Recently, floating green algae (FGA) in open oceans and coastal waters have been reported over wide area, yet accurate detection of these using traditional ground based measurement and chemical analysis in the laboratory has been difficult or even impossible due to the lack of spatial resolution, coverage, and revisit frequency. In contrast, spectral reflectance measurement makes it possible to quickly assess the chlorophyll content in green algae. Our objectives are to investigate the spectral reflectance of the FGA observed in the Yellow Sea and to develop a new index to detect FGA from satellite imagery, namely floating green algae index (FGAI), which uses relatively simple reflectance ratio technique. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) satellite images at 500m spatial resolution were utilized to produce FGAI which is defined as the ratio between reflectance at 860nm and 660nm bands. Both FGAI results yielded reasonable green algae detection at the regional scale distribution. Especially houly GOCI observations can present more detaield information of FGAI than low-orbit satellite.

The study on the temporal and spatial monitoring of passing vessels is important in terms of protection and management the marine ecosystem in the coastal area. In this paper, we propose the automatic detection technique of passing vessel by utilizing an artificial intelligence technology and broadband striation patterns which are characteristic of broadband noise radiated by passing vessel. Acoustic measurements to collect underwater noise spectrum images and ship navigation information were conducted in the southern region of Jeju Island in South Korea for 12 days (2016.07.15-07.26). And the convolution neural network model is optimized through learning and validation processes based on the collected images. The automatic detection performance of passing vessel is evaluated by precision (0.936), recall (0.830), average precision (0.824), and accuracy (0.949). In conclusion, the possibility of the automatic detection technique of passing vessel is confirmed by using an artificial intelligence technology, and a future study is proposed from the results of this study.

This study attempts to establish a system extracting and monitoring cultural grounds of seaweeds (lavers, brown seaweeds and seaweed fulvescens) and abalone on the basis of both KOMPSAT-2 and Terrasar-X data. The study areas are located in the northwest and southwest coast of South Korea, famous for coastal cultural grounds. The northwest site is in a high tidal range area (on the average, 6.1 m in Asan Bay) and has laver cultural grounds for the most. An semi-automatic detection system of laver facilities is described and assessed for spaceborne optic images. On the other hand, the southwest cost is most famous for seaweeds. Aquaculture facilities, which cover extensive portions of this area, can be subdivided into three major groups: brown seaweeds, capsosiphon fulvescens and abalone farms. The study is based on interpretation of optic and SAR satellite data and a detailed image analysis procedure is described here. On May 25 and June 2, 2008 the TerraSAR-X radar satellite took some images of the area. SAR data are unique for mapping those farms. In case of abalone farms, the backscatters from surrounding dykes allows for recognition and separation of abalone ponds from all other water-covered surfaces. But identification of seaweeds such as laver, brown seaweeds and seaweed fulvescens depends on the dampening effect due to the presence of the facilities and is a complex task because objects that resemble seaweeds frequently occur, particularly in low wind or tidal conditions. Lastly, fusion of SAR and optic spatial images is tested to enhance the detection of aquaculture facilities by using the panchromatic image with spatial resolution 1 meter and the corresponding multi-spectral, with spatial resolution 4 meters and 4 spectrum bands, from KOMPSAT-2. The mapping accuracy achieved for farms will be estimated and discussed after field verification of preliminary results.
Korea has experienced 10 a Cochlodinium polykrikoides red tide outbreaks during the last 10 years (1993-2002). The monitoring activities at National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) in Korea have been extended to all the coastal waters after the worst of fish killing by C. polykrikoides blooms in 1995. NFRDI is looking forward to finding out the feasibility of red tide detection around Korean waters using satellite remote sensing of NOAA/AVHRR, Orbview-2/SeaWiFS, IRS-P4/OCM and Terra/MODIS on real time base. In this study, we used several alternative methods including climatological analysis, spectral and optical methods which may offer a potential detection of the major species of red tide in Korean waters. The relationship between the distribution of SST and C. polykrikoides bloom areas was studied. In climatological analysis, NOAA, SeaWiFS, OCM satellite data in 20th and 26th August 2001 were chosen using the known C. polykrikoides red tide bloom area mapped by helicopter reconnaissance and ground observation. The 26th August, 2001 SeaWiFS chlorophyll a anomaly imageries against the imageries of non-occurring red tide for August 20, 2001 showed the areas C. polykrikoides occurred. The anomalies of chlorophyll a concentration from satellite data between before and after red tide outbreaks showed the similar distribution of C. polykrikoides red tide in 26th August, 2001. The distribution of the difference in SST between daytime and nighttime also showed the possibility of red tide detection. We used corrected vegetation index (CVI) to detect floating vegetation and submerged vegetation containing algal blooms. The simple result of optical absorption from C. polykrikoides showed that if we use the optical characteristics of each red tide we will be able to get the feasibility of the red tide detection.
Acoustical estimation of vertical distributions of zooplankton was carried out by using the backscattered signals of ADCP which was deployed in the Korea Strait in September, 1978. the backscattered signals of ADCP represents the total backward sound intensity caused by the scatters existing within the insonified water column of 8m deep. Based on these backscattered intensities, the estimated number of individual zooplankton (namely, Copepods) varies with depth such that in the surface layer above the thermocline, the numbers are exceedingly larger than the lower layer. It is also shown that a relatively larger number of individuals exists in the bottom cold water layer in the centeral part of the Strait. The horizontal distribution of the zooplankton in the surface layer across the west channel of the Strait shows that the number is higher in the coastal zone of the Korea and it decreases toward the central and then remains constant up to the vicinity of the Tsushima Island where it increases again. This type of distributions is well fitted to the one obtained at several stations by the conventional method at least in qualitative way. Therefore, it is quite plausible to use the ADCP data for monitoring the spatial and temporal distributions of zooplankton.
Steam and advection fogs are frequently observed in the Yellow Sea from March to July except for May. This study uses remote sensing (RS) data for the monitoring of sea fog. Meteorological data obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station provided a valuable information for the occurrence of steam and advection fogs as a ground truth. The RS data used in this study were GOES-9, MTSAT-1R images and QuikSCAT wind data. A dual channel difference (DCD) approach using IR and shortwave IR channel of GOES-9 and MTSAT-1R satellites was applied to detect sea fog. The results showed that DCD, texture-related measurement and the weak wind condition are required to separate the sea fog from the low cloud. The QuikSCAT wind data was used to provide the wind speed criteria for a fog event. The laplacian computation was designed for a measurement of the homogeneity. A new combined method, which includes DCD, QuikSCAT wind speed and laplacian computation, was applied to the twelve cases with GOES-9 and MTSAT-1R. The threshold values for DCD, QuikSCAT wind speed and laplacian are -2.0 K, $8m\;s^{-1}$ and 0.1, respectively. The validation results showed that the new combined method slightly improves the detection of sea fog compared to DCD method: improvements of the new combined method are $5{\sim}6%$ increases in the Heidke skill score, 10% decreases in the probability of false detection, and $30{\sim}40%$ increases in the odd ratio.

We examined the possibility of developing an early monitoring system using the shell valve movement activity of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) for early detection of low salinity water in coastal areas. At salinity levels of 30 psu and 20 psu, SVMs were detected $7.32{\pm}3.21times/hr$ and $7.11{\pm}3.90times/hr$, respectively, The patterns and times of SVMs were not significantly different between the two experiment phases. However, at 10 psu and 5 psu, shell valves were observed to be permanently closed in all experiments. Under combined condition (Group 1: temperature $15^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed from 20 psu to 30 psu over a 2 - 3 hr period, and then remained closed. In Group 2 (temperature $30^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed, which indicated that the physiological condition of the oysters reached a critical point. Thus, it may be possible to utilize SVMs as an early warning signal for low salinity water.

In this study, we located concrete substratum covered by oyster shells in the coastal area of Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea, and monitored changes in coverage of macroalgae for approximately a year from January 2020 to determine the potential for sea forest restoration and resourceization of the oyster shells. At the start of monitoring, we observed that macroalgae coverage of the oyster-shell-covered concrete substratum (treatment) was 10 - 80 %, whereas no macroalgae were attached to the normal concrete substratum (control). By November, macroalgae coverage of the treatment had increased by 49 % compared to that of the control. We concluded that covering oyster shell on a sea forest reef can promote macroalgae establishment and the possibility of sea forest restoration by the resourceization of oyster shells.
Temporal and spatial variations in surface ozone concentrations in Busan were investigated by using observation data from urban air quality sites during 2001-2016. The annual ozone concentrations showed a significant increasing trend of $+0.40ppb\;yr^{-1}$ in this period, with a more rapid increase of $+0.81ppb\;yr-1$ since 2010. For the monthly analysis, the increase in ozone concentration was the greatest in August ($+0.68ppb\;yr-1$). These ozone trends were due mainly to rising temperature ($+0.05^{\circ}C\;yr^{-1}$) and weak decreasing precipitation ($-6.42mm\;yr^{-1}$). However, the extreme weather events (heat wave, localized heavy rain, etc.) lead to an increase in short-term variability of ozone since 2010. The relatively low ozone concentrations in the downtown area were caused by high NOx emissions from mobile sources. The increases in ozone concentrations were observed at most of the air quality monitoring sites due to the reductions in anthropogenic emissions of NOx during 2001-2015. However, in the southern coastal area, lower rates of increase in ozone concentrations were observed by $-0.10{\sim}0.25ppb\;yr^{-1}$ due to the significant NOx emitted by ships in the Busan port and Busan new port.
The coastal areas around Palau Island and Tonga Island, near the Pacific equator, consist of coral reefs, mangrove and seaweed. In particular, understanding the optical properties of sea surface water in coral reef habitats helps improve the accuracy of remote sensing based habitat mapping and identify tropical ecosystem characteristics. Here, we collected spectral characteristics of sea surface water of Palau Island and Tonga Island and analyzed the concentration of suspended matters, absorption coefficient, and remote sensing reflectance to understand the seawater characteristics of the coral reef habitats. Based on the results of the suspended matter concentration analysis, we developed and verified an empirical algorithm to derive the concentration from satellite data using remote sensing reflectance of three bands, 555, 625, 660 nm, showed a high determinant coefficient, 0.98. In conclusion, coral reef habitats in tropical regions are characterized by CASE-I water in terms of the marine optics with oligotrophic properties, and require monitoring using continuous collection and analysis of field data.
