  • Heavy metal concentration of Fe, Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb were analysed from seaweeds (Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Caulacanthus okamurae), sediments and seawater at the two experimental sites of Daebul and Sabjin industrial complex in Mokpo coastal area with a control site (Heugsando). Highest values of heavy metals were found at two experimental sites influencing by various pollution sources such as industrial drains, sewage and harbours. In contrast, the lowest concentrations was observed at the control site without any pollution source. The concentration levels of accumulated heavy metals were in the following order: seaweeds > sediments > seawater. Similar spatial distribution patterns were observed at the seaweeds, sediments and seawater for the highest mean values of the different heavy metals. This result show that seaweeds could be used as a biomonitors of heavy metals at coastal region.

  • The CTD data observed in the sea northwest of Cheju Island have been analyzed to figure out the seasonal circulation around Cheju Island. Warm and saline waters flow into the Yellow Sea through the middle region of the Yellow Sea in winter and along the west coast of Korean Peninsula in summer. On the other hand, cold and less saline waters flow out of the Yellow Sea through the middle region in summer and along the west coast of Korean Peninsula in winter. These flows make the seasonal circulation around Cheju Island. As dynamics, the monsoon wind and the variation of Kuroshio transport have been suggested. Comparing the observational result, the circulation driven by the variation of Kuroshio transport is strengthened by monsoon winds in the numerical model.

  • The Central East Sea Tsunami caused huge damage to the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, eapecially Imwon port was damaged relatively strongly beacause of water depth variation which makes the wave concentration on this port. there are many virtual tsunami in east sea which has a possibility of happening. So, it is very important to expect the region which may be damaged by vritual tsunmis. In this study, modified dispersion-correction terms are used. The modified scheme has the advantage of using the constant spatial grid size and time step size even in real topography. Dynamic linking technique and staggered grid system are used. Using this model some cases of virtual tsunami was simulated and check the region which is occured maximum wave heights on the eastern sea of the Korean peninsula.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the regional ripple effects and residents' perceptions of the West Coast Highway on four regions of Chung-nam province. The data was collected through questionnaire interviews with 400 residents in four regions of the west coast area. After data cleaning, the statistical methods used were confirmative factor and cluster analysis with 309 sampled from four regions of Dangjin, Boryong, Seosan and Taean. The results of this study were as follows. First, it is classified, according to the residents' perceptions against the opening of the West Coast Highway, into four groups. Group A is the people who haven't lived there long and mainly consists of relatively young (30's-40's) males, while Group B is the people with lower incomes and middle-aged males (40's) who have lived there for 11 to 20 years. Group C is mainly the people who are middle-aged housewives in their 40's and who haven't lived there long and with a relatively higher income. Group D is the people who lived for less than five years and had lower incomes than other groups. The results show that their perceptions against the influence of regional development differ demographically from each other. In conclusion, it was determined that most of them were concerned that it, coupled with the construction of the West Coast Highway, would damage the surrounding countryside but believed it would contribute to the growth of the region's economy. Whereas groups A and B seem to acknowledge the necessity of regional development and environmental protection, groups B and D appear to be more content with the tourism development derived from the West Coast Highway and are paying more attention to such plans than other two groups.

  • Objectives: In an effort to examine the distribution of THMs (Trihalomethane) generated from chlorine disinfection by the drinking water treatment plants located on the east coast region of Gangwon-do, this study surveyed the distribution and concentrations of each component of THMs twice per month for 5 years from 2008 to 2012. Fluctuation pattern in the seasonal generation amount was identified. In addition, the correlation between the concentration of organic substances in water and THMs was assessed, along with stability of purified water quality supplied by the water treatment plants on the east coast by analyzing the composition ratio of each component that constitutes THMs and the detection frequency. Method: The research was done on purified water supplied by 29 water treatment plants in 7 cities and counties (Goseong-gun, Sokcho-si, Yangyang-gun, Gangneung-si, Donghae-si, Samcheok-si, Taebaek-si) located in Gangwon-do on the east coast. Water samples were collected twice a month from 2008 to 2012 and were investigate for chloroform, bromodichloromethane (BDCM), dibromochloromethane (DBCM), and bromoform, based on analysis through Purge-Trap (Tekmar 3000) devices using FID-attached GC (HP 6890, Hewlett Packard). Result: THMs concentration detected at Gangneung-si was 0.0086mg/L, Goseong-gun 0.0019mg/L, Donghae-si 0.0099 mg/L, Samcheok-si 0.0016 mg/L, Sokcho-si 0.0057 mg/L, Yangyang-gun 0.0027 mg/L and Taebaek-si 0.0038 mg/L. As the THMs composition rate, chloroform constitutes 51.4% followed bybromodichloromethane 22.3%, bromoform 15.2% and dibromochloromethane 11.1% respectively. Conclusion: Throughout the entire THMs survey areas and period, the maximum concentration was 0.072mg/L, which did not exceed the water quality standards (0.1 mg/L), and the overall average concentration was very low at 0.0044 mg/L.

  • This study is conducted to examine the data of climate or environmental change in the northeastern Asia during the last glacial maximum. A remarkable feature of the 18,000 BP biome reconstructions for China is the mid-latitude extention of steppe and desert biomes to the modem eastern coast. Terrestrial deposits of glacial maximum age from the northern part of Yellow Sea suggest that this region of the continental shelf was occupied by desert and steppe vegetation. And the shift from temperate forest to steppe and desert implies conditions very much drier than present in eastern Asia. Dry conditions might be explained by a strong winter monsoon and/or a weak summer monsoon. A very strong depression of winter temperatures at LGM. has in the center of continent has influenced in northeast Asia similarly. The vegetation of Hokkaido at LGM was subarctic thin forest distributed on the northern area of middle Honshu and cool and temperate mixed forest at southern area of middle Honshu in Japan. The vegetation landscape of mountain- and East coast region of Korea was composed of herbaceous plants with sparse arctic or subarctic trees. The climate of yellow sea surface and west region of Korea was much drier and temperate steppe landscape was extended broadly. It is supposed that a temperate desert appeared on the west coast area of Pyeongan-Do and Cheolla-Do of Korea. The reconstruction of year-round conditions much colder than today right across China, Korea and Japan is consistent with biome reconstruction at the LGM.

  • The tsunami that resulted from the Central East sea Earthquake, which registered 7.7 on the Richter scale, that occurred over the entire water region in Akita on May. 26, 1983 and the tsunami that was triggered by the Southwest off Hokkaido Earthquake (7.8 on the Richter scale) that occurred in Southwest off Hokkaido on July 12, 1993 are representative cases that led to considerable damage in life and property, not only in Japan but also in Korea. In this study, multi-grid method was used in order to reproduce sufficiently the shoaling effect that occurs as water depth becomes shallow in the shallow water region and moving boundary condition was introduced to consider the runup in the coastal region. For the tsunamis that exerted considerable effect on the East Sea coast of Korea that were caused by the Central East Sea Earthquake in 1983 and the Southwest off Hokkaido Earthquake in 1993, characteristics like water level rise and propagation in the East Sea coast will be examined using numerical simulations. At the same time, these values will be compared with observed values. In addition, maximum water level rise and change in the water level with respect to time that were caused by the tsunamis were examined at each location along the East sea coast. Usefulness of numerical analysis was verified by comparing with observed values.

  • Coastal circulations during the (surface condition of an) idealized cold-air outbreak are numerically investigated with two-dimensional, non-hydrostatic model in which a constant bottom-slope exists. The atmospheric forcing during a cold-air outbreak is incorporated as the surface cooling and the wind stress. When the offshore angle of the wind-stress vector, defined as the angle measured from the alongshore axis, is smaller than 45 degrees, a strong downwelling circulation develops near the coast. A sharp density front, which separates the vertically homogeneous region from the offshore stratified region, is formed near the coast and propagates offshore with time. Onshore side of the density front, small-scale circulation cells which are aligned in the direction perpendicular to the bottom begin to develop as the near-coast homogeneous region broadens. The surface cooling enhances greatly the development of the surface mixed layer by convective motions due to hydrostatic instability. The convective motions reach far below the hydrostatically unstable layer which is attached to the surface. The small-scale circulation cells are appreciably modified by the convetion cell and the density front develops far offshore compared to the case of no surface cooling. As to the effect of the bottom slope, the offshore distance of the density front increases (decreases) as the bottom slope decreases (increases), which results from the fact that the onshore volume-transport (Ekman transport) of the low-density upper seawater remains almost constant when the wind-stress is maintained constant. It is shown that the bottom slope is an essential factor for the formation of both the density front and the alongshore current when the surface cooling is the only forcing.

  • Heterogeneous sedimentary deposits with different soil colors and various degree of hardness are exposed in its foredune and tidal zone due to the effects of recently accelerated coastal erosion along the Ujeon Coast in Jeung-do, Shinan-gun. This study was conducted on the assumption that these sedimentary deposits were developed in different timing and environments. Thus, we can infer the geomorphic development processes of the area based on evidences like the physicochemical characteristics of each sedimentary layer. Several analysis of these sedimentary depositssuch as grain size analysis, X-ray Fluorescence Measurement (XRF), and Loss on ignition (LOI) were performed on central (Ujeon A) and southern (Ujeon B) parts of the Ujeon Coast. I found that the foredune sedimentary deposits have four stages of geomorphic development processes. In the initial stage of development, during the peak of the Last Interglacial Period (MIS 5e), basal deposits were accumulated in the low-energy environment of subtidal zones. In the second stage, during the Last Glacial Period (MIS 4~MIS 2), eolian sedimentary layers were developed by terrestrial aeolian processes by which fine materials were transported from the Yellow Sea which became a dry land exposed by lowered sea level. In the third stage, various mechanism existed for the formation of each sedimentary layer. In the region of Ujeon A, sedimentary layers were developed in the littoral zone environment dominated by marine processes during the maximum phase of transgression in the Holocene. Meanwhile, the region of Ujeon B began to form eolian sedimentary layers during MIS 2. In the last stage, thick coastal dune deposits, covered all over the Ujeon Coast. During the late Holocene (0.7~0.6 ka), terrestrial processes kept dominating the region, developing typical eolian sedimentary layers.

  • Marine environmental characteristics on the dinoflagellate cysts distribution in surface sediment of the southwest sea of Korea were investigated from 21 stations in September 2003, and 36 stations in June, 2004. The water mass characteristics indicated that the southwest sea of Korea is characterized by various oceanographic conditions due to coastal waters of Korea and China. The Tsushima warm currents and the cold bottom water of the Yellow Sea. Mud contents and chlorophyll a concentrations were higher in central region such as, Namhaedo, Yeosu and Goheung coast than in western region such as, Wando, Haenam and Jindo coast in the South Sea of Korea. A total of 35 taxa of dinoflagellate cysts were identified representing 21 genera, 33 species, 2 unidentified species. Cyst abundance ranged from 13 to 527 cysts $g-dry^{-1}$, showing higher abundance in the coastal areas than in western region of the South Sea of Korea. From the result of the PCA analysis, the distribution of dinoflagellate cysts was not only related to the different water masses which appeared in the southwestern sea but also to physical and biological parameters such as water temperature, light, surface sediment faces and phytoplankton biomass.
