Co-operative Education at University of the Pacific and Its Assessment for ABET Accreditation of Mechanical Engineering Program

  • Co-operative (Co-op) education is a college program that integrates classroom studies with paid, productive and real-life work experience. A mandatory Co-op program for the degree is introduced with a sample curriculum from the Mechanical Engineering program at University of the Pacific. The mandatory Co-op program requires a minimum of 7 months of work experience with the option of pursuing a 12 month program. Students also have the opportunity of participating in an Engineering Industry Fellowship (EIF) program or an International Engineering Co-op program (IECP). University of the Pacific has engineering programs in Bio-Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering Physics, and Mechanical Engineering. All the programs are ABET-accredited except the Bio-Engineering program, which is relatively new. The Co-op employers evaluate the Co-op students at the end of the working period before returning to school, and the students also provide an evaluation of their Co-op experience. Co-op employer evaluations of student work are used in ABET assessment methods developed by the Mechanical Engineering program at University of the Pacific.

공모전을 통한 공학 교육적 산학 협력 모델 (Co-work Program for Engineering Education through Competition)

  • 오늘날 산학 협력은 기업과 학계 상호간의 발전을 위해 매우 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 기업은 학교 연구 기관의 우수한 자원과 시설을 충분히 이용하여 새로운 제품 개발을 위한 기술을 얻을 수 있는 이점이 있고 학교는 기업 현장의 실제적인 문제에 대한 연구를 시행함으로써 이론적 연구의 실제적 적용이라는 성과를 가질 수가 있다. 그러나 대부분의 산학 협력모델은 주로 대학원 연구 기관과 기업 프로젝터 중심에서 이루어지고 주로 연구 프로젝터의 형태를 띠고 있거나 학생들의 취업을 위한, 현장실습, 기업 현장 인력 보수 교육이 주를 이루고 있다. 하지만 공학 교육의 큰 주체라고 할 수 있는 학부 단위의 교육 과정과는 다소 거리가 있는 것이 현실이며 그러한 학부 단위의 산학 협력 모델은 구축하기에 있어 프로그램의 기획, 재정, 기업의 무관심과 같은 여러 가지 제약이 따르는 것이 현실이다. 이에 본 논문은 기존의 산학 협력 혹은 기업 공모전과는 색다르게 전개 되고 있는 LG 전자 디지털 디스플레이 본부에서 시행 하는 디스플레이 아이디어 공모전을 소개하고 이를 통하여 기업과 학교의 효용성과 국내에서 새로운 산학 협력 모델을 제시 하고자 한다.

문제중심학습과 신업체 현장실습 연계를 통한 효과적인 PLM 교육에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Problem-Based Learning with Industry Co-operative Program for Effective PLM Education)

  • Generally, a PLM education program in university consists of lectures of theory, software lab and software development raining as an advanced subject. Most industries want more than these, such as practical problem solving capabilities, teamwork skills and engineering communications including human relationship, rhetoric, technical writing, presentation and etc. Problem-Based Learning is a problem-stimulated and student-centered teaming method, and an innovative education strategy for collaborative and self-directed learning by applying real world problems. Education paradigm changes from "teaching" to "learning" accomplished by team working, and students are encouraged to develop, present, explain and defense their ideas, suggestions or solutions of a problem, and the "cooperative teaming" proceeds spontaneously during team operations. Co-operative education program is an into-grated academic model and a structured educational program combining classroom learning with productive work experience in a field related to a student's academic or career goals. Based on the partnership between academic institutions and industries, students are engaged in real and productive "work" in the industry, in contrast with merely observing. In this paper, PBL with Co-op program is suggested as an effective approach for PLM education, and we made and operated a PBL-based education course with industry co-op program. The Co-op education in industry accompanied with the PBL course in university can improve practical problem solving capabilities of students, including modeling and management of P3R(Product, Process, resource and Plant) using commercial PLM software tools. By the result, we found this to be an effective strategy for helping students, professors and industries succeed in engineering education, especially PLM area.

Ergonomics Risk-Assessment Methods in Shipbuilding: Application of OWAS Considering Work load and Frequency for Risk Factor Analysis of WMSDs

  • Objective: The aim of this paper is to introduces Hyundai Heavy Industry's ergonomic risk assessment tool, H-OWAS, which is considering work load and frequency compared to the OWAS. Background: As prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders(WMSDs) in ship building industries has been much higher than that in other industries, most of the large scaled corporations have implemented their own prevention program since legislation on the prevention of WMSDs had introduced in 2003. Method: This paper introduces WMSDs prevention program, HEMP(HHI Ergonomics Management Program) which consists of risk assessment, improvement efforts of working environments, medical treatment and training/evaluation and describes how to operate the program. We also describe application of OWAS method considering work load and frequency for risk factor analysis(H-OWAS) and shows methodology for assessing the ergonomic risk factor. And comparison of the assessment results between OWAS and H-OWAS is carried out by statistical analysis. Result: There was statistically significant difference in the assessment results between OWAS and H-OWAS, and regression shows H-OWAS explains the borg's scale of perceived exertion more clearly than OWAS. Conclusion: H-OWAS has been proved more effective tool than OWAS to evaluate ergonomic risk factor under real working condition. Application: H-OWAS can be widely applied to the many other companies when implementing the ergonomics risk assessment.

What is the Role of Co-coordinator?: From Internship's Experience

  • Graduate Students in engineering at The University of Tokushima can take part in an educational program which is offered long-term internship opportunities (at a company or the government). Onishi, one of authors, took part in this educational program. She is studying environmental conservation at the university and is interested in environmental conservation activities led by residents. Striking a balance between environmental conservation and human economic activities is seen as important to society. However, the continuing in environmental conservation activities is difficult. Therefore, collaborative activities attract attention as a way of the continuing in environmental conservation activities. A person called "co-coordinator" is a key to make many people to participate in the sustainable collaboration activities. The main role of co-coordinator is connecting people who are interested in environmental conservation activities. The purpose of joining in environmental conservation activities is different from person to person depending on where they belong to or where they live. Onishi took part in the educational program to learn the techniques of adjusting the differing interests. She did her internship at environmental consulting company in Kamikatsu town, Tokushima prefecture. She participated in several environmental conservation activities and work experience as a coordinator. Through this experience, she learned not only the technique but also the difficulty of the work. This paper reports the results obtained from her experience.

시설재배 인력관리 프로그램 개발 (Development of Human Resource Management Program for Protected Horticulture)

  • 본 연구는 대규모 온실에서 작업관리와 인력관리 및 병해충 모니터링을 위한 HRM 프로그램을 개발하여 현장적용 시험을 수행하였다. 작업자의 전용 앱으로 작업지시와 현장의 작업내용 및 병해충 발생에 대한 정보를 입력할 수 있다. 관리자는 작업자의 작업내용별 노동시간과 작업속도, 작업품질을 평가하여 기록하고 이를 토대로 작업별 작업속도 기준을 설정할 수 있으며, 작업일정 수립이나 작업 투입인원의 결정이 용이하게 될 것이다. 따라서 고용인원을 효율적으로 운용하면서 작업수행을 용이하게 할 수 있으며, 작업자의 수급계획을 세울 때도 용이하게 사용될 수 있다. 시기별 작업분석을 통해 고용인원의 적정성을 평가할 수 있고 정규인력과 비정규 인력에 대한 수급비율을 조정할 수 있게 할 것이다. 작업자의 실시간 작업성과를 공개하며 작업자 간 경쟁을 유도하고 기준작업량 이하를 달성하는 작업자의 재교육 및 작업방법 개선을 통해 작업효율의 상승이 가능하다. 실증현장에서 분석해본 파프리카의 작업은 순치기, 수확 및 유인작업이 모든 작업시간의 91%이상을 차지하며, 수확작업보다 유인 및 순치기 작업시간이 두배정도 더 많은 것으로 나타났다. HRM 프로그램을 도입하기 전과 도입한 이후 가장 노동부하가 높은 시기인 수확과 유인 및 순치기 작업이 동시에 진행되는 시기를 비교했을 때 HRM 프로그램의 도입으로 37%의 작업량 향상을 가져왔다.

임상간호사의 직무 스트레스와 직무만족도에 대한 사회적 지지의 조절효과 (The Moderating Effects of Social Support between Job Stress and Job Satisfaction in Staff Nurses)

  • Purpose: This paper was attempted to focused on the analysis of job stress and job satisfaction according to the moderating effects of social support. Method: Data collected from 302 staff nurses in 2 general hospitals, with self-reporting questionnaires(Wolfgang's HPSI, modified Hagihara's social support, and MSQ). Descriptive statistics, Cronbach's alpha, Pearson correlation, ANOVA, and moderated regression analysis were used. Result: The subjects exhibited significantly highest level of 'the work and patients' conditions'. The perceived job stress was negatively correlated with supervisor and co-workers' support, and job satisfactions. Also supervisor and coworkers' support were positively correlated with job satisfactions. The main factor that affected the job satisfactions was 'work and patient conditions' and it was explained 35.5% out of the total variance of the job satisfactions with 'the work load and disturbing factor', 'supervisor support' and 'co-workers' support'. Supervisor support moderated the relationships between 'the patient care responsibilities and career development factor' and satisfaction. Conclusion: For developing the stress management program for hospital nurses, 'the work and patients' conditions', and the strategies of strengthening 'supervisor and co-workers' support' should be considered. In addition to, it may be considered to examine the effects of social support on the other criterion variables.

Influence of a Co-op Program on Participants' Academic Performance, Employment and Job Performance: Focusing on the Case of KOREATECH

  • KOREATECH has operated a Co-op program called 'Industry Professional Practice (IPP)' that allows students to work full-time in relevant industries for at least four months since 2012, and also developed a systematic performance evaluation model on the basis of Kirkpatrick's four-stage assessment model. This study aims to share KOREATECH's Levels 3 and 4 evaluation results which are clearly what practitioners and academic investigators of cooperative education want to know the most. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted for KOREATECH graduates and their superiors to examine influence of IPP experiences on employment and job performance. A total of 730 alumni who graduated within last 5 years participated in the survey, with 213 (29.2%) having IPP experiences, and 162 superiors rated their subordinates on seven performance criteria. The analysis results were mixed. On the one hand, employment rate of IPP participants was 89.7%, compared to 86.8% of alumni without field experiences. Participants of the IPP program were more satisfied with their salary and felt less unfair about their career and promotion opportunities than alumni without field experiences. On the other, superiors rated their subordinates without IPP experiences slightly more positively than IPP participants in terms of job performance. These contrasting results are judged to show strengths and weaknesses of the IPP program at the same time. The limitations of the study and future research directions are discussed at the last part.

ESTABLISHMENT OF A MAINTENANCE PROGRAM TO PREVENT LOSS OF OFFSITE POWER IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

  • Since the Fukushima accident in 2011, the importance of the electrical systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs) has been emphasized. The result has been that NPP regulators are enhancing their monitoring of loss of offsite power (LOOP) events. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) is reviewing the status and issues related to LOOPs, and is attempting to establish specific countermeasures to prevent LOOPs, because they can have severe consequences in the complicated maintenance schedule during an outage. A starting point for preventing LOOPs is the control of the loss of voltage (LOV)-initiating components. In order to reflect this in the risk assessment program, an LOV monitor is being developed for use during plant outages.

시각 프로그램을 위한 공동 개발 환경 (A Co-Development Environment for Visual Programs)

  • 시각 프로그램은 GUI(graphic user interface)모듈과 프로세스 로직(logic) 모들로 구성된다. 시각 프로그램의 빠른 개발을 위한 대부분의 RAD(rapid application development)툴 들은 큰 규모의 시각 프로그램 개발에 있어 다중 개발자 참여를 지원하지 않는다. 또한 기존의 공동 작업 도구는 우선권 및 병행성(concurrency) 제어에 있어 유연성이 부족한 단점이 있다. 본 논문은 시각 프로그램 개발에 있어 개발자간 즉각적인 의견 교환을 통한 분업 개발을 지원할 수 있는 공동 개발 환경을 제안하다. 제안하는 공동 개발 환경은 개발자간 다양한 개발 정보 교환과 의견 수렴을 위한 통신 창을 제공하며 공동 작업 공간에서의 개발 공유 객체에 대한 접근 우선권 및 병행성 제어를 위한 실시간 작업 제어기를 포함한다. 따라서 개발자들은 공동 개발 단계에서 충분하고 즉각적인 의견 수렴이 가능하고 공동 개발 과정에 대한 일관성과 신뢰성을 유지할 수 있다. 특히, 제안하는 공동 개발 환경은 대규모 시각 프로그램 개발에 있어 단일 개발자의 개발 부담을 줄이고 개발자의 개발 능력과 특성에 따라 분산 형태의 공동 개발 참여를 유도하여 관련 시각 프로그램 개발 속도와 효율을 높일 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
