Metallic Crack Detections by Planar Inductive Coil Sensor Under AC and DC Magnetic Fields

  • To detect the surface and the opposite side cracks on iron specimen under AC and DC magnetic fields, the planar inductive coil sensors were employed. When the induced signals were measured, the planar inductive coil sensor and the magnetic field source were lifted off about 2 mm from the top surface of the specimen. AC magnetic fields and DC magnetic fields were applied to the specimens by single straight Cu coil and NdFeB permanent magnet, respectively. The detected signals at crack positions were good coincidence with those of the simulation results.

  • 본 논문은 Air-cored induction 코일 센서의 고주파 동작 특성에 대한 실험적 관계식을 제시한다. Air-cored induction 코일 센서는 입, 출력 간 선형성이 좋고 저주파 영역에서 정확한 출력 특성 예측이 가능해서 널리 사용되지만 민감도가 낮다는 단점이 있다. 반면, 고주파 영역에서는 코일 센서 구성상의 기생효과로 인해 민감도가 크게 향상되지만 인가되는 자기장 주파수에 대한 출력 민감도의 의존성으로 인해 사용이 제한되어 왔다. 그러나 최근 고정된 주파수의 자기장을 대상으로 하는 비파괴 자기 검사법에서 검사 성능을 향상시키기 위하여 이와 같은 코일 센서의 고주파 특성을 이용하기 시작하였는데 코일 센서를 고주파 영역에서 사용하기 위해서는 고주파 영역에서의 센서 특성에 대한 예측이 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 다양한 코일 센서의 구성 조건하에서 코일 센서의 주파수 응답 특성을 측정하고 이 측정 결과를 기반으로 하여, 민감도가 최대가 되는 공진 주파수와 최대 민감도를 코일 센서 단면의 지름, 권선 지름, 그리고 권선 수와 같은 구성 파라미터의 함수식으로 근사하였다. 함수식은 실험결과를 잘 반영하며, 추론된 함수식으로부터 원하는 사양을 가지는 코일 센서의 구성 방안 및 관련 회로 설계 사양을 얻을 수 있다.

코일센서를 이용한 차량검지기 적용성에 대한 연구 (Study on Applicability of the Vehicle Detection Using a Coil Sensor)

  • 본 연구는 코일센서를 이용한 차량검지기의 적용성을 검정하고자 한다. 이를 위하여 코일센서를 이용하여 차량검지기의 발진회로부, 데이터 수집부, 데이터 모니터링 및 저장부로 구성된 실험환경을 구성하였다. 실험환경에서 얻은 코일센서의 주파수를 분석한 결과, 코일센서를 이용한 차량검지기의 주파수가 안정적으로 산출되는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 시공 편의성을 확인하기 위하여 실제 도로에 기존 루프검지기와 코일센서를 이용한 차량검지기를 적용한 후 커팅면적 및 재료 소요량, 평균 작업시간을 측정하여 시공 용이성을 비교하였다. 비교 결과, 코일센서를 이용할 경우 시공시간의 개선이 가능하며, 도로 커팅 면적을 줄일 수 있어 기존의 루프검지기 설치 방식보다 코일센서를 이용한 차량검지기 시공 방식이 더 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

  • Dual electromagnetic sensor is used for sensing the weld line. The sensor consists of excitation and two sensing coil wound over the ferro-magnetic core. By using the dual sensor, the effect of noise is minimized. It is based on the generation of eddy currents in the welding plate by passing current through the excitation coil. The sensor can be used to track the butt joints having no gap between them, where a vision based sensor fails to track. Sensor sensitivity depends on the number of coil turns, frequency of excitation, distance of a sensor from the work piece, diameter of core, etc. The whole system consists of a sensor, a signal processing board, a motion controller and a personnel computer (PC). The raw sensor signal is processed using the signal processing board. It consists of amplification, rectification, filtering, averaging, offset adjustment, etc. Based on sensor data, the motion controller adjusts the position of a welding torch.

An Experimental Study of Nondestructive Testing System to measure Dimension of Cylindrical Rod using Solenoid Eddy Current Coil

  • An experimental study of an eddy current nondestructive testing system to measure dimensions of cylindrical metallic rods, such as cross-sectional area or diameter, is presented. Impedance characteristics of a solenoid sensor, which are generally based on Maxwell's equations in electromagnetic field, are briefly discussed for inspecting geometrical parameters of the coil sensor and testing materials. A measurement system for detecting the diameter of the metallic rod is implemented. This instrument has capabilities for detecting the sensor output signals and estimating demensions of the testing material, continuously. As a result, it was shown that the eddy current sensor with an encircling coil could estimate the diameter of metallic rod. The implemented measurement system gives accurate information for inspecting the dimension of conducting rod with good sensitivity.

  • The stabilization of fiber-optic current sensor has been achieved by using a broadband light source and a Faraday Rotator Glass fiber sensor coil. The very low Photo-elastic constant of the fiber suppressed output variations within ${\pm}0.4[%]$ when mechanical disturbance was applied to the sensor coil. Noise characteristics, with different light sources, have also been analyzed, which experimentally proved that the wider bandwidth source showed the better noise performance.

  • In this paper, we have a fluxgate sensor with ferrite core. Thought sensor is consist of one excitation coil and two pick-up coil, and A lock-in amplifier circuity is designed for Signal processing of picking up 2nd harmonics from pick-up coils. Excitation coils is turned by 20 turns, and pick-up coil for picking up harmonics is turned by 40 turns eachother. It convert 2nd harmonics to DC output voltage. Measured output voltage and sensitivity, direction of sensor about out side magnetic field, and also sensor output properties about excitation frequency and current.

Gas-Flow Sensor using Optical Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG)

  • We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to $20{\ell}/min$ with a resolution of approximately $1{\ell}/min$ at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were $15.3\;pm/\ell/min$ for 100 mA and $20.2\;pm/\ell/min$ for 120 mA.

Time dependent numerical simulation of MFL coil sensor for metal damage detection

  • Recently, non-destructive health monitoring methods such as magnetic flux leakage (MFL) method, have become popular due to their advantages over destructive methods. Currently, numerical study on this field has been limited to simplified studies by only obtaining MFL instead of induced voltage inside coil sensor. In this study, it was proposed to perform a novel numerical simulation of MFL's coil sensor by considering vital parameters including specimen's motion with constant velocity and saturation status of specimen in time domain. A steel-rod specimen with two stepwise cross-sectional changes (i.e., 21% and 16%) was fabricated using low carbon steel. In order to evaluate the results of numerical simulation, an experimental test was also conducted using a magnetic probe, with same size specimen and test parameters, exclusively. According to comparative results of numerical simulation and experimental test, similar signal amplitude and signal pattern were observed. Thus, proposed numerical simulation method can be used as a reliable source to check efficiency of sensor probe when different size specimens with different defects should be inspected.

  • 전력계통 시스템의 대전류 측정용으로 편광 분석형 광섬유 전류센서를 제작하였다. 선형복굴절에 의한 출력의 왜곡을 최소화하기 위하여 FRG 광섬유를 센서코일로 사용하였으며, 다양한 광원을 이용하여 광원에 따른 출력 노이즈 비교분석을 수행하였다. FRG광섬유 센서코일에 기계적 변형을 인가한 경우 $\pm$0.4(%) 이내의 출력안정도를 얻었으며, ASE 광폭 광원을 사용할 경우 단일모드 레이저에 비해 23(㏈) 정도의 노이즈 감쇄 효과를 얻을 수 있음을 확인하였다.
