The Environmental Dependence of the Mass-Size Relation for the Most Massive Galaxies

  • We study the environmental dependence of the mass-size relation for the most massive early type galaxies (M>$10^{10.7}M_{\odot}$) in the redshift range 0.10~0.15. The sizes of galaxies are measured by non-parametric method. We find that galaxies more massive than $10^{11.1}M_{\odot}$ show the environmental dependence in the mass-size relation. The galaxies with M>$10^{11.1}M_{\odot}$ located in the densest, cluster like environment have larger sizes and extended surface brightness profiles than their counterparts located in a low dense environment. We also find that the environmental dependence of the mass-size relation is more significant for the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) than non-BCGs. We use the semi analytic galaxy formation simulation based on the Millennium 1 Simulation for interpretation. Our result can be explained with a hierarchical growth of the most massive galaxies through dissipation-less merger in dense environment.

Analysis of nano-cluster formation in the PECVD process

  • In this paper, the ultra water-repellent thin films were prepared by RF PECVD. On the basis of surface morphology, chemical bonding states and plasma diagnostics, a formation model of clusters for the ultra water-repellent films was discussed from considerations of formation process and laser scattering results. Moreover, using laser scattering method, the relative change of quantity of nano-clusters or size of agglomerates could be confirmed. From the results, the films were deposited with nano-clusters and those of agglomerates, which formed in organosilicon plasma, and formation of agglomerates were depended on the deposition time.

  • This study was carried out to find the relationships between species pairs in the vegetation of eastern valley vegetation in Mt. Kumjung from September 20, 1991 to October 15, 1992. Eight sites were selected, each being divided into 5 quadrats, and thus 40 quad- rats were in total. To know the correlation among plant species the $x^2$ values were calculated by using the method of Yates, and the results were analyzed by cluster analysis according to Sneath and Sokal, and the following conclusions were obtained. The species examined can be subdivided into five groups according to the relationships. However, the relationships are not correlated with pH, water-content, maximum water holding capacity and mineral content of soil probably due to the environmental discontinuity.

The Use of AFLP Markers for Cultivar Identification in Hydrangea macrophylla

  • The principal morphological characters used for identification of hydrangea cultivars are often dependent on agroclimatic conditions. Furthermore, information on the selection or the genetic background of the hydrangea breeding is so rare that a molecular marker system for cultivar identification is needed. Amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were employed for fingerprinting Hydrangea macrophylla cultivars and candidate cultivars of H. macrophylla selected in Korea. One AFLP primer combination was sufficient to distinguish 17 H. macrophylla cultivars and 4 candidate cultivars. The profile of 19 loci that can minimize the error of amplification peak detection was constructed. AFLP markers were efficient for identification, estimation of genetic distances between cultivars, and cultivar discrimination. Based on the observed AFLP markers, genetic relationship was reconstructed by the UPGMA method. Seventeen H. macrophylla cultivars and H. macrophylla for. normalis formed a major cluster, and candidate cultivars selected in Korea formed another cluster.

  • Biclustering is a method to extract subsets of objects and features from a dataset which are characterized in some way. In contrast to traditional clustering algorithms which group objects similar in a whole feature set, biclustering methods find groups of objects which have similar values or patterns in some features. Both in clustering and biclustering, validating how much the result is informative or reliable is a very important task. Whereas validation methods of cluster solutions have been studied actively, there are only few measures to validate bicluster solutions. Furthermore, the existing validation methods of bicluster solutions have some critical problems to be used in general cases. In this paper, we review several well-known validation measures for cluster and bicluster solutions and discuss their limitations. Then, we propose several improved validation indices as modified versions of existing ones.

  • Many image display devices allow only a limited number of colors to be simultaneously displayed. in disphaying of natural color image using color palette, it is necessary to construct an optimal color palette and the optimal mapping of each pixed of the original image to a color from the palette. In this paper, we proposed the clustering algorithm using local region block centered one color cluster in the prequantized 3-D histogram. Cluster pairs which have the least distortion error are merged by considering distortion measure. The clustering process is continued until to obtain the desired number of colors. The same as the clustering process, original color value. The proposed algorithm incroporated with a spatial activity weighting value which is reflected sensitivity of HVS quantization errors in smoothing region. This method produces high quality display images and considerably reduces computation time.

Modified Passive Clustering Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Network

  • Energy efficiency is the most challenging issue in wireless sensor network to prolong the life time of the network, as the sensors has to be unattended. Cluster based communication can reduce the traffic on the network and gives the opportunity to other sensors for periodic sleep and thus save energy. Passive clustering (PC) can perform a significant role to minimize the network load as it is less computational and light weight. First declaration wins method of PC without any priority generates severe collision in the network and forms the clusters very dense with large amount of overlapping region. We have proposed several modifications for the existing passive clustering algorithm to prolong the life time of the network with better cluster formation.

  • A cluster made of $N_A,\;N_B\;and\;N_C$ atoms in the x, y and z directions respectively, is treated with Huckel method. We obtain the approximate expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of f.c.c., b.c.c. and h.c.p. clusters in closed forms. The maximum and minimum values of the band so obtained converge to those derived from the Bloch sum in the limit of infinite extension. For a small cluster (of $9{\times}9{\times}5$ atoms, for instance), LDOS from the analytical (approximate) solution manifests better agreement at the surface, than inside the bulk.

  • This study proposes an approach to unsupervisedly estimate the number of classes and the parameters of defining the classes in order to train the classifier. In the proposed method, the image is segmented using a spatial region growing based on hierarchical clustering, and fuzzy training is then employed to find the sample classes that well represent the ground truth. For cluster validation, this approach iteratively estimates the class-parameters in the fuzzy training for the sample classes and continuously computes the log-likelihood ratio of two consecutive class-numbers. The maximum ratio rule is applied to determine the optimal number of classes. The experimental results show that the new scheme proposed in this study could be used to select the regions with different characteristics existed on the scene of observed image as an alternative of field survey that is so expensive.

The Hydrogen Atom in Interstices of Pd Cluster

  • The electronic structure change caused by insertion of hydrogen into the interstices of Pd cluster is studied. Several properties such as energy, reduced overlap population (ROP), electon density (ED) and density of states (DOS) are calculated by Extended Huckel Method. Various types of clusters are considered. The same is performed on Ni and Pt and all the results are compared. The results show that the hydrogen atom in Pd is stabilized remarkably but its wave function is almost unperturbed. The fact is compatible with noticeable solubility of hydrogen in Pd but may not be a positive enough evidence to rationalize the claimed cold fusion phenomenon. It is also found that a remarkable charge transfer from Pd atom to hydrogen atom occurs.
