Shoreline changes its shape and attribution dynamically by natural, unnatural acts and is the most important information for defining a countries territory. These shorelines can apply to frame work of MGIS, and they are getting important because we can implement the data for creating monitoring systems around coastal areas. This study proposed an algorithm for extracting shorelines automatically using a new developed Lidar data which is applied in ocean and coastal areas. Its result was compared to shorelines which were derived from ground survey. It showed stable shorelines in both natural, and artificial coast areas. It showed the possibility of extracting shorelines with LiDAR data and proved the method was more efficient and economical compared to recent studies and methods.

Satellite-borne altimeters are one of the most important global ocean measurement and monitoring techniques available to modern oceanographers. While the U.S. Navy's GEOdetic SATellite (GEOSAT) mission in the mid-eighties firmly established its value, the full potential of satellite altimetry was not realized until the launch of the NASA/CNES TOPEX/Poseidon precision altimeter in 1992. Pusan is the largest coastal city with a population of about four mi18ion in Korea. Because of increased and confused traffic, photochemical air pollution become a major urban environmental problem recently. The photo-chemical air pollution weather forecasting method preciser than existing air pollution forecast method has been developed to forecast ozone episode days with meteorological conditions using the data measured at 7 air quality continuous monitoring stations from lune to September using 2 years (1994, 1995). The method developed in present study showed higher percentage correct and skill score than existing air pollution forecasting in KMA ( Korea Meteorological Administration).
This paper presents a method for assessing the risk of wave run-up and overtopping of existing coastal defences and for analysing the probability of failure of the structures under future hydraulic conditions. The recent UK climate projections are employed in the investigations of the influence of changing environments on the long-term performance of sea defences. In order to reduce the risk of wave run-up and overtopping caused by rising sea level and to maintain the present-day allowances for wave run-up height and overtopping discharge, the future necessary increase in crest level of existing structures is investigated. Various critical failure mechanisms are considered for reliability analysis, i.e., erosion of crest by wave overtopping, failure of seaside revetment, and internal erosions within earth sea dykes. The time-dependent reliability of sea dykes is analysed to give probability of failure with time. The results for an example earth dyke section show that the necessary increase in crest level is approximately double of sea level rise to maintain the current allowances. The probability of failure for various failure modes of the earth dyke has a significant increase with time under future hydraulic conditions.
If ground water levels of a confined fractured rock aquifer fluctuate with sea tides, individual values of hydrogeologic parameters can be determined. Tidal efficiency and time lag are first calculated from the water level data recorded at an observation device situated inland from the sea. The tidal efficiency factor of the aquifer at the seacoast is then determined from the observation in monitoring wells and used to calculate storage coefficient. Tidal efficiency factor and the tidal time lag are utilized to calculate storage coefficient and the results are compared. This method is tested in the southeastern coastal area of Busan, Korea. This is a simple and inexpensive way to test confined aquifer but the analysis should be performed according to the coastal environment.
Marine sediments and bivalves were sampled at 20 stations from coastal regions of Korea, to investigate the levels and patterns of some chlorobenzene isomers. Total chlorobenzenes were in the range of 0.32-3.55 ng/g dry weight in marine sediments and 0.26-0.84 ng/g wet weight in bivalves. Hexachlorobenzene levels in marine sediments and bivalves were lower thar or comparable to those levels of reported in other countries. Isomeric patterns of some chlorobenzenes in marine sediments and bivalves were slightly different. However, the pre-dominant isomer in marine sediments and bivalves was 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene. Hexachlorobenzene contribution to total concentrations was higher in sediments than in bivalves.
This measurement represents the effectiveness of sacrificial anode cathodic protection (SACP) system in a coastal bridge structure. To verify the cathodic protection (CP) effect, the monitoring sensor (DMS-100) that could measure potential, corrosion rate, current, concrete resistivity, and temperature was embedded. The measurement conducted for three years after CP system was installed. Specifically, due to the fact that fresh water and sea water was repeated in the bridge structure, this bridge structure presented special CP behavior. Measurement factors were CP potential, CP current, concrete resistivity, and depolarization potential. In addition, visual inspection was also carried out. As a result of current and depolarization measurement, CP system was well activated in most piers.
This study discusses the spatiotemporal characteristics of the geomorphological changes in Gwangyang Bay. In this study, we analyzed four aerial photos and nautical charts. The geomorphological changes that have occurred over time were identified using an MGIS (Marine geographic information system) overlay analysis. As a result, we were able to identify the geomorphological changes that have resulted from the coastal development and fairway dredging of Gwangyang Bay. This paper demonstrates that the marine geographic information system can be effective in monitoring the geomorphological changes in coastal zones.
