Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify predictors on drinking problems of university students. Methods: The participants were 359 students by convenience sampling in P city. Data were collected from October 15 to December 20, 2007 using drinking problems questionnaire, Global assessment of recent stress scale, CES-D and self-esteem scale. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: There were positive correlations between stress and drinking problems, between depression and drinking problems. Also, there were negative correlations between stress and self-esteem, between depression and self-esteem. In stepwise multiple regression analysis, the most powerful predictor of drinking problems was depression. Conclusion: The results suggest that effective management of depression and stress can be considered when developing a prevention program of drinking problems for university students.

It is very important to detect and evaluate the surface or subsurface flaws because of their influences on mechanical properties of materials. Rayleigh wave and creeping wave are commonly used for the detection of surface and subsurface flaws. These techniques, however, have following problems. Each amplitudes are remarkably affected by the surface condition and evaluation of echo pattern is usually difficult because shear wave mode propagate in the material at the same time. On the other hand, surface SH-wave which is horizontally polarized shear wave traveling along near surface layer is an attractive technique for the surface or subsurface material characterization and this technique is useful to solve the problems mentioned above. In this paper, The stability and transmission coefficient of SH waves through a viscous fluid layer is theoretically studied and simulated. Its results agreed well with the theoretical expectation for the experimental verification. These experimental results show that viscosity of couplants, thickness of couplant and surface roughness are closely related to transfer efficiency in surface SH angle beam method.
This paper presents the braking friction and wears on the rubbing surfaces of a friction pad-disk brake. In this study, four friction disk specimens are sampled from unused and used disks in which are taken from the disk brake system when the friction induced vibration and noise problems have been occurred during a braking period at a running period of 10,000 km, 20,000 km, and 30,000 km in random. The experimental results indicate that the tribological characteristics of an unused disk brake shows equal and stable as a friction coefficient and temperature distributions during a braking friction/wear test period including a total friction mode from the start to running periods. But the used disk brake shows unstable and uneven friction modes between an outside and inside rubbing surfaces of a disk brake in terms of a friction coefficient and wears. This may lead to a friction induced friction vibration and noise problems of a used disk brake.

The increase of impermeable area ratio is causing hydrologic cycle problems in urban areas and groundwater depletion in rural areas, permeable pavements are getting attention to expand permeable areas. The performance of the permeable concrete block pavement, which is part of the permeable pavement, is greatly affected by the porosity. In addition, the permeability coefficient is a major factor when designing permeable concrete block pavement. Existing porosity and permeability test methods have problems such as uneconomical or poor field applicability. The object of this study was to develop a methodology for evaluating porosity and permeability coefficient using a surface image of a permeable concrete block. Specimens are manufactured with various porosity ranges and porosity and permeability tests are performed. After surface image preprocessing, normalization and binarization methods were compared. Through this, the method with the highest correlation with the lab test result was determined. From the results, the PDR (pore determined ratio) was obtained. Simple linear regression analysis is performed with PDR and lab test results. The results showed a high correlation of R2 more than 0.8, and the errors were also low.
At the running speed higher than 250 km/h, several aerodynamic problems such as the increase of aerodynamic resistance, aerodynamic noise, pressure fluctuation at the tunnel entry, impulsive wave at the tunnel exit bring about the power consumption, deterioration of riding quality, and severe environmental noise. To solve these aerodynamic problems, the flow phenomena around the high speed train have to be analyzed in detail. In this study, the flow around the train is modelled as the 2-dimensional viscous compressible flow and the flow field is calculated numerically for the three different types of geometry and running speed. The aerodynamic drag coefficient and the pressure coefficient are evaluated each case.

The information technology brought us many kinds of conveniences to our life, but it also caused social problems such as privacy interference, unexpected personal information leaks, and nose generation by telephonic talks, etc. In this paper, the microphone system of the cellular phone is developed to prevent these problems caused by progress of information technology. The developed system was designed to detect only acoustic signals from a human being in the presence of various kinds of background noises. A windscreen was designed by use of micro-channels to eliminate the popping noise by the wind from the mouth of a speaker and four microphone array and signal processing techniques are applied to reduce background noise. The impact of the developed system was evaluated by experimental tests. The results show that the system can improve the required functions considerably.

In many practical problems in signal processing and control, the signal values are often restricted to belong to a finite number of levels. These questions are generally referred to as "finite alphabet" problems. There are many applications of this class of problems including: on-off control, optimal audio quantization, design of finite impulse response filters having quantized coefficients, equalization of digital communication channels subject to intersymbol interference, and control over networked communication channels. This paper will explain how this diverse class of problems can be formulated as optimization problems having finite alphabet constraints. Methods for solving these problems will be described and it will be shown that a semi-closed form solution exists. Special cases of the result include well known practical algorithms such as optimal noise shaping quantizers in audio signal processing and decision feedback equalizers in digital communication. Associated stability questions will also be addressed and several real world applications will be presented.
The carbonation of concrete is one of the major factors that cause durability problems in concrete structures. The rate of carbonation depends largely upon the diffusivity of carbon dioxide in concrete. The purpose of this study is to identify the diffusion coefficients of carbon dioxide for various concrete mixtures. To this end, several series of tests have been planned and conducted. The test results indicate that the diffusion coefficient increases with the increase of water-cement ratio. The diffusion coefficient decreases with the increase of relative humidity at the same water-cement ratio. The diffusion of carbon dioxide reached the steady state within about five hours after exposure. The content of aggregates also influences the diffusivity of carbon dioxide in concrete. It was found that the diffusion coefficient of cement paste is larger then that of concrete or mortar. The quantitative values of diffusivity of carbon dioxide in this study will allow more realistic assessment of carbonation depth in concrete structures.
The vertical drain method generate the disturbed zone, because the drainage should be penetrated into the in-situ ground. The characteristics of the smear zone generated cause the problems that the coefficient of permeability decreases and the consolidation time anticipated in the design is not properly shortened. In this study, in order to understand such influence, the laboratory test were carried out so as to reasonably determine the coefficient of consolidation in silt. For that procedure, mandrel of a diversity were penetrated into the soil tube with silt, and then the variation of pore water pressure was measured with the pore pressure meter, Then, the range of smear effect on silt was estimated with monitoring data through the laboratory test, and also analyzed with inputting the coefficient of consolidation into the theoretical equation.

The authors has developed the transfer influence coefficient method(TICM) which is an algorithm for the analysis of vibration suitable for a personal computer and applied to many structures such as straight-line beam, plate and shell structures. But TICM can't be applied to the closed loop system and is required extremely much time on the computation of complicate and large structures. Therefore, we now suggest the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM) overcoming these two problems, which consists on the concept of the substructure synthesis method and transfer influence coefficient method. TSCM is formulated for the free vibration analyses of a straight-line distributed beam structure and confirmed by the results of numerical computation to the numerical high accuracy and the high speed.
