Optimization of domes against instability

  • Static stability is a decisive factor in the design of domes. Stability-related external factors, such as load and supports, are incorporated into structural vulnerability theory by the definition of a relative rate of joint well-formedness ($r_r$). Hence, the instability mechanism of domes can be revealed. To improve stability, an optimization model against instability, which takes the maximization of the lowest $r_r$ ($r_{r,min}$) as the objective and the discrete member sections as the variables, is established with constraints on the design requirements and steel consumption. Optimizations are performed on two real-life Kiewitt-6 model domes with a span of 23.4 m and rise of 11.7 m, which are initially constructed for shaking table collapse test. Well-formedness analyses and stability calculation (via arc-length method) of the models throughout the optimization history demonstrate that this proposed method can effectively enhance $r_{r,min}$ and optimize the static stability of shell-like structures. Additionally, seismic performance of the optimum models subjected to the same earthquake as in the shaking table test is checked. The supplemental simulations prove that the optimum models are superior to the original models under earthquake load as well.

부식을 고려한 선각거더의 최종강도 신뢰성 (Ultimate Strength Based Reliability of Corroded Ship Hulls)

  • 노후선박은 부식, 피로균열 등의 구조손상을 입고 있으며, 구조손상이 심각하면 중대한 해난사고를 초래할 위험성이 높다. 선각붕괴에 의한 선박의 침몰사고를 미연에 방지하기 위하여는 구조손상에 기인된 각종 불확실성을 고려한 노후선박의 최종강도 신뢰성을 평가할 필요가 있다. 본 논문에서는 부식에 의한 선체구조부재의 판두께 감소효과를 고려하여 선체구조의 최종강도를 기준으로한 신뢰성 평가기법을 제시하였다. 이를 위해 선체구조의 부식 속도모델을 선급에서 제시하는 데이타를 바탕으로 설정하고, 부식효과를 고려한 신뢰성 한계상태방정식을 도출하였으며, 최종강도 신뢰성은 SORM (second-order reliability method)을 적용하여 계산하였다. 본 기법을 이중선체 유조선에 적용하여 선령의 증가에 따른 단면계수 및 최종강도 신뢰성의 감소특성을 고찰하였다.

버블 잉크젯에서의 기포성장 및 액적분사에 관한 수치적 연구 (Numerical Study on Bubble Growth and Droplet Ejection in a Bubble Inkjet Printer)

  • The droplet ejection process driven by an evaporating bubble in a thermal inkjet printhead is investigated by numerically solving the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy. The phase interfaces are tracked by a level set method which is modified to include the effect of phase change at the interface and extended for multiphase flows with irregular solid boundaries. The compressibility effect of a bubble is also included in the analysis to appropriately describe the bubble expansion behaviour associated with the high pressure caused by bubble nucleation. The whole process of bubble growth and collapse as well as droplet ejection during thermal inkjet printing is simulated without employing a simplified semi-empirical bubble growth model. Based on the numerical results, the jet breaking and droplet formation behaviour is observed to depend strongly on the bubble growth and collapse pattern. Also, the effects of liquid viscosity, surface tension and nozzle geometry are quantified from the calculated bubble growth rate and ink droplet ejection distance.

혈관부착 비골이식술을 이용한 거골 무혈성 괴사의 치료 (Treatment of Avascular Necrosis of the Talus with Vascularized Fibular Graft)

  • Nonunion and avascular necrosis are well-recognized complications of severe ankle injury especially aftrer talar neck fracture. The treatment of avascular necrosis is controversial and methods of treatment are limited. Many modalities have been introduced for the treatment of avascular necrosis of talus. The prolonged non-weight bearing for 2~3 years is not practical but also is occasionally complicated by late segmental collapse. Operative treatment includes tibiotalar arthrodesis and talectomy with tibiocalcaneal arthrodesis, but arthrodesis in patients with talar avascular necrosis is technically demanding and cause stiff, immobile foot and relatively high failure rate was reported. It is desirable to preserve their original joint if possible. Vascularized fibular grafting has been reported as a joint preserving treatment option for osteonecrosis of the hip but has not been described for the ankle. The authors applied free vascularized fibular grafts for 3 cases of avascular necrosis of talus. We observed evidences of revascularization of necrotic talar body and progression of fracture healing and obtained satisfactory results at mean 8 months of follow-up. Vascularized fibular grafting is one of the better alternatives for treating avascular necrosis of talus. It is expected that vascularized fibular grafting can prevent the necrotic talar dome from progressing to collapse and promote directly restored vascularization and new bone formation.

Element loss analysis of concentrically braced frames considering structural performance criteria

  • This research aims to investigate the structural behavior of concentrically braced frames after element loss by performing nonlinear static and dynamic analyses such as Time History Analysis (THA), Pushdown Analysis (PDA), Vertical Incremental Dynamic Analyses (VIDA) and Performance-Based Analysis (PBA). Such analyses are to assess the potential and capacity of this structural system for occurrence of progressive collapse. Besides, by determining the Failure Overload Factors (FOFs) and associated failure modes, it is possible to relate the results of various types of analysis in order to save the analysis time and effort. Analysis results showed that while VIDA and PBA according to FEMA 356 are mostly similar in detecting failure mode and FOFs, the Pushdown Overload Factors (PDOFs) differ from others at most to the rate of 23%. Furthermore, by sensitivity analysis it was observed that among the investigated structures, the eight-story frame had the most FOF. Finally, in this research the trend of FOF and the FOF to critical member capacity ratio for the plane split-X braced frames were introduced as a function of the number of frame stories.

Effect of surface bolt on the collapse mechanism of a shallow rectangular cavity

  • Based on the collapse characteristics of a shallow rectangular cavity, a three-dimensional failure mechanism which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof is constructed. Considering the effects of surcharge pressure and surface bolt on the collapsing block, the external rate of works produced by surcharge pressure and surface bolt are included in the energy dissipation calculation. Using variational approach, an analytic expression of surface equation for the collapsing block, which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof, is derived in the framework of upper bound theorem. Based on the analytic expression of surface equation, the shape of the collapsing block for shallow cavity is drawn. Moreover, the changing law of the collapsing region for different parameters indicates that the collapsing region of rock mass decreases with the increase of the density of surface bolt. This conclusion can provide reference for practicing geotechnical engineers to achieve an optimal design of supporting structure for a shallow cavity.

Seismic fragility assessment of steel moment-resisting frames equipped with superelastic viscous dampers

  • The superelastic viscous damper (SVD) is a hybrid passive control device comprising a viscoelastic damper and shape memory alloy (SMA) cables connected in series. The SVD is an innovative damper through which a large amount of seismic energy can dissipate. The current study assessed the seismic collapse induced by steel moment-resisting frames (SMRFs) equipped with SVDs and compared them with the performance of special MRFs and buckling restrained brace frames (BRBFs). For this purpose, nonlinear dynamic and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) were conducted in OpenSees software. Both 5- and 9-story special MRFs, BRBFs, and MRFs equipped with the SVDs were examined. The results indicated that the annual exceedance rate for maximum residual drifts of 0.2% and 0.5% for the BRBFs and MRFs with SVDs, respectively, were considerably less than for SMRFs with reduced-beam section (RBS) connections and that the seismic performances of these structures were enhanced with the use of the BRB and SVD. The probability of collapse due to residual drift in the SVD, BRB, and RBS frames in the 9-story structure was 1.45, 1.75, and 1.05 times greater than for the 5-story frame.

Fracture mechanics analysis of multipurpose canister for spent nuclear fuels under horizontal/oblique drop accidents

  • In this paper, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis is performed to determine the critical crack sizes of the multipurpose canister (MPC) manufactured using austenitic stainless steel under dynamic loading conditions that simulate drop accidents. Firstly, dynamic finite element (FE) analysis is performed using Abaqus v.2018 with the KORAD (Korea Radioactive Waste Agency)-21 model under two drop accident conditions. Through the FE analysis, critical locations and through-thickness stress distributions in the MPC are identified, where the maximum plastic strain occurs during impact loadings. Then, the evaluation using the failure assessment diagram (FAD) is performed by postulating an external surface crack at the critical location to determine the critical crack depth. It is found that, for the drop cases considered in this paper, the principal failure mechanism for the circumferential surface crack is found to be the plastic collapse due to dominant high bending axial stress in the thickness. For axial cracks, the plastic collapse is also the dominant failure mechanism due to high membrane hoop stress, followed by the ductile tearing analysis. When incorporating the strain rate effect on yield strength and fracture toughness, the critical crack depth increases from 10 to 20%.

운용조건 변화에 따른 추진제탱크 가압가스 요구량 예측 (Prediction of Pressurant Mass Requirement for Propellant Tank with Operating Condition Variation)

  • 추진제탱크 가압가스 요구량 예측을 위해 개발된 수치해석 모델을 사용하여 운용조건에 따른 가압가스 요구량 변화를 살펴보았다. 한국형발사체 1단 산화제탱크의 개념설계 결과를 기준 모델로 정하였고, 산화제탱크로 유입되는 가압가스의 온도, 산화제의 체적유량, 산화제탱크 길이 대 직경의 비를 운용 변수로 선정하였다. 가압가스 요구량 및 질량유량, collapse factor, 얼리지 온도분포를 예측하였고, 그 결과 가압가스의 온도가 가압가스 요구량에 가장 큰 영향을 미침을 확인하였다. 또한 얼리지에 대한 에너지 분석을 통하여 추진제탱크의 가압효율을 계산하였고, 유입된 가압가스 에너지 중 추진제탱크 벽면을 통한 열손실이 가장 큼을 확인하였다.

도로${\cdot}$철도 부문에 대한 SOC 투자분담율 전망에 관한 연구 (Prospects for the Budget Allocation of the Social Overhead Capita] in Korea - Focusing on the Investment between Highway and Railway sectors -)

  • Since the nation's currency crisis in 1997. Korea reioined the USD 10.000 per capita income group after collapse of per capita income to USD 6.000 due to the minus GDP growth and sharp hike of exchange rate. It has also been expected for Korea to achieve per capita income of USD 20.000. provided that it maintains $10\%$ export increase rate. $5\%$ nominal GDP growth rate. $3\%$ consumer price index. $2\%$ increase in KRW/USD exchange rate. and $1\%$ net population increase rate. Yet. it should be noted that the nation needs to fulfill the necessity of various SOC infrastructure investment in order to achieve this goal. This paper will address the prospects for the future direction of the national SOC policies through the historical examination of the industrialized nations. such as U.S.A.. U.K.. France. and Japan. with regard to the relationships between economic growth and SOC provision. Some efforts will be made to forecast the optimal budget allocation of the national SOC, in particular, between highway and railway sectors.
