  • Two species of fusulinids, viz., Pseudoschwagerina paraborealis and Quasifusulina sp. are described from the limestone core sample(90-B-1). The core sample was obtained from Imgokri, Boeungun, Chungcheongbukdo, Korea. Recognition of Pseudoschwagerina helped the authors to establish the Pseudoschwagerina Zone. Pseudoschwagerina paraborealis has been reported from the Bamchi Formation of Yeongweol coalfield in Korea and also from the Asselian and Sakmarian strata in Eurasia. The occurrence of Pseudoschwagerina paraborealis in the Boeun coalfield demonstrates the existence of the early Permian strata that are equivalent to the Bamchi Formation of Yeongweol coalfield. The authors report Quasifusulina sp. which indicates the early Permian period as well as Pseudoschwagerina paraborealis. It is the first time that the species of early Permian fusulinids are identified from the Boeun coalfield.

  • The goal of this study is to elucidate the fusulinid biostratigraphy of the Carboniferous limestones distributed in the Gangdong area of Samcheok coalfield, Korea. The Carboniferous strata of the study area mainly comprise alternaton of dark gray shale, dark gray and reddish sandstone, and gray limestone. The limestones consist mainly of wackestonepackstone containing various fossil fragments such as crinoid, coral, brachiopod, foraminifera, fusulinid, and bryozoa; this observation thus suggests that the study site was the shallow marine environments. A tital of 12 species belonging to 5 genera of fusulinids are identified from the limestones of the Gangdong geologic section: Ozawainella turgida Sheng, Ozawainella sp. A, Ozawainella magna Sheng, Pseudostaffella antiqua (Dutkevich), Pseudostaffella paracompressa Safonova, Pseudostaffella kimi Cheong, Pseudostaffella sp., Beedeina lanceolata (Lee and Chen), Beedeina samarica (Rauser-Chernoussova), Beedeina sp. A, Neostaffella sphaeroidea cuboides Rauser-Chernoussova, and Hanostaffella hanensis Cheong. Such fusulinids species were reported from the lower part of the Geumcheon Formation in Samcheok coalfield and the middle Moscovian stage in Eurasia. On the basis of the fusulinid biostratigraphic correlation of the Gangdong geologic sections (A) to (C), the limestone should be overlapped by faults and folds. Moreover the stratigraphic thickness of the limestone is thinner than the thickness of the limestone outcrop of the Gangdong geologic section. Therefore, the stratigraphic sequence of the Gangdong geologic section is represented as the Gangdong geologic section (A).

  • To consider environmental characteristics in the scope of geochemistry of streams, Hwasun area, soil, sediment and water samples near/in the streams were analyzed in texture and metal contents of soil and sediment and in quality in water. From those analyses, the soils are loamy sand, sandy loam, loam and silty loam in texture. And, the sediments are slightly gravelly sand, gravelly sand and gravelly muddy sand in facies. Metal contents in soils and sediments are of high near Hwasuneup and Hwasun coalfield. In peculiar, P, Co, Li, Ni, Zn and Pb exceed over crust mean contents. Physico-chemistry of above streams according to pH-Eh and Piper's diagrams indicates that the streams are, typically, assigned to natural river water. Water qualities of BOD, T-N and T-P in areas near Hwasun coalfield, Dongmyeon and Hwasuneup are polluted over V level. Enrichment factor(EF) representing metal condensation in P, Cu, Zn and Pb appear near Hwasun coalfield and Hwasuneup from the soil and sediment samples, in part. Additionally, river water in dry season is very high in BOD, T-N, $Na^+$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$. It is suggested that the relatively high metal contents in the stream be connected with above coalfield and urban areas.

  • The Pyeongan Supergroup can be divided into seven lithostratigraphic units (Moscovian to Early Triassic?) in the Samcheok coalfield and four lithostratigraphic units (Bashkirian to Artinskian) in the Yeongwol coalfield of South Korea. On the basis of fusulinid biostratigrapic data in the Yeongwol coalfield, the boundary between the Carboniferous and Permian strata of the Pyeongan Supergroup has been considered as unconformity since the Kasimovian and Gzhelian strata are missing. Protriticites and Triticites, which are the cosmopolitan index fusulinids indicating the Kasimovian and Gzhelian age, are not found from the uppermost part of the Geumcheon and Pangyo Formations. Recently some fusulinids such as Xenostaffella koreaensis, Hanostaffella magna, and Fusulina danyangensis found from the uppermost part of the Geumcheon and Pangyo Formations are recognized as the early Kasimovian-type fusulinids, although the upper Kasimovian- to Gzhelian-type fusulinids are still missing.

  • Coalfields in Korea have been grouped into thirteen based on mainly geographycal and geological structure, ten out of which have been developed. To classify the phisico-chemical characteristics of mine drainage from each coalfield and, if possible, to clarify the intrinsic reasons of them. Sampling of waters from 59 mines in eight coalfields has been carried out. Higher pH of drainage water from the mines of the Cungchung coalfield belong to the Beading system, Mesozoic era than those belong to the Pyungan system, Proterozoic era is due to the low content of sulfides of neighboring strata. The drainage from coal beds overlying limestone bed mostly show high pH. Waters from the Gangrung and Samchuck coalfields coal beds are located within black shale formation which contains a lot of sulfides showed mostly very high metal and S $O_{4}$$^{2-}$ concentrations.

  • We have a question about the changing possibility of orientation of discontinuities through the depth of under-ground. To know this, the data from Honam coalfield composed of shale, sandstone and coal and Suwon area which crops out mica schist, were analyzed the discontinuities measured by BIPS and Televiewer. In Honam coalfield the orientations of joints are changed at 30-40 m depth of underground and in Suwon area they are changed around 20 m depth. To compared the results from Honanam coalfield and Suwon area, there are different rock type and geologic structure. However, the attitude of the discontinuities are changing at 20-30 m depth of underground.

  • The anthracite coalfields of Korea are confined to the areas where sedimentary rocks of Permian and Jurassic are preserved. The Chungnam coalfield lies in the sedimentary rocks of Jurassic which belongs to the Daedong Supergroup (the Nampo group). For the property analysis of each coal seam interbeded in Daedong Supergroup, Seongju area is chosen and twelve coalseams are taken. Many standard tests have been established for optical analysis (maceral analysis, coalification degree measurement), chemical analysis (proximate, ultimate analysis) and physical analysis (ignition temperature, ash fusion temperature, hardgrove grindability index and X-ray diffraction). The Jurassic anthracite mainly consist of vitrinite and macrinite and the range of the reflectance is $R_{max}$ 5.0-6.5 which means metaanthracite rank. By the chemical composition analysis, it shows low H/C and high O/C value compare with international average value. By the physical analysis, it has very high ignition temperature ($531-584^{\circ}C$) and ash fusion temperature ($1510-1700^{\circ}C$) and very low combustion velocity (0.2-1.9 mg/min). The very wide range of the hardgrove grindability index (46-132) means that the grindability controlled mainly by the structural conditions of coal bearing strata.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the direction of slope sliding that occurred at the highland ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ district in the Samcheok coalfield, using geological and structural detail surveys. The study area is dominated by the Paleozoic Pyong-an Group, and sliding is concentrated in zones of alternating sandstone and shale beds in the Geumcheon and Jangsung Formations. Discontinuities in the area have a strike of NE-SW and dip at 30~$80^{\circ}$ to the NW and 40~$80^{\circ}$ to the SE. However, some have strikes of NW-SE. In slide area group 1 (P1 to P4), en echelon tension gashes were caused by shearing. The surface in the areas of group 2 (P5 to P7) and group 3 (P8 and P9) is marked by step-type tension cracks that formed due to extension. This phenomenon caused anticlockwise rotation of the sliding slope. Otherwise, the cutting of the road side through the eastern slope of the mountain contributed to surface sliding due to geographical equilibrium loss.

  • Several underground cavities were found during construction of a road tunnel in 600m length . The area belong to Whasoon coalfield where extensive ground subsidences have occurred. It is necessary to find other underground cavities which might be located just near the road tunnel for safety, The field surveys and laboratory tests were conducted such as surface geological survey(672m), surface reflection seismic exploration(399m), drilling test(3 NX holes), 9 laboratory tests for rocks, 3 boreholes televiewer tests, reflection seismic exploration in tunnel(2, 342m). To estimate the effects of underground cavities on the road tunnel, 3 geological section were analysed with FLAC-2D modeling. The effects of the ground reinforcement were also analysed.
