  • There were few data for the distribution of the indicator organisms in the commercial plant foods, and for the normal flora and for the foodborne agents within the country. First of all it must be investigated the distribution of the indicator organisms. And also it is very important to prepare the sanitation criteria for the plant foods through the microbiological examination and the investigation of tendency to change of the indicator organisms according to the storage temperature and period. The average number of total viable counts for grains was 2.9$\times$105/g, psychrophilic bacteria 2.9$\times$105/g, heterotrophic bacteria 3.1$\times$105/g, heat-resistant bacteria 2.1$\times$103/g, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 23/g. That for beans was 6.3$\times$102/g, psychrophile 34/g, heterotroph 1.7$\times$102/g. That for sesames was 1.4$\times$105/g, coliform 350/g, psychrophile 7.4$\times$104/g, heterotroph 5.8$\times$104/g, Pseud. aeruginosa 2.3$\times$103/g. heat-resistant bacteria 150/g. • There has been considerable organisms the most indicative of the sanitary quality of food products. Of the suggested indices of sanitary quality of foods are coliform organism and SPC. In addition to the usual index organisms on fish products it is also necessary to determining the sanitary quality The authors have tested with 282 fish products (spring : 39, summer : 109, autumn : 112, winter . 22) 1. The range of microbial organism in fish products are as follows Spring : SPC is $13{\times}10^3\; to\; 50{\times}10^8/g$, coliform group is $16{\times}10^2\; to\; 48{\times}10^8/g$ and 2. coli is 50 to $22{\times}10^4/100g$. Summer : SPC is 70 to$64{\times}10^9/g$. coliform group is 25 to $26{\times}10^8/g$ and E. coli is 20 to $22{\times}10^4/100g$. Autumn : SPC is $10{\times}10^3\; to\; 46{\times}10^8/g$, coliform group is 200 to $20{\times}10^5/g$ and E. coli is 20 to $22{\times}10^4/100g$. Winter : SPC is $30{\times}10^3\; to\;30{\times}10^8/g$. coliform group is $21{\times}10^2\;to\;16{\times}10^3/g$ and E. coli is 20 to 790/100g. Salmonella and Staphylococcus species were not in 282 fish products.

  • The distribution of coliform population and drug-resistant coliforms in Shinchun water during April to August in 1976 and R factors in resistant strains were studied. The mean coliform population in the stream water was 361 organisms per 0.1ml and 53.5% of total coliforms were fecal coliforms. Thritynine and a half percent of total coliforms were streptomycin (SM) resistant to one or more of following antibiotics; tetracycline (TC), chloramphenicol (CM), ampicillin (AP) and kanamycin (KM). The most frequent resistant pattern was triple resistance to SM, TC and AP (23.8%) and followed by quadruple one to SM, TC, CM and AP (17.5%). About 87 percent strains carried R factors which were transferable by conjugation to E. coli ML 1410 or S. typhimurium LT 2.

  • Hygienic condition of farm waters has an effect on the hygiene of dairy foods. So we examined Standard Plate Count, coliform, E. coli, heat-resistant bacteria, psychrophilic bacteria, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enterococcus for the bacterial sanitation of 78 farm waters in Kyunggi Province. Of the 78 farm waters, the average number of psychrophilic bacteria was 750 $\pm$ 170/ml, SPC 440 $\pm$ 130/ml, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 130 $\pm$ 97/100/ml, Coliform 22 $\pm$ 17/ml, E. coli 10 $\pm$ 6/100/ml, Heatresistant bacteria 5 $\pm$ 1ml, and Enterococcus 2 $\pm$ 1/100/ml. The percent of over than 1000/ml in SPC and psychrophilic bacteria of 78 farm water was 11.5% and 23.1%, respectively. The rate of over than 10/ml in coliform and heat-resistant bacteria was 12.8% and 15.4%, respectively and the rate of over than 10/100 ml in E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enterococcus was 8.9%, 33.3%, and 2.6%, respectively. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was no significant between any other indicator organisms, and psychrophilic bacteria was significant with only SPC but other indicator organisms were highly significant with each other.

  • A study was conducted to find out the biological contamination of wells in Chon Ho Dong areas, Seoul, Korea from May 4, 1971 through May 18 1971. Coliform groups were detected by membrane filter method and general sanitary conditions were checked. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) 61 wells (81.3%) out of 75 wells showed the evidence of coliform group. In urban areas it is recommended to use disinfectants for wells pretty frequently. 2) The wells in native villages were less contaminated than those in new villages established by poor people from slum areas of Seoul. 9 out of 15 wells at Song Pa Dong, which is However, at Bang E Dong's new village, 19 out of 20 wells were contaminatd by coliform groups. 3) Coliform groups were positive at 57 out of 61 open wells, while only 4 out of 14 pumping wells showed the evidence of coliform groups. 4) 38 out of 40 poorly drained wells were contaminated, however, 13 out of 25 well drained wells were coliform organisms positive.

  • The purpose of this research was to test multiplex polymerase chain reaction in investigating the microbiological quality of the risky surfaces in social living places of a military base where over 15 thousand people live together. In 22 samples of 99, there were no bacteria. Only four of the samples contained Shigella, and one of them contained Salmonella, but 77 of the samples contained thermotolerant coliform organisms. There was no statistically significant difference among the microbiological quality of different sites and different equipment surfaces (p>0.05).

  • It was intended to investigate the effect of the microbiological kitchen hygiene such as dishclothes and scrubbers. The 8indicator organisms (standard plate counts, coliform, heterotroph, enterococcus, staphylococcus, heat-stable bacteria, psychrotroph, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) were detected highly in dishwaters, dishcloth and scrubber. Coliform and Staphylococcus aureus were appeared on dishcloth dominantly than the scrubber, and the scrubbers were intruded by hetrotrophs and psychrotrophs numerously than dishclothes. The germ-resistant sponge inhibited the growth of the most of test strain, and appeared the about 100% reduction rate after 24 hr, but did not affect Pseudomonas aeruginosa and P. fragi so typically after 24 hr. The anti-microorganism durability of germ-resistant sponge, treated with food soil, was maintained by 10 days, the early stage strain density was founded in 20 days, and the strains grew after 30 days.

  • Combined sewer overflow (CSOs) is a primary diffuse source degrading water quality of urban streams. In this study, CSOs caused by 5 different rainfall events at an urban watershed located in Daejeon city were monitored for the indicator microorganism concentrations. Event mean concentration (EMC) of the indicator microorganisms were: total coliform = $2.46{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; fecal coliform = $1.01{\times}10^6CFU/100mL$; E.coli = $5.20{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$; and Fecal Streptococci = $6.08{\times}10^5CFU/100mL$. In addition, coliform concentrations were well correlated with suspended solid concentrations and the first flush effects were identified. Settling tests were carried out to estimate removal rate of indicator organisms by sedimentation from CSOs. As microorganisms are discharged in association with suspended solid, ten minutes of settlement can lower 44% of indicator microorganism leading.

  • Open heart surgery patients have additional risks arising from the special nature of the operative procedure. And postoperative infections in patients with extracorporeal circulation are associated with high incidence of serious sequelae. To investigate the incidence and organisms of contamination, and the relation between the duration of extracorporeal circulation and contamination, following study was done. Eighty-four of the open heart surgery patients were examined with cultures from the blood and priming solution before and after bypass. 1. Cultures before bypass were sterile, but 2 cases of cultures from the blood and priming solution after bypass were positive, and culture positive group was 5% of all patients. 2. The organisms were Gram-negative, aerobic coliform bacilli; 3. The culture positive group had significantly longer bypass time.
