Truss structures are widely used in many space structures, such as large antenna systems, space stations, precision segmented telescopes because they are light in weight and amenable in assembly or deployment. But, due to the low damping capacity, they remain excited for a long time once disturbed. These structural vibrations can reduce life of the structures and cause unstable dynamic characteristics. In this research, vibration suppression experiment has carried out with a three-dimensional 15-member truss structure using two piezoelectric actuators. Piezoelectric actuators which consist of stacks of thin piezoelectric material disks are directly inserted to the truss structure collocated with the strain sensors. Each actuator is controlled digitally in decentralized manner, based on local integral and proportional feedback. The optimal positions of the actuators are determined by the modal damping ratio and the control force. Numerical simulation has carried out to determine optimal position of each actuator.
This paper reports a filtered velocity feedback(FVF) controller, which is an alternative to direct velocity feedback(DVFB) controller. The instability problems at high frequencies due to non-collocated sensor/actuator configuration with the DVFB can be alleviated by the proposed FVF controller. The FVF controller is designed to filter out the unstable high frequency response. The dynamics of a clamped plate under forces and moments and the FVF controllers are formulated. The stability of the control system and performance are investigated with the open loop transfer function(OLTF). It is found that the FVF controller has a higher gain margin than the corresponding DVFB controller owing to the rapid roll-off behavior at high frequencies. Although the gain margin cannot be fully utilized because of the enhancement at the high frequencies, the vibration at the modes lower than the tuning frequency is well controlled. This performance of the FVF controller is shown to be improved from that of the DVFB controller. It is, however, noted that the stability around the tuning frequency is very sensitive so that the enhancement in vibration level should be followed. The reduction performance at low frequencies using the FVF controller should be compromised with the enhancement in the vibration at high frequencies while designing the controller.
This paper presents and compares three feedback control strategies for active control of noise inside a 3-D vibro-acoustic cavity. These are a) control strategy based on direct output feedback (DOFB) b) control strategy based on linear quadratic regulator (LQR) to reduce structural vibrations and c) LQR control strategy with a weighting scheme based on structural-acoustic coupling coefficients. The first two strategies are indirect control strategies in which noise reduction is achieved through active vibration control (AVC), termed as AVC-DOFB and AVC-LQR respectively. The third direct strategy is based on active structural-acoustic control (ASAC). This strategy is an LQR based optimal control strategy in which the coupling between the various structural and the acoustic modes is used to design the controller. The strategy is termed as ASAC-LQR. A numerical model of a 3-D rectangular box cavity with a flexible plate (glued with piezoelectric patches) and with other five surfaces treated rigid is developed using finite element (FE) method. A single pair of collocated piezoelectric patches is used for sensing the vibrations and applying control forces on the structure. A comparison of frequency response function (FRF) of structural nodal acceleration, acoustic nodal pressure, and piezoelectric actuation voltage is carried out. It is found that the AVC-DOFB control strategy gives equal importance to all the modes. The AVC-LQR control strategy tries to consume the control effort to damp all the structural modes. It is seen that the ASAC-LQR control strategy utilizes the control effort more intelligently by adding higher damping to those structural modes that matter more for reducing the interior noise.
Recent advanced technologies enable multiple users to share the virtual environment and work together as they are collocated. Additional sensory information such as haptic could improve the cooperation. In this paper, we propose a server-client architecture with multi-rate haptic control to support a tangible cooperation. Using our approach, the system is able to maintain a consistent simulation state across multiple users as well as to provide a highfidelity stable haptic interaction. To verify our approach, we have developed an experimental application and tested the cooperation among multiple users. The results confirm that our system is able to provide coherency among clients as well as haptic transparency.
A pressure-based, unstructured finite volume method has been applied to couple the chemical kinetics and fluid dynamics and to capture effectively and accurately the steep gradient flame field. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by two methodologies including the pressure-correction algorithm and the projection scheme. A stiff, operator-split projection scheme for the detailed nonequilibrium chemistry has been employed to treat the stiff reaction source terms. The conservative form of the governing equations are integrated over a cell-centered control volume with collocated storage for all transport variables. Computations using detailed chemistry and variable transport properties were performed for two laminar reacting flows: a counterflow hydrogen-air diffusion flame and a lifted methane-air triple flame. Numerical results favorably agree with measurements in terms of the detailed flame structure.
A novel concept of feedback loop design for modal test and model updating is proposed. This method uses the closed -loop natural frequency information for parameter modification to overcome the problems associated with the conventional method employing the modal sensitivity matrix. To obtain new modal information from closed-loop system, controllers should be effective in changing modal data while guaranteeing the stability of closed-loop system. It is very hard to guarantee the stability of the closed-loop system with non-collocated sensor and actuator set. Ill this research, we proposed a controller called mode-decoupling controller that can change a target mode as much as the designer wants guaranteeing the stability of closed-loop system. This controller can be computed just using measured open-loop modeshape matrix. A simulation based on time domain input/output data is performed to check the feasibility of proposed control method.

The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. The limitation of this control scheme is that the feedback signal does not account for additional dynamics of the tool post and the material removal process. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surfice. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface cnotours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated dapth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in additn to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamoneter. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admitance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.
Active window system which can reduce the environmental noises, such as traffic noise and construction noise, from an open window into a room was proposed in the previous works. The key idea of the proposed active window system was that the control sources are approximately collocated with the primary noise source in terms of the acoustic power for global noise reduction throughout the interior room. Moreover, because it is important not to intrude into the living space in the building environment, no error sensors were used and an open-loop control method using control sources at the window frame and the reference sensors outside the room was used for the proposed system. The open-loop control gain was calculated by the interior room model assumed as the semi-infinite space, and the interior sound field was estimated by Rayleigh integral equation under the baffled window model assumption. However, windows with a finite thickness should were considered for the calculation of the open-loop control gain of the active window system since these are representative of most window cases. Therefore, the finite thickness window model based on the Sgard's model was derived and the open-loop control gain using the interior sound field estimated by that model was calculated for active window system. To compare the performance of these two models, a scale-model experiment was performed in an anechoic chamber according to noise source directions. Experimental results showed that the performance for the thickness window model is better than the baffled window model as the angle with respect to the perpendicular direction is larger.
