A new type of cross-linked methylaluminoxane (MAO)-supported cocatalyst has been prepared by the reaction of a soluble MAO and a cross-liking agent such as an aromatic diamine compound. The cross-linked MAO-supported cocatalyst was used for the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of bis(n-butylcyclopentadienyl) zirconium dichloride, (n-BuCp)$_2$ZrCl$_2$. The catalyst activity of (n-BuCp)$_2$ZrCl$_2$ cocatalyzed with the new supported cocatalyst was higher than that of the commercial silica-supported MAO (SMAO) cocatalyst. The molecular weight and the bulk density of the polyethylene produced by using the new supported cocatalyst were slightly higher than those of polyethylene synthesized using commercial SMAO. The resulting polyethylene particles possess spherical morphologies with very few fine particles.
Metallocenes, whether using a cocatalyst or not, act as catalysts in ethylene polymerization. The positive charge on the transition metal of a metallocene might have an important role in polymerization as an active site in our model approach. Using semiempirical calculations in the absence of cocatalyst, we show one of the possibilities that the positive charge on a metallocene might be more easily transferred through the Cp ring of a ligand to the ethylene than to transfer directly from the transition metal to the ethylene. In these calculations, the charge on titanium in an eight C2H4 system is transferred and a polymer chain is produced. This reaction takes place only when ethylenes are arranged in a particular direction with respect to the ring, but does not take place for ethylenes near Ti or Cl atoms. The same mechanism is shown for a metallocene ligand which is sterically hindered or where the Cp ring is replaced by fluorenyl. These results suggest an entirely new polymerization mechanism in the absence of a cocatalyst in which the Cp ring is the active site.

We synthesized polyethylene, poly(ethylene-co-1-decene), poly(ethylene-co-p-methylstyrene), and poly(ethylene-ter-1-decene-ter-p-methystyrene) using a rac-$Et(Ind)_2ZrCl_2$ metallocene catalyst and a methylaluminoxane cocatalyst system. The materials were characterized using nuclear magnetic spectroscopy and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To identify suitable reaction conditions for terpolymerization, we studied the effects of catalyst content, cocatalyst/catalyst molar ratio, polymerization time, and polymerization temperature. As the catalyst content increased, the catalytic activity and the molecular weight of the terpolymers increased. The catalytic activity sharply increased but little change was observed after a polymerization time of 30 min. The increase in the cocatalyst/catalyst molar ratio resulted in a decrease in the molecular weight of the terpolymers and an increase in the catalytic activity to some degree. The catalytic activity increased with increasing polymerization temperature, while the molecular weight of the terpolymers decreased.
In this study, flexible poly(ethylene-ter-1-hexene-ter-divinylbenzene) was prepared using four types of metallocene catalysts (rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2, rac-SiMe2(Ind)2ZrCl2, rac-SiMe2(2-Me-Ind)2ZrCl2, (C5Me5)TiCl2[O-2,6-iPr2(C6H3)]) and two types of borate catalysts (trityl tetrakisborate and dimethylanilinium tetrakisborate). The yield, catalytic activity, molecular weight, structure, composition, and thermal properties of the terpolymers prepared using the various catalysts and cocatalyst systems were evaluated. Epoxidation of the terpolymers was successfully performed and this transformation was studied by 1H NMR and FTIR.
Novel flexible terpolymers with a reactive moiety were synthesized by coordination polymerization with a metallocene catalyst and a cocatalyst system. C2-symmetric rac-Et(Ind)2ZrCl2 and tri-iso-butylaluminum/dimethylanilinium tetrakis (pentafluorophenyl) borate were employed as the catalyst and cocatalyst, respectively. We synthesized reactive terpolymers consisting of ethylene, a high α-olefin content (1-hexene, 1-octene, 1-decene, and 1-dodecene), and divinylbenzene. The structure and composition of the terpolymers were characterized by 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. The catalytic activity, polymer yield, molecular weight, and molecular weight distribution were measured as functions of the chain length and high content of α-olefins. Furthermore, the thermal properties and crystallinity of the terpolymers were determined by differential scanning calorimetry and wide-angle X-ray scattering.

Several palladium complexes containing ${\beta}$-ketoiminate and ${\beta}$-diketiminate ligands successfully produced poly(DCPD) possibly via vinyl addition. It was found that catalysts with ${\beta}$-diketiminate ligands containing bulkier aryl substituents showed the highest activity in the presence of MAO as a cocatalyst. Purity of DCPD is quite essential for the higher activity and small amount of organic solvent such as $CH_2Cl_2$ and toluene is required to reduce the viscosity of the reactant mixture for the higher activity. $^1H$ NMR spectra of produced polymers with N,N-dimethylanilinium tetra(pentafluorophenyl)borate (N,N-DAPFAr"$_4$) show that 5,6-double bond of DCPD is removed with 2,3-double bond remaining. Produced poly(DCPD) with MAO cocatalyst is quite rigid and insoluble in common organic solvents but rather brittle.
The copolymerization of ethylene (E) and norbornene (N) was examined by using various metallocene catalysts and modified-MAO(MMAO) cocatalyst. For $C_2$-symmetry catalysts such as rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$, M $e_2$Si(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$, M $e_2$Si(Cp)$_2$ZrC $l_2$ and Cs-symmetrical iPr(FluCp)ZrC $l_2$ as well as CGC and di-bridged zirconocene, the effects of catalyst structure and [N]/[E] feed ratio on catalyst activity, thermal property and [N] content of copolymer (COC) was investigated. For rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$ catalyst of a constant [N]/[E] feed ratio, the appropriate conditions of [Al]/[Zr] mole ratio, polymerization temperature and cocatalyst structure were found to be 3000, 4$0^{\circ}C$, MMAO cocatalyst, respectively. As [N]/[E] feed ratio increased, the incorporation of norbornene to copolymer increased while, the activity of catalyst decreased except for iPr(FluCp)ZrC $l_2$ With consideration of catalyst activity as well as N content, it was found that rac-Et(Ind)$_2$ZrC $l_2$/MMAO system exhibited relatively high activity and controllable $T_{g}$. Monomer reactivity ratio was determined by Kelen-Tudos method..
We have prepared the dinuclear half-sandwich CGC(constrained geometry catalyst) with polymethylene bridge $[Zr(({\eta}^5\;:\;{\eta}^1-C_9H_5SiMe_2NCMe_3)Me_2)_2\;[(CH_2)_n]$ [n=6(4), 9(5), 12(6)] by treating 2 equivalents of MeLi with the corresponding dichlorides compounds. To study the catalytic behavior of the dinuclear catalysts we conducted copolymerization of ethylene and 1-hexene in the presence of three kinds of boron cocatalysts, $Ph_3C^+[B(C_6F_5)_4]^-\;(B_1),\;B(C_6F_5)_3\;(B_3)$, and $Ph_3C^+[(C_6F_5)_3B-C_6F_4-B(C_6F_5)_3]^{2-}\;(B_2)$. It turned out that all active species formed by the combination of three dinuclear CGCs with three cocatalyst were very efficient catalysts for the polymerization of olefins. The activities increase as the bridge length of the dinuclear CGCs increases. At the same time the dinuclear cocatalyst exhibited the lowest activity among three cocatalysts. The prime observation is that the dinuclear cocatalyst gave rise to the formation of the copolymers with the least branches on the polyethylene backbone.
