Treatment of a dyeing wastewater was carried out using polyamide RO-membranes. Before applying the wastewater to the membrane process, it was pretreated with various chemical coagulants such as alum, ferric chloride and HOC-100A. In order to see the effect of the pretreatment on the membrane separation process, the optimum conditions for the coagulation and sedimentation process were sought. As a result, by the pretreatment, for all the coagulants used, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and UV-absorbance of the wastewater were lowered by more than 70%. The pretreated wastewater was then applied to the membrane process. The effect of the coagulants used for the pretreatment on the membrane fouling was studied. From this study, it was found that the HOC-100A was the best out of the coagulants used for the removal of the materials that could cause membrane fouling.

Integrated process with coagulation and microfiltration as an advanced water treatment has been expanded its application in recent years due to its superb removal of particles and natural organic matter. In usual, effectiveness of coagulation sometimes determines performance of the whole system. Several new polymeric coagulants introduced to water utilities for better efficiency were studied in this paper. Three polymeric coagulants (i.e., PACl, PACs, and PAHCs) along with alum were evaluated for removal of natural organic matter, especially for reduction of trihalomethane formation potential, for which regulation has become stringent. Turbidity removal was closely related to pH variation showing the reduced turbidity removal by PACs due to the decreases in the pH of supernants at high doses. The four coagulants showed different organic matter removal during coagulation and affected the removal in microfiltration. For instance, DOC concentration was not reduced by microfiltration when PAHCs were used however 10 % of DOC removal was observed by microfiltration with alum coagulation. Coagulation pretreatment also impacted the THM removals, i.e., approximately 30 % of THMs and 13 % of DOC was removed by microfiltration only, but 40 to 67 % of THMs and 30 % of DOC was removed by the integrated process. Strategies on selection of coagulants are needed depending on characteristics of target pollutants in raw waters.
This study was performed to determine the optimum coagulant dosing for effective treatment of raw water in Chinyang lake. Removal rates of algae and characteristics of the water according to coagulants dosage were investigated by treatment with Microcystis aeruginosa, which is a kind of blue-green algae, to the raw water below 5NTU.
The coagulants dosage for maximum removal rate of algae were 30 mg/$\ell$ of Alum, 30 mg/$\ell$ of PAC and 10 mg/$\ell$ of PACS, respectively. The removal rate of algae in 30 mg/$\ell$ of PAC was highest as 85% compared with the other treatments. At the point of maximum removal rate of algae, the removal rates of turbidity were 34%, 66% and 22% in Alum, PAC and PACS, respectively. Residual Al was decreased depend upon decreasing turtidity in water by treatment of Alum or PAC, but decreased depend upon increasing turbidity in water by treatment of PACS. The removal rate of ${Mn}_{2+}$ in water was high in the order of Alum, PAC and PACS treatment. And ${Fe}_{2+}$ in water was not changed by treatemnt of these coagulants. Particle numbers distributions according to the particle size of suspended solids that were not precipitated at 8 min. of settling time after treatment of coagulants dosage for the maximum removal rate of algae were investigated. Most of the particle sizes were below 30 $\mu$m and particle numbers distributions below 10 $\mu$m were 64%, 56% and 66% by treatment of Alum, PAC and PACS, respectively. Zeta potential was in the range of -6.1~-9.7 mV at optimum coagulants dosage for algae removal.
This study evaluates the potential of various coagulants to enhance the efficiency of total phosphorus removal facilities in a sewage treatment plant. After analyzing the existing water quality conditions of the sewage treatment plant, the coagulant of poly aluminium chloride was experimentally applied to measure its effectiveness. In this process, the use of poly aluminium chloride and polymers in various ratios was explored to identify the optimal combination of coagulants. The experimental results showed that the a coagulants combination demonstrated higher treatment efficiency compared to exclusive use of large amounts of poly aluminium chloride methods. Particularly, the appropriate combination of poly aluminium chloride and polymers played a significant role. The optimal coagulant combination derived from the experiments was applied in a micro flotation method of real sewage treatment plant to evaluate its effectiveness. This study presents a new methodology that can contribute to enhancing the efficiency of sewage treatment processes and reducing environmental pollution. This research is expected to make an important contribution to improving to phosphorus remove efficiency of similar wastewater treatment plant and reducing the ecological impact from using coagulants in the future.
Increasing water consumption produced sludge problems of the water treatment plants. The objective of this study is to investigate aluminium coagulants recovery n acidic and alkaline conditions. Water treatment plant sludge produced in Pusan Metropolitan City were tested for the aluminium extraction process. Experiment samples were obtained in summer from water treatment plants of Deoksan and Myongjang. Aluminium coagulants used in these plants during the test period were polyaluminium chloride(PAC), polyaluminium sulfate organic(PSO), polyaluminium sulfate silicate(PASS). Aluminium contents of water treatment sludge were in the range of 7.2~10.9% of the total solids. The recovery percentages for aluminium and iron by acidic extraction method was evaluated to 88% and 42% respectively. Extracted mass variation for other materials such as iron, manganese, total organic carbon was observed during the extraction operation. Alkaline extraction produced more than two times amount of total organic carbon than that in the acidic extraction process.
In a water treatment process a complete and homogeneous dispersion of the coagulants in the raw water could be most important factor. This research was performed to evaluate coagulation performance of the in-line-orifice mixer which was recently introduced as a rapid mixing device. The test was to determine the actual coagulant dispersion distribution on the overall cross-section at a distance of 1.6~3D from the chemical injection point by measuring zeta potential. From the results of zeta potential test, it was shown that the coagulant dispersion within the in-line orifice mixer was occurred very unevenly. The results have confirmed that it is necessary to increase the velocity of coagulants injection or pressurized water rates, in order to reduce nonuniform distribution of chemicals.

m-Aramid dissolved in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc), were coagulated in different coagulants such as water, methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol. Various concentrations and temperatures of the coagulants were also used to evaluate dyeing properties of coagulated m-aramid films. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) was employed to investigate the surface morphology of m-aramid films. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was conducted in order to measure crystallinity change of mcaramid fibers and films. WAXD patterns showed that crystallinity of m-aramid fibers was reduced after film formation. In addition, color depth (K/S value) was measured and the results revealed that the film coagulated in water possessed fairly enhanced color depth.
For the proposal of Microcystis aeruginosa control technique by coagulants, removal effects of coagulants were carried out using isolated strain and collected water bloom of M. aeruginosa on Downstream of the Nakdong River. Both of purified and field-collected M. aeruginosa were entirely sedimented by the addition of the coagulant ceramic-zeolite type Co 100 (1.5 mg/$\ell$) within 24 hr, but Yellow loess (10 mg/$\ell$) was less effective for the removal of M. aeruginosa within 24hr. Thus it was concluded that Ceramic-Zeolite type Co 100 was the most effective coagulant.
This study was performed to determine the optimum coagulant dosing amount for effective treatment of raw water. The removal rate of turbidity and the variations of water qualities according to various dosage of coagulants such as Alum, PAC and PACS were investigated. The optimum coagulant dosing amount to make the lowest turbidity of water were 35mg/ι t of Alum, 30mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 30mg/ι of Alum, 25mg/ι of PAC and 10mg/ι of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. The removal rates of turbidity at 4 min. and 8 min. of settling time were 10 and 72% of Alum, 44 and 62% of PAC and 25 and 55% of PACS in case of 5 NTU, and 52 and 70% of Alum, 90 and 95% of PAC and 10 and 28% of PACS in case of 10 NTU, respectively. Judging from the settling capability of floc., the reaction time of floe. formation and removal efficiency of turbidity, PAC was evaluated as more effective coagulant than Alum and PACS. Also PAC was regarded as the most effective coagulant when the water supply was changed sharply and the fluctuation of the surface loading occured with wide and sharp in settling basin. pH and alkalinity of the water were decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. But pH and alkalinity were not decreased below 5.8 which is the standard for drinking water quality, and 10mg/ι which is the limit concentration of floc. breakage, respectively. Residual Al of the treated water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage in case of 5 and 10NTU of raw water turbidity. $KMnO_4$ consumption of the water was decreased with increasing coagulants dosage. The reduction rate of $KMnO_4$ consumption at the optimum coagulants dosage were 39% of Alum. 18% of PAC and 11% of PACS in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity, and 42% of Alum, 27% of PAC and 36% of PACS in case of 10 NTU of that, respectively. Any relationship was not found between the removal rate of turbidity and KMnO$_4$ consumption. TOC of the water was a bit decreased with increasing coagulants dosage up to 30mg/ι but not changed above 30mg/ι of coagulants dosage. The degree of TOC reduction was increased in the order of Alum, PAC and PACS treatment. Zeta potential of the colloidal floe. at the optimum coagulants dosage was in the range of -20~-15mV in case of 5 NTU of raw water turbidity and 0~0.5mV in case of 10 NTU of that. respectively. Although the kinds and dosages of coagulants were different, zeta potential range were fixed under the conditions of the best coagulation efficiency.

In this study, the solid-liquid separation characteristics of swine wastewater were investigated for the coagulation and dissolved air flotation (DAF). Coagulation characteristics were studied using jar-tester with the different coagulants and dosage amounts. DAF characteristics were also investigated in terms of the different flotation conditions with the raw swine wastewater, pH adjustment only, and adding coagulants. When the raw swine wastewater was coagulated with the only inorganic coagulants, the proper inorganic coagulants were founded as $FeCl_3$ > PAC > Alum orderly, and the optimal coagulant dosages were founded as $1,000mg/{\ell}$, $1,500mg/{\ell}$, $1,500mg/{\ell}$, respectively. As the raw swine wastewater was treated with the polymer coagulants, the only cationic polymer coagulant showed an effective coagulation and the optimal dosage of cationic coagulant was founded as $200mg/{\ell}$. When the different dosages of cationic polymer was added to each $500mg/{\ell}$ of the inorganic coagulants, the proper inorganic coagulants were founded as $FeCl_3$ > Alum > PAC orderly, and optimal cationic polymer dosages was founded as $25mg/{\ell}$, $25mg/{\ell}$, and $100mg/{\ell}$, respectively. Resulting from the raw swine wastewater experiments using DAF without coagulation, the proper operation conditions of DAF were set to 400% of recycling ratio, 4 atm in air dissolving tank, and under pH 3. But the raw swine wastewater was difficult to successfully operate DAF without pre-coagulation. While the DAF separation after pre-coagulation using inorganic coagulants was not accomplished due to the low intensity of the floc, DAF after pre-coagulation using both the inorganic and cationic polymer coagulants was accomplished very well. Optimal dosage of cationic polymer coagulant in case of $500mg/{\ell}$ Alum dosage was founded as $500mg/{\ell}$.
