  • This study presents the air side heat transfer and friction characteristics of fin-tube heat exchangers. Variations of heat transfer performance in each row are investigated in the present work. Experiments were performed for the Louver fin-tube heat exchangers using air-enthalpy type calorimeter, which is based on air-enthalpy method described in ASHRAE standards. The air velocity was varied from 0.7 to 2.5 m/s with 0.3 m/s interval. The results are plotted in terms of Colburn j-factor and friction factor of with respect to Reynolds number in the range of 200 to 1100.

  • In this paper we proposed a dada-aided Doppler estimation method for underwater acoustic communication. The training sequence is non-dedicate, hence it can be designed for Doppler estimation as well as channel equalization. We assume the channel has been equalized and consider only flat-fading channel. First, based on the training symbols the theoretical received sequence is composed. Next the least square principle is applied to build the objective function, which minimizes the error between the composed and the actual received signal. Then an iterative approach is applied to solve the least square problem. The proposed approach involves an outer loop and inner loop, which resolve the channel gain and Doppler coefficient, respectively. The theoretical performance bound, i.e. the Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) of estimation is also derived. Computer simulations results show that the proposed algorithm achieves the CRLB in medium to high SNR cases.

  • Heart sounds are the main obstacle in lung sound analysis. To tackle this obstacle, we propose a diagnosis algorithm that uses singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and frequency features of heart and lung sounds. In particular, we introduce a frequency coefficient that shows the frequency difference between heart and lung sounds. The proposed algorithm is applied to a synthetic mixture of heart and lung sounds. The results show that heart sounds can be extracted successfully and localizations for the first and second heart sounds are remarkably performed. An error analysis of the localization results shows that the proposed algorithm has fewer errors compared to the SSA method, which is one of the most powerful methods in the localization of heart sounds. The presented algorithm is also applied in the cases of recorded respiratory sounds from the chest walls of five healthy subjects. The efficiency of the algorithm in extracting heart sounds from the recorded breathing sounds is verified with power spectral density evaluations and listening. Most studies have used only normal respiratory sounds, whereas we additionally use abnormal breathing sounds to validate the strength of our achievements.

  • The number of adders and critical paths in a multiplier block of a multiple constant multiplication based implementation of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter can be minimized through common subexpression elimination (CSE) techniques. A two-bit common subexpression (CS) can be located recursively in a noncanonic sign digit (CSD) representation of the filter coefficients. An efficient algorithm is presented in this paper to improve the elimination of a CS from the multiplier block of an FIR filter so that it can be realized with fewer adders and low logical depth as compared to the existing CSE methods in the literature. Vinod and others claimed the highest reduction in the number of logical operators (LOs) without increasing the logic depth (LD) requirement. Using the design examples given by Vinod and others, we compare the average reduction in LOs and LDs achieved by our algorithm. Our algorithm shows average LO improvements of 30.8%, 5.5%, and 22.5% with a comparative LD requirement over that of Vinod and others for three design examples. Improvement increases as the filter order increases, and for the highest filter order and lowest coefficient width, the LO improvements are 70.3%, 75.3%, and 72.2% for the three design examples.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm using wavelet transform for still image database retrieval. Especially, it uses only the lowest frequency sub-band in multi-level wavelet transform so that a retrieval system uses a smaller quantity of memory and takes a faster processing time. We extract different textured features, statistical information such as mean, variance and histogram, from low frequency sub-band. Then we measure the distances between the query image and the images in a database in terms of these features. To obtain good retrieval performance, we use the first feature (mean and variance of wavelet coefficients) to filter out most of the unlikely images. The rest of the images are considered to be candidate images. Then we apply the second feature (histogram of wavelet coefficient) to rank all the candidate images. To evaluate the algorithm, we create various distorted image databases using MIT VisTex texture images and PICS natural images. Through simulations, we demonstrate that our method can achieve performance satisfactorily in terms of the retrieval accuracy as well as the both memory requirement and computational complexity. Therefore it is expected to provide good retrieval solution for JPEG-2000 using wavelet transform.

  • This paper suggests the improvement of the Sumjinkang for the estimation of areal averages of heavy rainfall events based on the optimal network and three existing networks. The problem consists of minimizing an objective function which includes both the accuracy of the areal mean estimation as expressed by the Kriging variance and the economic cost of the data collection. The wellknown geostatistical variance-reduction method is used in combination with SATS which is an algorithm of minimization. At the first stage, two kinds of optimal solutions are obtained by two trade-off coefficients. One of them is a optimal solution, the other is an alternative. At the second stage, a quasi optimal network and a quasi alternative are suggested so that the existing raingages near to the selected optimal raingages are included in the two solutions instead of gages of new gages.

  • This study presents the characteristics of nocturnal inversion layer and their effect on the concentration variations of surface air pollutants using tethersonde and automatic weather station (AWS, 2 layer tower) system in Ulsan during 2003, The method for the distinction of inversion intensity was decided based on the sum of nocturnal temperature gradient. As the results, there was a close correlation (correlation coefficient of 0,76) between the maximum inversion height obtained from tethersonde and the sum of nocturnal temperature gradient. The air pollutant concentration was also directly proportional to the inversion intensity. When the inversion intensity was strong in the nighttime, ozone $(O_3)$ concentration was lower, while nitrogen dioxide $(NO_2)$ concentration was higher. The carbon monoxide (CO) concentration was gradually higher according to the nocturnal inversion intensity, whereas sulfur dioxide $(SO_2)$ concentration was relatively constant. In addition, we found that there was no correlation between the inversion intensity and TSP concentration.

  • This paper describes the possibility of analyzing gait pattern from the changes of the lower leg electrical impedance. This impedance was measured by the four-electrode method. Two current electrodes were applied to the thigh, knee, and foot., and two potential electrodes were applied to the lateral, medial, and posterior position of human leg. The correlation coefficients of the joint angle and the impedance change from human leg movement was obtained using a electrogoniometer and 4ch impedance measurement system developed in this study. We found the optimal electrode position for knee and ankle joint movements based on high correlation coefficient, least interference, and maximum magnitude of impedance change. The correlation coefficients of the ankle, knee, and the hip movements were -0.913, 0.984 and 0.823, respectively. From such features of the human leg impedance, it has been made clear that different movement patterns exhibit different impedance patterns and impedance level. This system showed feasibility that lower leg movement could be easily measured by impedance measurement system with a few skin-electrodes.
