  • In order to statistically predict $O_3$ levels in Seoul, the study used the TMS (telemeted air monitoring system) data from the Department of Environment, which have monitored at 20 sites in 1989 and 1990. Each data in each site was characterized by 6 major criteria pollutants ($SO_2, TSP, CO, NO_2, THC, and O_3$) and 2 meteorological parameters, such as wind speed and wind direction. To select proper variables and to determine each pollutant's behavior, univariate statistical analyses were extensively studied in the beginning, and then various applied statistical techniques like cluster analysis, regression analysis, and expert system have been intensively examined. For the initial study of high level $O_3$ prediction, the raw data set in each site was separated into 2 group based on 60 ppb $O_3$ level. A hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to classify the group based on 60 ppb $O_3$ into small calsses. Each class in each site has its own pattern. Next, multiple regression for each class was repeatedly applied to determine an $O_3$ prediction submodel and to determine outliers in each class based on a certain level of standardized redisual. Thus, a prediction submodel for each homogeneous class could be obtained. The study was extended to model $O_3$ prediction for both on-time basis and 1-hr after basis. Finally, an expect system was used to build a unified classification rule based on examples of the homogenous classes for all of sites. Thus, a concept of high level $O_3$ prediction model was developed for one of $O_3$ alert systems.

  • The size distribution of airborne particulate matter (PM) and the concentrations of associated metallic elements were investigated in a busy urban region of a typical Korean industrial city. The PM concentrations measured during the spring, except for those in the size range of 1.1 to 2.1 ${\mu}m$, were slightly higher than the PM concentrations in the summer. Coarse particles contributed greatly to the variation in PM concentrations in the spring, while fine and submicron particles contributed largely to the variation in PM concentrations in the summer. The difference in size modes of the PM concentrations between spring and summer may be explained by the Asian dust effect and its accompanying wind direction and speed. Extremely high enrichment factors (EFs) values (6,971 to 60,966) for all of the size distributions in PM were identified for cadmium (Cd). High EFs values (12 to 907) were also identified for other heavy metals including Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Mn. Low EF values (0.29 to 8.61) were identified for Ca, K, Mg and Na. These results support the common hypothesis that most heavy metals in ambient PM have anthropogenic sources and most light metals have crustal sources. The results of principal components analyses and cluster analyses for heavy metals indicate that the principal sources of PM and metals were emissions from non-ferrous metal smelters, oil combustion, incinerators, vehicular traffic and road dust.

  • The status of corn genetic diversity in the uplands of Sarangani in Southern Philippines was investigated using 12 morphological traits subjected to multivariate statistical analyses. Information about traditional farming, post-harvest and storage practices were also elicited especially in relation to losses of traditional varieties, a phenomenon known as genetic erosion. While a handful of farmers still plant traditional corn varieties in the remotest areas, a significant number had already shifted to genetically modified corn. Furthermore, principal component analysis (PCA) reduced the 12 morphological traits into 5 principal components and identified ear length and ear weight to be major contributors to variation. Cluster Analysis, on the other hand, formed two distinct groups but failed to give information about intra-cluster variability among the 32 collected corn accessions. These results warrant that more informative morphological traits and that molecular markers will be used to obtain a better picture of genetic diversity in Sarangani upland corn. Molecular analysis is also needed to establish genetic identities of these cultivars and to detect gene introgression from GM varieties into the gene pool of farmers' corn varieties. These analyses are imperative for the conservation of traditional corn varieties before they disappear in the Sarangani uplands because of shifting priorities of upland farmers.

  • The morphotaxonomic characters of the genus Spirogyra were investigated to clarify their taxonomic category and the variation range among species on the basis of comparative morphological and numerical analyses by unialgal cultures and field samples collected from various freshwater habitats in Korea. 25 characters selected on morphological feature of the species were examined on 568 individuals for morphological comparisons and numerical analyses. Width, length and their length/width ratio of vegetative cell, shape of septum, chloroplast number, maximum width, width, length and their length/width ratio of female gametangium, length of male gametangium, size and shape of zygospore, and cell wall ornamentation of the spore showed a comparatively high vector in principal component analysis. In cluster analysis, 15 taxa analysed were divided into 8 major groups by the average taxonomic distance 1.0 level. Considering the morphology and numerical analysis, Spirogyra crassoidea could not be recognized as an independent species, therefore it was treated as a variety of S. ellipsospora. S. koreana (nom. invalidum), recognized as a new taxon, is under the investigation for its clear taxonomic category.

  • This study examined green consumption behavior according to the lifestyles of college students. The data were collected from 314 college students in Yeungnam region by a self-administered questionnaire. Frequencies, Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, cluster analysis, chi-square tests, one-way analysis of variance, Duncan's multiple range tests, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analyses were conducted by SPSS Windows V.18.0. According to the result of factor analysis, lifestyles were categorized into six factors: thrift-saving type, enthusiastic activity type, brand ostentation type, freedom-seeking type, material oriented type, and practice-seeking type. Cluster analysis showed respondents belonged to one of four groups: thrift practice group, indifference group, freedom-seeking group, and material ostentation group. The levels of green purchase behavior, green usage behavior and green disposal behavior of the respondents was not high. The thrift practice group showed higher levels of green purchase behavior, green usage behavior, and green disposal behavior. Finally, according to multiple regression analyses, environmental consciousness, knowledge about green consumption, lifestyle groups were the significant factors affecting green consumption behaviors. These results imply that green consumption education for college students should be activated to induce green life.

  • In sensor networks, it is very important to refresh communication keys of sensors in a periodic or on-demand manner. To perform a dynamic key management efficiently, sensor networks usually employ cluster architecture and each CH (Cluster Head) is responsible for key management within its cluster. In cluster-based sensor networks, CHs are likely to be targets of capture attacks, and capture of CHs threatens the survival of network significantly. In this paper, we propose a periodical key refreshment scheme which counteracts against capture of CHs. First, the proposed scheme reduces the threat caused by compromise of CHs by forcing each CH to manage a small number of sensors and changing CH role nodes periodically. Second, the proposed scheme flings attackers into confusion by involving other nodes in a key establishment between BS (Base Station) and a CH. Our numerical analyses showed that the proposed scheme is more secure than other schemes and robust against compromise of CHs.

  • The focus of this research was concerned with studying lower body type for Korean adult males. To understand the features of men's lower body required to organize an optimal sizing system for men's tight-fit slacks, information from the measuring values based on research on the physical standard of the nation(l997) were summarized; in addition, a factor analysis and a cluster analysis among multivariate analyses were performed. In terms of the need for appropriate fit in motorcycle wear, basic lower body parts applying to each item had to be taken into consideration to enhance sizing suitability. In the case of the length of the lower limbs, the inclusion of protectors plays an important role in affecting sizing. The factors related to the lower body were defined as follows: Factor 1 was the vertical dimension of the lower body, Factor 2 was the horizontal dimension of waist and hip, Factor 3 was the horizontal dimension of the lower limbs, Factor 4 was the length of hips, and Factor 5 was the ankle height. The lower body part was also divided into 3 clusters. Cluster 1 referred to the smallest stature and skeleton structure among the 3 body types. Cluster 2 represented the biggest stature, with a thin lower limbs body type. Cluster 3 represented a medium stature but with a large skeleton structure of lower limbs, a muscular type. In conclusion, Cluster 2 appeared most in the 20s age groups, but Cluster 3 appeared most in each of the 30s, 40's, and 50's age groups.

  • The gDNA isolated from Korean cuttle fish (Sepia esculenta Hoyle) from Sockcho (SOCKCHO), Seocheon (SEOCHEON), Incheon (INCHEON) and Vietnamese cuttle fish (VIETNAM), were amplified by PCR. Here, the seven selected primers (BION-A07, BION-A09, BION-A11, BION-A20, BION-B04, BION-B06, and BION-B14) were used to generate the unique shared loci to each population and shared loci by the four cuttle fish populations. In this study, the primer BION-A11 detected 112 shared loci by the four populations, major and/or minor fragments of sizes 300 bp, 400 bp, 700 bp and 1,000 bp, respectively, which were identical in all samples. The dendrogram obtained by the seven primers indicates five genetic clusters: cluster 1 (SOCKCHO 01-SOCKCHO 07), cluster 2 (SEOCHEON 08-SEOCHEON 10), cluster 3 (SEOCHEON 11-SEOCHEON 14), cluster 4 (INCHEON 15-INCHEON 21), and cluster 5 (VIETNAM 22-VIETNAM 28). The shortest genetic distance that displayed significant molecular differences was between individuals 25 and 26 from the Vietnamese cuttle fish (0.025), while the longest genetic distance among the twenty-eight cuttle fishes that displayed significant molecular differences was between individuals SOCKCHO no. 02 and SEOCHEON no. 12 (0.640). Individual of Seocheon and Incheon cuttle populations was somewhat closely related to that of Vietnamese cuttle fish population. Even though it could not be affirmed by a single case, such a result seems to be closely connected that the Korean peninsula is subject to climate changes by global warming. In conclusion, our PCR analyses revealed a significant genetic distance among the four cuttle fish populations.

  • Water resources in Jeju Island are dependent virtually entirely on groundwater. For groundwater resources, drought damage can cause environmental and economic losses because it progresses slowly and occurs for a long time in a large area. Therefore, this study quantitatively evaluated groundwater level fluctuations using principal component and cluster analyses for 42 monitoring wells in Jeju Island, and further identified the types of groundwater fluctuations caused by drought. As a result of principal component analysis for the monthly average groundwater level during 2005-2019 and the daily average groundwater level during the dry season, it was found that the first three principal components account for most of the variance 74.5-93.5% of the total data. In the cluster analysis using these three principal components, most of wells belong to Cluster 1, and seasonal characteristics have a significant impact on groundwater fluctuations. However, wells belonging to Cluster 2 with high factor loadings of components 2 and 3 affected by groundwater pumping, tide levels, and nearby surface water are mainly distributed on the west coast. Based on these results, it is expected that groundwater in the western area will be more vulnerable to saltwater intrusion and groundwater depletion caused by drought.

  • Regional frequency analysis is often used to overcome the limitation of point frequency analysis to estimate probability rainfall depths. However, point frequency analysis is still used in drought analyses. This study proposed a practical method to categorize the homogeneous regions of drought characteristics for the analyses of regional characteristics of droughts in Korea. Using rainfall data from 58 observation stations managed by the Korea Meteorological Administration, this study calculated drought attributes, i.e., mean drought indices for various durations using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and drought severities expressed by durations, depth, and intensity. The drought attributes provided useful information for categorizing stations into the hydrological homogeneous regions. This study introduced a cluster analysis with K-means techniques to group observation stations. The cluster analysis grouped observation stations into 6 regions in Korea. The data in the hydrological homogeneous region would be used in spatial analysis of drought characteristics and drought regional frequency analysis.
