  • For the Korean design of the PCCS (passive containment cooling system) in an innovative PWR, the overall thermal resistance around a condenser tube is dominated by the heat transfer coefficient of steam condensation on the exterior surface. It has been reported, however, that the calculated heat transfer coefficients by thermal-hydraulic system codes were much lower than measured data in separate effect tests. In this study, a new empirical model of steam condensation in the presence of a noncondensable gas was implemented into the MARS-KS 1.4 code to replace the conventional Colburn-Hougen model. The selected correlation had been developed from condensation test data obtained at the JERICHO (JNU Experimental Rig for Investigation of Condensation Heat transfer On tube) facility, and considered the effect of the Grashof number for naturally circulating gas mixture and the curvature of the condenser tube. The modified MARS-KS code was applied to simulate the transient response of the containment equipped with the PCCS to the large-break loss-of-coolant accident. The heat removal performances of the PCCS and corresponding evolution of the containment pressure were compared to those calculated via the original model. Various thermal-hydraulic parameters associated with the natural circulation operation through the heat transport circuit were also investigated.

  • For the sea-level performance test of rocket motor designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, ejectors with no induced secondary flow are generally used, which serves dual purposes of evacuating the test cell and performing as a supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED). The main concern of this research is to simulate starting transients in order to visualize evolution of internal shock structures in SED with different initial cell (vacuum chamber) pressures. RANS code with low Reynolds $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed for these computations. Numerical results were compared with the pressure measurements previously performed [Proceedings of 2004 Annual Conference, KIMST], and showed good agreements with pressure-time history of measured data. In the case of low vacuum chamber pressure, abrupt impingement of the under-expanded supersonic jet from the nozzle onto the diffuser wall was observed, whereas initial impingement point was located downstream and moved slowly upstream in the case of non-vacuum chamber pressure. In spite of initially dissimilar evolution of shock structures, iso-mach contour revealed that the steady shock structures had little difference except the location of flow separation and normal shock.

  • In the hierarchical universe, galaxy merger is predicted to be frequent, and thus it is an important element for understanding galaxy evolution. In particular, star formation is greatly enhanced during the merger. The aim of this study is to understand the position and rate change of star formation caused by equal-mass edge-on mergers. We use the GADGET2- N-body/SPH code, and fully consider gas cooling, star formation, and supernova feedback. We show the star formation rate (SFR), and the magnitude and color evolution of the merger remnants for 18 different configurations varying orbit elements and inclinations of host galaxies against orbit planes. Then we construct the mock images of the remnants and investigate on how equal-mass galaxy merger affects the SFR and color/magnitude evolution while considering dust reddening. We conclude that over 90% mass of SF in equal-mass merger is in the central region. SF in tidal feature involves a small fraction of new stars and thus is difficult to detect unless deep imaging is performed. Around 55 ${\pm}$ 5 percent of gas turns into stars until the final coalescence which typically corresponds to 0.8, 1.2, and 2.5 Gyr for direct, parabolic, and elliptical orbit, respectively. This result is roughly consistent with Cox et al. 2000. We plan to implement this result into semi-analytic model of galaxy formation. Caveats and future work on merging conditions are discussed.

  • In this work, we present the theoretical formulation, operator split solution procedure and partitioned software development for the coupled thermomechanical systems. We consider the general case with nonlinear evolution for each sub-system (either mechanical or thermal) with dedicated time integration scheme for each sub-system. We provide the condition that guarantees the stability of such an operator split solution procedure for fully nonlinear evolution of coupled thermomechanical system. We show that the proposed solution procedure can accommodate different evolution time-scale for different sub-systems, and allow for different time steps for the corresponding integration scheme. We also show that such an approach is perfectly suitable for parallel computations. Several numerical simulations are presented in order to illustrate very satisfying performance of the proposed solution procedure and confirm the theoretical speed-up of parallel computations, which follow from the adequate choice of the time step for each sub-problem. This work confirms that one can make the most appropriate selection of the time step with respect to the characteristic time-scale, carry out the separate computations for each sub-system, and then enforce the coupling to preserve the stability of the operator split computations. The software development strategy of direct linking the (existing) codes for each sub-system via Component Template Library (CTL) is shown to be perfectly suitable for the proposed approach.

  • One of the distinctive characteristics of the evolution of binary systems would be mass transfer. Close binary systems experience so-called Case A mass transfer during the main-sequence. We have performed calculations of the evolution of massive Case A (with the initial period 1.5 ~ 4.5 days) binary systems with the initial mass of 10 ~ 20 solar masses and mass ratio 0.5 ~ 0.95 using the MESA code. We find that in some systems, after the first mass transfer, the secondary stars evolve faster than the primary stars and undergo so-called 'reverse' mass transfer. Such phenomena tend to occur in relatively low-mass (initial mass < 16 solar masses) and close (initial period < 3 day) systems. Unless a system enters the common-envelope phase, the primary star would become a single helium star after the secondary star ends its life if the system were unbound by the neutron star kick. We find the various evolutionary implications of the remaining primary stars. In addition to the evolution into the compact single helium star progenitor, there is a possibility that the remaining primary star could evolve into a helium giant star, which could be a promising candidate for Type Ibn supernova progenitor, depending on the core mass. Further, we find that some primary stars satisfy the conditions for the formation of electron-capture supernova progenitor.

  • We present a new hydrodynamic simulation based on the unstructured moving mesh scheme. The simulation utilizes the Voronoi tessellation technique that produces polygonal cells composed of, on average, 13 surfaces each in 3D. We devise the incremental expanding method (IEM) and hybrid-neighbor searching algorithm and achieve the CPU time just proportional to the number of particles, i.e., O(N). We show the results of requisite tests for hydrodynamic simulations and demonstrate superiority of our code over the conventional codes using the stationary meshes. The applications in the context of cosmological and galactic simulations are also discussed.

  • The two competing theories of star formation are based on turbulence and ambipoar diffusion. I will first briefly explain the two theories. There have been analytical (or semi-analytic) models, which estimate star formation rates in a turbulent cloud. Most of them are based on the log-normal density PDF (probability density function) of the turbulent cloud without self-gravity. I will first show that the core (star) formation rate can be increased significantly once self-gravity of a turbulence cloud is taken into account. I will then present the evolution of molecular line profiles of HCO+ and C18O toward a dense core that is forming inside a magnetized turbulent molecular cloud. Features of the profiles can be affected more significantly by coupled velocity and abundance structures in the outer region than those in the inner dense part of the core. During the evolution of the core, the asymmetry of line profiles easily changes from blue to red, and vice versa. Finally, I will introduce a method for incorporating ambipolar diffusion in the strong coupling approximation into a multidimensional magnetohydrodynamic code.

  • We investigate the pair fractions of dark matter halos and galaxies in cosmological simulations. The cosmological simulations are performed by a tree-particle-mesh code GOTPM (Grid-of-Oct-Tree-Particle-Mesh) and the dark matter halos are identified by a halo finding algorithm PSB (Physically Self-Bound). The 'galaxy' pair fractions are obtained from galaxy catalogues of L-Galaxies semi-analytical galaxy formation runs in the Millennium database. We present and compare the pair fractions of the dark matter halos and galaxies as functions of redshifts, halo masses and ambient environments.

  • This paper presents an aspect-oriented approach to simulation design and analysis in system design phase for integrated logistics system simulation. The integrated logistics system composed of AS/RS (Automated Storages and Retrieval System), AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicle System), STVs (Sorting Transfer Vehicle System) and Conveyor System is designed by using the aspect-oriented approach and UML (Unified Modeling Language). The multi-factorial design of experiments and regression analysis are used for design parameters of the system and Evolution Strategies is used to verify each parameter. Aspect-oriented approach for the integrated logistics system simulation shows the advantages of code reusability, extendible, modulation, easy improvement and a better design technique.
