  • Strong restrictions on emissions from marine power plants (particularly $SO_x$, $NO_x$) will probably be adopted in the near future. In this paper, a combined solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and gas turbine fuelled by natural gas is proposed as an attractive option to limit the environmental impact of the marine sector. It includes a study of a heat-recovery system for 18 MW SOFC fuelled by natural gas, to provide the electric power demand onboard commercial vessels. Feasible heat-recovery systems are investigated, taking into account different operating conditions of the combined system. Two types of SOFC are considered, tubular and planar SOFCs, operated with either natural gas or hydrogen fuels. This paper includes a detailed thermodynamic analysis for the combined system. Mass and energy balances are performed, not only for the whole plant but also for each individual component, in order to evaluate the thermal efficiency of the combined cycle. In addition, the effect of using natural gas as a fuel on the fuel cell voltage and performance is investigated. It is found that a high overall efficiency approaching 70% may be achieved with an optimum configuration using SOFC system under pressure. The hybrid system would also reduce emissions, fuel consumption, and improve the total system efficiency.

  • This study evaluated the risk of single and combined exposure to microplastics in zebrafish (Danio rerio) through biomarkers, such as survival rate, excretion rate, and histological alterations of organ systems. The experimental groups were the control(Cont.), single microplastics exposure group(MPs, 1.83%/fish total weight(g)), the copper group(Cu, 21.6 ㎍ L-1), and a group with combined exposure to MPs and copper (MPs*Cu). The experiment was conducted with individual exposure (7 days) for MP excretion rate analysis and group exposure (14 days) for biomarker analysis. The daily excretion rate of MPs tended to decrease in a time-dependent manner. The copper concentration in the body was not significantly different between single and combined copper exposure. The degeneration of mucous cells in the skin, capillary dilation of the gill lamella, increased intestinal mucous, hepatocyte hypertrophy, and the degeneration of glomeruli and renal tubules were observed in all exposure groups. These histological alterations showed the highest tendency in the MPs*Cu group. In this study, the changes in biomarkers were attributed to the single effect of copper or the combined effect of copper and MPs rather than being solely influenced by MPs.

  • Combined models, specified by two or more modeling formalisms, can represent a wide variety of complex systems. This paper describes a methodology for the development of combined models in two model types of discrete event and continuous process. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can combine model of the DES and the CS within a framework. The structure employs the DEVS formalism for the DES models and differential or polynomial equations for the CS models. To employ the proposed structure to specify a DEVS/CS combined model, a modeler needs to take the following steps. First, a modeler should identify events in the CS and transform the states of the CS into the DES. Second, a modular employs the formalism to specify the system as the DES. Finally, a moduler developes sub-models for the CS and continguos states of the DES and establishs one-to-one correspondence between the sub-models and such states. The proposed formal structre has been applied to develop a DEVS/CS combined model for the human cardiovascular system. For this, the cardiac cycle is partitioned into a set of phases based on events identified through observation. For each phase, a CS model has been developed and associated with the phase. To validate the DEVS/CS combined model developed, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM + + environment, which is a model simulation results with the results obtained from the CS model simulation using SPICE. The comparison shows that the DEVS/CS combined model adequately represents dynamics of the human heart system at each phase of cardiac cycle.

  • In this paper, we investigate the main components of stray load loss of induction motors for ammonia compressors. The variations of the losses at each part of the motor due to load are calculated by the combined 3-D-2D finite element method formulated by the mixed moving coordinate systems. The stray load loss is calculated from these results due the definition of IEEE standard-112. It is clarified that the core loss and the eddy current loss of the can increase due to load, which can be considered as the main part of the stray load loss.

  • The goal of this paper is to determine the eigenvalues of a uniform rectangular plate carrying any number of spring-damper-mass systems using an analytical-and-numerical-combined method (ANCM). To this end, a technique was presented to replace each "spring-damper-mass" system by a massless equivalent "spring-damper" system with the specified effective spring constant and effective damping coefficient. Then, the mode superposition approach was used to transform the partial differential equation of motion into the matrix equation, and the eigenvalues of the complete system were determined from the associated characteristic equation. To verify the reliability of the presented theory, all numerical results obtained from the ANCM were compared with those obtained from the conventional finite element method (FEM) and good agreement was achieved. Since the order of the property matrices for the equation of motion obtained from the ANCM is much lower than that obtained from the FEM, the CPU time required by the ANCM is much less than that by the FEM.

  • The development of the solar and the wind power energy is necessary since the future alternative energies should have no pollution and no limitation. currently power generation system of MW scale has been developed, but it still has a few faults that its operation depends on with the weather condition. In order to solve these existing problems. combined generation system of photovoltaic(400W) and wind power generation system(400W) was suggested. It combines wind power and solar energy to have the supporting effect from each other. However. since the combined generation system cannot always generate stable output with ever-changing weather condition, power compensation device that uses elastic energy of spiral spring was added. In an experiment. when output of system gets lower than 12V(charging voltage), additional power was from the stored rotational energy of spiral spring.

  • In this paper, we propose another paradigm(QNBP) to be capable of overcoming Limitations of the traditional backpropagation(SDBP). QNBPis based on the method of Quasi -Newton(variable metric) with the nomalized direction vectors and computes step size through the linear search. Simulation results showed that QNBP was definitely superior to both the stochasitc SDBP and the deterministic SDBP in terms of accuracy and rate of convergence and might sumount the problem of local minima. and there was no different between DFP+SR1 and BFGS+SR1 combined algrothms in QNBP.

  • A numerical procedure is described for predicting the dynamic responses of combined systems of floating breakwaters and huge offshore structures supported by a large numer of the floating bodies in waves. The hydrodynamic interactins among tatal floating bodies are taken into account in their exact form within the context of linear potential theory. Wave control effects are discussed with both hydrodynamic interactions and hydrodynamic-structure interaction effects. The method presented is applicalbe to combined systems of floating breakwaters and huge structures for ocean space utilization for which a number of practical uses are seen in the future.
