modal parameters (natural frequencies) that can be extracted from displacement signals, refined through the combined use of displacement and acceleration recordings, through inverse analysis algorithms for output-only modal dynamics identification, based on displacements.

  • This paper presents a new and efficient approach for solving the economic dispatch (ED) problems with nonconvex cost functions using particle swarm optimization (PSO). Although the PSO is easy to implement and has been empirically shown to perform well on many optimization problems, it may easily get trapped in a local optimum when solving problems with multiple local optima and heavily constrained. This paper proposes an improved PSO, which combines the conventional PSO with chaotic sequences (CPSO). The chaotic sequences combined with the linearly decreasing inertia weights in PSO are devised to improve the global searching capability and escaping from local minimum. To verify the feasibility of the proposed method, numerical studies have been performed for two different nonconvex ED test systems and its results are compared with those of previous works. The proposed CPSO algorithm outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms in solving ED problems, which consider valve-point and multi-fuels with valve-point effects.

  • A computer program for computing the edge response function(ERF) from the optical transfer function( 0TF) was developed. The ERFs of un-aberrated optical system and aberrated optical system were studied by the use of that program. We calculated the ERFs of the optical systems with a single aberration and with a combined aberration. In sagittal case, the ERE of the optical system with defocus or spherical aberration was worse than that with coma. In tagential case, the ERF of the optical system with coma was worse than that with defocusing or spherical aberraion. Both the shape and the position of ERF were varied with coma, but only the position of ERF was varied with distortion, in tangential case.

  • The principal trends in the course of emission control legislation are reviewed in this paper. In order to keep such a regulation, moreover, an inquiry ito the concrete technical possibility is conducted through review articles, Also, the composition of exhaust gases emitted from a marine diesel engine are investigated as several samples and the measures that can satisfy the value of regulation are handled with laying stress on the control methods discussed to date. It was concluded that various combined systems can be made to reduce NOx emissions without deteriorating substantially navigation costs since many technologies for reducing NOx emissions are being developed. All heat engines suffer from SOx emissions. There are two methods for reducing SOx emissions: desulfurization from exhaust gas and removal of sulfur composition from fuel oil. However it is necessary to watch the development of these technologies to evaluate which method is more favorable. Heat engines have a big problem in the regulation of environmental pollution from exhaust emissions. In the near future, however, diesel engines may be superior to other heat engines, owing to the high thermal efficiency, although the sales of individual models in dises engines may be prosperous and declining.

  • We present a new galaxy classification scheme in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) [$3.4{\mu}m$]-[$12{\mu}m$] color versus $12{\mu}m$ luminosity diagram. In this diagram, galaxies can be classified into three groups in different evolutionary stages. Late-type galaxies are distributed linearly along "MIR star-forming sequence" identified by Hwang et al. (2012). Some early-type galaxies show another sequence at [3.4]-[12] $(AB){\simeq}-2.0$, and we call this 'MIR blue sequence'. They are quiescent systems with old stellar population older than 10 Gyr. Between the MIR star-forming sequence and the MIR blue sequence, some early- and late-type galaxies are sparsely distributed, and we call these galaxies 'MIR green cloud galaxies'. Interestingly, both MIR blue sequence galaxies and MIR green cloud ones lie on the red sequence in the optical color-magnitude diagram. However, MIR green cloud galaxies have lower stellar masses and younger stellar populations (smaller $D_n4000$) than MIR blue sequence galaxies, suggesting that MIR green cloud galaxies are in the transition stage from MIR star-forming sequence galaxies to MIR blue sequence ones. We present differences in various galaxy properties between the three MIR classes using a multi-wavelength data, combined with the WISE and Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 10, of local (0.03 < z < 0.07) galaxies.

  • This paper describes the synthesis method for an adaptive SLB channel, which is robust to interference in the ULA radar system. The SLB channel based on the spatial DLC can be synthesized simply and is effective in blanking the signal coming from the sidelobe. We combined it with adaptive beamforming, which removes the strong interference using its correlation matrix. The adaptive SLB channel would suppress the interference below the noise, so it has good performance in an interference environment. This research will be applicable to planar array systems.

  • Research on how to use the biological characteristics of human to confirm the identity of the individual is being actively conducted. Electrocardiogram(: ECG) based biometric system is difficult to counterfeit and does not cause skin irritation on the subject. It can be easily combined with conventional biometrics such as fingerprint and face recognition to give multimodal biometric systems. In this thesis, biometric identification method analysing ECG waveform characteristics from Discrete Wavelet Transform(DWT) coefficients is suggested. Feature selection is performed on the 9 coefficients of DWT using the correlation analysis. The verification is achieved by using the error back propagation neural networks. Using the proposed approach on 24 subjects of MIT-BIH QT Database, 98.88% verification rate has been obtained.

  • Dried samples of Ligustrum japonicum were extracted twice: with methylene chloride and with methanol (MeOH), respectively. The combined crude extracts were successively fractionated into n-hexane, 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq.MeOH), n-butanol (n-BuOH), and water fractions by liquid-liquid partition. Antioxidant activities of crude extract and its solvent fractions were evaluated by measuring authentic $ONOO^-$, and $ONOO^-$ generated from 3-morpholinsydnonimine (SIN-1) as well as degree of occurrence of intracellular ROS in HT 1080 cells, and genomic DNA oxidation. The 85% aq.MeOH and n-BuOH fractions exhibited the good antioxidant activity. Further purification of the 85% aq.MeOH fracition led to the isolation of Oleanolic acid (1), Maslinic acid (2), and Ursolic acid (3). All compounds showed the significant antioxidant effects in all assay systems.

  • In general, the braking system of a high speed train has an important role for the safety of the train. To stop safely the train at its pre-decided position, it is necessary to properly combine the various brakes. The train has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical (friction) braking systems. In order to design a good brake system, it is essential for designers to predict the brake performance. In this paper, the braking performance analysis program has been developed and verified by comparing the simulation results with the brake test results of HSR-350x; both results match very well. Also, the brake performances of high speed trains can be predicted by using this program under various conditions.
