  • In the present study, ceramic brake pads without fiber phases were manufactured by the low temperature heat treatment below$ 700 ^{\circ}C$. The manufacturing parameters of ceramic brake pads and those levels were investigated by the analysis results of signal-to-noise ratios, ANOVA based upon the Taguchi method. The ceramic brake pads prepared in the Mg experiment had a friction coefficient of 0.30~0.55 very close to the target coefficient (0.35~0.45) of commercial brake pads utilized in the automobiles. The frictional properties of ceramic brake pads could be stabilized with the adjustment of amounts of lubricating additives. The optimum preparation conditions as well as batch formulations for the fabrication of non-fibrous ceramic brake pads were finally determined using Taguchi method in this study.

  • Hydrodynamic performance of a movable submerged breakwater was analyzed using energy dissipation model. Based on two-dimensional boundary element method the equation of motion including a viscous dissipation term proportional to velocity squared was solved by Newton-Raphson method. Energy dissipation coefficients as well as reflection and transmission coefficients of a submerged flat plate were calculated with various plate lengths and thickness. Both real and imaginary components of body displacement and forces were used to solve the motion of breakwater accurately. The effect of the magnitude of dissipation coefficient on the body displacement was evaluated. The results from the potential theory with no dissipation term were found to be an overestimate in resonance frequency.

  • A design optimization of hypersonic flight vehicle has been studied by using upwind Navier-Stokes method and numerical optimization method. CFD method is linked to numerical optimization method by using a Bezier curve and a design optimization of blunt nose hypersonic flight vehicle has been studied. Heat transfer coefficient and drag coefficient are selected as objective functions or design constraints. The Bezier curve-based shape function was applied to blunt body shape.

  • In this paper, Allard's modelling method which employs the method of acoustic transfer matrix(ATM) is applied to yield more precise results in the analysis of porous sound absorbing material. The method of ATM, based on Biot's theory, is known to play an important role in the estimation of the sound absorption when a sound projects onto the material. In the case of a single layered porous sound absorbing material, the surface impedance and the absorption coefficient by using the method of ATM are estimated. With the variation of the material properties, sound absorption characteristics and analyzed. Transmission Loss in a combination of the porous sound absorbing material with a thin plate is predicted.

  • Finishing is the final process in molds manufacturing and consumes much process time. Also, it influences on surface quality of molds. But, there are few systematic methods to control the process. In this work, basic experiments were carried out to study the machining characteristics of the finishing tools. From the experiments, critical surface roughness and wear coefficient are suggested to reduce the number of finishing steps and to plan a systematic finishing procedure. Comparison experiments were carried out between the expert's method and the new method, which is based on the results of this research. From the experiments, it is verified that the systematic method takes less time and generates less form error in the machined surface than the worker's method.

Estimation of Tire-Road Friction Coefficient using Observers (관측기를 이용한 노면과 타이어 간의 마찰계수 추정)

  • In this paper real-time estimation methods for identifying the tire-road friction coefficient are presented. Taking advantage of the Magic Formula Tire Model, the similarity technique and the specific model for the vehicle dynamics, a reduced order observer/filtered-regressor-based method is proposed. The Proposed method is evaluated on simulations of a full-vehicle model with an eight state nonlinear vehicle/transmission model and nonlinear suspension model. It has been shown through simulations that it is possible to estimate the tire-road friction from measurements of engine rpm, transmission output speed and wheel speeds using the proposed identification method. The proposed method can be used as a useful option as a part of vehicle collision warning/avoidance systems and will be useful in the implementation of a warning algorithm since the tire-road friction can be estimated only using RPM sensors.

  • In this study, respiratory motion is modeled by a 2-Dimensional linear expanding-shrinking movement. According to the introduced model, respiratory motion imposes phase error, non-uniform sampling and amplitude modulation distortions on the acquired MRI data. When the motion parameters are known or can be estimated, a reconstruction algorithm based on superposition method was used to removed the MRI artifact. For the purpose of estimating unknown motion parameters, we applied the spectrum shift method to find the respiratory fluctuation function, the x directional expansion coefficient and its center, and also we used the minimum energy method to find the y directional expansion coefficient and its center. The effectiveness of this presented method is shown by Computer simulations.

  • The partitioning tracer method has been studied as an alternative method for characterizing aquifers contaminated by nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). Accurate partition coefficients of tracers partitioning between NAPL and water are needed to improve the reliability of the partitioning tracer method. In this research, partition coefficients of alcohol tracers partitioning between benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) compounds and water are estimated from using the approach of equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN). General agreement was observed in between the measured and estimated partition coefficients. Based on these results we can verify that the EACN approach is suitable for estimating the partition coefficient.

  • This study presents a new method to derive the constraint coefficient from the degree of angular deformation caused by welding, as measured experimentally by varying the shape of welded joints and the magnitude of constraints and from analysis results given by the elastic FEM method. The equivalent load was then calculated with this constraint coefficient. The validity of the numerical analysis involved in this new method was confirmed by its agreement with the experimental results. As for the effects of the constraints based on the shape of the welded joints in the case of Butt welding when the constraint coefficients are not considered, the deformed quantity produced by analysis is larger that produced by experiment and consequently is largely affected by the constraints.
