  • The theoretical method is developed to Investigate the nitration characteristics of the combined cylindrical shells with an annular plate joined to the shell at any arbitrary axial position. The structural coupling between shell and plate is simulated using two types of artificial springs a translational spring is introduced for translational coupling and a rotational spring is used for rotational coupling. The springs are continuously distributed along circumferential direction. Using the Rayleigh-Ritz method the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the combined shell with an annular plate examine. The effect of Inner-to-outer radius ratio, axial position of annular plate and length-to-radius ratio of shell on vibration characteristics of combined cylindrical shells is studied. The theoretical results are verified by comparison with FEM results.

  • In a multivariate normal production process Np(µ,Σ), a chart combining three EWMA charts with accumulate-combine method for µ, variance components of Σ, and off-diagonal elements of Σ, into a EWMA (exponentially weighted moving average) chart is considered, which is called a combined EWMA chart. Through simulation work, the proposed combined EWMA chart's numerical performance and properties are examined. The simulation results show that the proposed combined EWMA chart, which is simultaneously monitoring all the process parameters of multivariate normal production process, works effectively in the perspective of means, variances and correlation coefficients. In addition, the combined EWMA chart is extended to VSI chart.

  • This paper deals with numerical efficiency of nonlinear solution technique for space trusses. It will propose the combined Arc-length method to trace structural behavior after reaching buckling load as opposed to the current Arch-length method. The combined Arc-length method uses the current stiffness parameter as a control variable. It uses Secant-Newton method in stable path and applies Arc-length method in unstable path. To evaluate efficiency of solution technique, the accuracy of solution, convergence, and computing time concerning illustrative numerical examples are compared with the current Arc-length method. It show that the combined Arc-length method, as proposed in this paper, is superior to the current Arc-length method in numerical nonlinear analysis.

  • Recently authors have proposed a new method to estimate failure strength of a pipe with local wall thinning subject to either internal pressure or global bending. The proposed method was based on the equivalent stress averaged over the minimum ligament in the locally wall thinned region, and the simple scheme to estimate the equivalent stress in the minimum ligament was proposed, based on the reference stress concept. This paper extends the new method to combined internal pressure and global bending. The proposed method is validated against FE results for various geometries of local wall thinning under combined loading. The effect of internal pressure is also investigated in the present study. Comparison of maximum moments, predicted according to the proposed method, with published full-scale pipe test data fur locally wall-thinned pipes under combined internal pressure and global bending, shows good agreement.

  • Although the finite element method has become an indispensible tool for the dynamic analysis of structures, difficulty remains to quantify the errors associated with discretization. To improve the modeling accuracy, this paper proposes a method to make a combined use of finite elements and exact dynamic elements. Exact interpolation functions for the Timoshenko beam element are derived using the exact dynamic element modeling (EDEM) and compared with interpolation functions of the finite element method (FEM). The exact interpolation functions are tested with the Laplace variable varied. A combined use of finite element method and exact interpolation functions is presented to gain more accurate mode shape functions. This paper also presents a combined use of finite elements and exact dynamic elements in design/reanalysis problems. Timoshenko flames with tapered sections are tested to demonstrate the design procedure with the proposed method. The numerical study shows that the combined use of finite element model and exact dynamic element model is very useful.

  • A method, termed as the substructural sensitivity synthesis method, which utilizes the computational merits of the component mode synthesis technique is proposed to calculate design sensitivity of modal parameters of substructurally combined structures. In this method, the sensitivity analysis is combined with component mode synthesis thchnique. thus the degrees of freedom of a combined structure can be dramatically reduced. Free-interface mode method including the residual attachment modes among the component mode synthesis methods is used to calculate the modal sensitivity of the combined structure. For the design sensitivities of modal properties of structure, the Nelson's method, which is exact solving method is used. It is shown that the modal sensitivities of the entire structure can be obtained by synthesizing the substructural modal data, and the sensitivities of the modal data about the design variables of modifiable substructure. Using the proposed method, the final degrees of freedom of entire structure can be remarkably reduced to calculate the modal parameter sensitivities. With a structure composed of beams and plates, as an example, the sensitivities of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors obtained by this proposed method were compared with the exact solutions in terms of accuracy.

  • The vacuum preloading method has been used in many countries for soil improvement and land reclamation. However, the treatment time is long and the improvement effect is poor for the straight-line vacuum preloading method. To alleviate such problems, a novel combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method for shallow ground treatment is proposed in this study. Two types of traditional vacuum preloading and combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading tests were conducted and monitored in the field. In both tests, the depth of prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) is 4.5m, the distance between PVDs is 0.8m, and the vacuum preloading time is 60 days. The prominent difference between the two methods is when the preloading time is 45 days, the injection pressure of 250 kPa is adopted for combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading test to inject air into the ground. Based on the monitoring data, this paper systematically studied the mechanical parameters, hydraulic conductivity, pore water pressure, settlement and subsoil bearing capacity, as determined by the vane shear strength, to demonstrate that the air-pressurizing system can improve the consolidation. The consolidation time decreased by 15 days, the pore water pressure decreased to 60.49%, and the settlement and vane shear strengths increased by 45.31% and 6.29%, respectively, at the surface. These results demonstrate the validity of the combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method. Compared with the traditional vacuum preloading, the combined air booster and straight-line vacuum preloading method has better reinforcement effect. In addition, an estimation method for evaluating the average degree of consolidation and an empirical formula for evaluating the subsoil bearing capacity are proposed to assist in engineering decision making.

  • The objective of this paper is to analyze the combined productivity at container terminal. We present a mode3 for combined productivity that perform the container transportation between apron and yard. Usually, the efficiency of container terminal is evaluated by productivity of container cranes at apron, but there are other equipment such as transport vehicles and yard cranes. Therefore, a method that can estimate the combined productivity of equipment of container terminal is required. We performed various simulation experiment and analyzed combined productivity to estimate the required number of equipment.

  • Among various sensitivity evaluation techniques, semi-analytical method is quite popular since this method is more advantageous than analytical method and global finite difference method. However, SAM reveals severe inaccuracy problem when relatively large rigid body motions are identified for individual elements. Such errors result from the numerical differentiation of the pseudo load vector calculated by the finite difference scheme. In the present study, the adjoint variable method combined with complex variable is proposed to obtain the shape and size sensitivity for structural optimization. The complex variable can present accurate results regardless of the perturbation size as well as easy to be implemented. Through a few numerical examples of the static problem for the structural sensitivity, the efficiency and reliability of the adjoint variable method combined with complex variable is demonstrated.

  • Among several non-destructive testing methods, ultrasonic pulse velocity method and rebound index method have been widely used for the evaluation of concrete strength. However, such methods might not provide accurate estimated results since factors influencing the relationship between strength and either ultrasonic pulse velocity or rebound index are not considered. In this paper, the evaluation method of concrete strength using rod-wave velocity measured by impact-resonance method is proposed. A basic equation is obtained by the linear regression of velocity vs, strength data at specific age and then, aging factor is employed in the equation to consider the difference of the increasing rate between wave velocity and strength. Strengths predicted by the proposed equation agree well with test results. Furthermore, the combined method of rod-wave velocity and rebound index is proposed.
