Mi Fu, who was associated with Wen Tong, invented the Mijoem Technique (Dotting Technique) in landscape painting with his son Mi Youren. His landscapes, which referred to Dong Yuan's landscape technique and was inspired by the scenery of Jiang Nan, illustrate the mood of a cloud-covered foggy landscape by liberally applying dots with ink. 'Chunsansoesong' which is considered done by Mi Fu, clearly shows the virtues of ink painting's spreading, absorbing and omission techniques. This simply rendered landscape - whose mountains and hills are wrapped in both clouds and fog - displays exquisiteness by using small dots. In 'Chunsansoesong', the characteristics of Song painting: a 'vital energy', a 'poem within the painting', a 'beauty of margin', a 'beauty of one brush stroke, and a 'display of inner meanings' are implicatively expressed This is because it's simple but connotatively delineative. There is the characteristic of a 'poem within the painting' when analyzing the both fragmented and combined 'Chunsansoesong'. The margins support an imaginative space as the height of the mountains get higher which result in deepening both the width and depth of the landscape space. Furthermore, the soft thickness of ink, clouds, pine trees, and pavilion evoke delineative feelings and a desire to write a poem Every thing in 'Chunsansoesong' is enveloped in both clouds and fog regardless of its distance and this delivers boundless feelings of Oriental mystery and urges a desire for 'writing a poem'. The pavilion that faces the cloud and fog-bound mountains especially flames the poetic urge further by inducing viewers' poetic imaginations. As we reviewed above, 'Chunsansoesong's cloud and fog-covered landscape is a good example that clearly showcases the characteristics of a 'Poem within the Painting'.

Characteristics of snowfall and snow crystal habits have been investigated in the campaign of Experiment on Snow Storms At Yeongdong (ESSAY) using radiosonde soundings, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), and a digital camera with a magnifier for taking a photograph of snowfall crystals. The analysis period is 6 to 14 February 2014, when the accumulated snowfall amount is 192.8 cm with the longest snowfall duration of 9 days. The synoptic situations are similar to those of the previous studies such as the Low pressure system passing by the far South of the Korean peninsula along with the Siberian High extending to northern Japan, which eventually results in the northeasterly or easterly flows and the long-lasting snowfall episodes in the Yeongdong region. In general, the ice clouds tended to exist below around 2~3 km with the consistent easterly flows, and the winds shifted to northerly~northwesterly above the clouds layer. The snow crystal habits observed in the ESSAY campaign were mainly dendrite, consisting of 70% of the entire habits. The rimed habits were frequently captured when two-layered clouds were observed, probably through the process of freezing of super-cooled droplets on the ice particles. The homogeneous habit such as dendrite was shown in case of shallow clouds with its thickness of below 500 m whereas various habits were captured such as dendrites, rimed dendrites, aggregates of dendrites, plates, rimed plates, etc in the thick cloud with its thickness greater than 1.5 km. The dendrites appeared to be dominant in the condition of cloud top temperature specifically ranging $-12{\sim}-16^{\circ}C$. However, the association of snow crystal habits with temperature and super-saturation in the cloud could not be examined in the current study. Better understandings of characteristics of snow crystal habits would contribute to preventing breakdown accidents such as a greenhouse destruction and collapse of a temporary building due to heavy snowfall, and traffic accidents due to snow-slippery road condition, providing a higher-level weather information of snow quality for skiers participating in the winter sports, and estimating more accurate snowfall amount, location, and duration with the fallspeed of solid precipitation.
In this study, an algorithm to estimate Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) over small cities during nighttime has been developed by using the radiance from artificial light sources in small cities measured from Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor's Day/Night Band (DNB) aboard the Suomi-National Polar Partnership (Suomi-NPP) satellite. The algorithm is based on Beer's extinction law with the light sources from the artificial lights over small cities. AOT is retrieved for cloud-free pixels over individual cities, and cloud-screening was conducted by using the measurements from M-bands of VIIRS at infrared wavelengths. The retrieved nighttime AOT is compared with the aerosol products from MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Terra and Aqua satellites. As a result, the correlation coefficients over individual cities range from around 0.6 and 0.7 between the retrieved nighttime AOT and MODIS AOT with Root-Mean-Squared Difference (RMSD) ranged from 0.14 to 0.18. In addition, sensitivity tests were conducted for the factors affecting the nighttime AOT to estimate the range of uncertainty in the nighttime AOT retrievals. The results of this study indicate that it is promising to infer AOT using the DNB measaurements over small cities in Korea at night. After further development and refinement in the future, the developed retrieval algorithm is expected to produce nighttime aerosol information which is not operationally available over Korea.

The clear sky radiative forcings of aerosols were evaluated over East Asia. We first investigated optical characteristics of aerosol using sky radiation measurements. An algorithm of Nakajima et al. (1996) is used for retrieving aerosol parameters such as optical thickness, ${\AA}$ngstr$\"{O}$m exponent, single scattering albedo, and size distribution from sky-radiation measurements, which then can be used for examining spatial and temporal variations of aerosol. Obtaining aerosol radiative forcing at TOA and surface, a radiative transfer model is used with inputs of obtained aerosol parameters and GMS-5 satellite-based cloud optical properties. Results show that there is a good agreement of simulated downwelling radiative flux at the surface with observation within 10 W m$^{-2}$ rms errors under the clear sky condition. However, a relatively large difference up to 40 W m$^{-2}$ rms error is found under the cloudy sky condition. The computed aerosol radiative forcing at the surface shows downward flux changes ranging from -100 to -170 W m$^{-2}$ per unit aerosol optical thickness at 0.7 $\mu$m. The different values of aerosol radiative forcing among the stations is mainly due to the differences in single scattering albedo ($\omega$$_{0.7}$) and asymmetric parameter (g$_1$) related to the geographical and seasonal variations.
The single-scattering optical properties of ice crystals in cirrus clouds by the aircraft measurement data were investigated, and the radiative equilibrium temperatures and radiative fluxes were calculated and analyzed by radiative convective model with the variations of ice crystal habits and sizes in cirrus clouds. The homogeneous cloud is assumed to be in the layer 200~260 hPa with an ice crystal content of $10gm^{-2}$ for the flux calculation. The profiles of temperature, humidity, and ozone typical of mid-latitude summer are used. The surface albedo is assumed to be 0.2 for all spectral bands and the cosine of solar zenith angles is 0.5. The result of radiative equilibrium temperature at surface was less than surface temperature of the standard atmosphere data in case of smaller effective ice crystal size and larger optical thickness. The column, aggregation and plate in 6 ice crystal habits were the most effective in positive greenhouse effect and bullet-4 was the worst in it. At the surface, the maximum difference of equilibrium temperature by 6 kinds of ice crystal habits were about 3~15 K with 30 sample aircraft measurement data.
A parameterization for the scattering of longwave radiation by ice clouds has been developed based on spectral scattering property calculations with shapes and sizes of ice crystals. For this parameterization, the size distribution data by Fu (1996) and by Michell and Arnott (1994) are used. The shapes of ice crystal considered in this study are plate, solid column, hollow column, bullet-rosette, droxtal, aggregate, and spheroid. The properties of longwave scattering by ice crystals are presented as a function of the extinction coefficient, single-scattering albedo, and asymmetry factor. The heating rate and flux by the radiative parameterization model are calculated for wide range of ice crystal sizes, shapes, and optical thickness. The results are compared with the calculated results using a six-stream discrete ordinate scattering algorithm and Chou's method. The new method (with various habits and size distributions) provides a good simulation of the scattering properties and cooling rate in optically thin clouds (optical thickness < 5). Depending on the inclusion of scattering by ice clouds, the errors in the calculation of the cooling rates are significantly different.
In this study, a large-scale levee breach experiment from lateral overflow was conducted to verify the effect of the new reinforcement method applied to the levee's surface. The new method could prevent levee failure and minimize damage caused by overflow in rivers. The levee was designed at the height of 2.5 m, a length of 12 m, and a slope of 1:2. A new material mixed with biopolymer powder, water, weathered granite, and loess in an appropriate ratio was sprayed on the levee body's surface at a thickness of about 5 cm, and vegetation recruitment was also monitored. At the Andong River Experiment Center, a flow (4 ㎥/s) was introduced from the upstream of the A3 channel to induce the lateral overflow. The change of lateral overflow was measured using an acoustic doppler current profiler in the upstream and downstream. Additionally, cameras and drones were used to analyze the process of the levee breach. Also, a new method using 3D point cloud for calculating the surface loss rate of the levee over time was suggested to evaluate the performance of the levee reinforcement method. It was compared to existing method based on image analysis and the result was reasonable. The proposed 3D point cloud methodology could be a solution for evaluating the performance of levee reinforcement methods.
A vicarious calibration method was developed for the OSMI sensor calibration. Employing measured aerosol optical thickness by a sunphotometer and a sky radiometer and water leaving radiance by ship measurements as inputs, TOA (top of the atmosphere) radiance at each OSMI band was simulated in conjunction with a radiative transfer model (Rstar5b) by Nakajima and Tanaka (1988). As a case of examining the accuracy of this method, we simulated TOA radiance based on water leaving radiance measured at NASA/MOBY site and aerosol optical thickness estimated nearby at Lanai, and compared simulated results with SeaWiFS-estimated TOA radiances. The difference falls within about $\pm$5%, suggesting that OMSI sensor can be calibrated with the suggested accuracy. In order to apply this method for the OSMI sensor calibration, ground-based sun photometry and ship measurements were carried out off the east coast of Korean peninsula on May 31, 2000. Simulations of TOA radiance by using these measured data as input to the radiative transfer model show that there are substantial differences between simulated and OSMI-estimated radiances. Such a discrepancy appears to be mainly due to the cloud contamination because satellite image indicates optically thin clouds over the experimental area. Nevertheless results suggest that sensor calibration can be achieved within 5% uncertainty range if there are ground-based measurements of aerosol optical thickness, and water leaving radiances under clear-sky and optically thin atmospheric conditions.
Polarimetric measurements of the sky radiation by the PSR-I000, which is the multi-spectral polarimeter developed by the Opt Research Corporation and has the same wavelength regions (443nm, 490nm, 565nm, 670nm, 765nm and 865nm) as the ADEOSII/POLDER sensor, have been carried out at the ground station in Kanazawa city, Japan from March to May. First of all, the wavelength dependency of degrees of polarization is examined and it is shown that degrees of polarization measured under the hazy dust cloud are lower than those measured in the clear sky and decrease as the wavelength increases. Next, a new method for estimating optical properties, such as the optical thickness, the number size distribution and the refractive index, of the Asian dust and the ground reflectance from degrees of polarization measured by PSR-I000 is described. Finally, this method is applied to polarization data acquired on April 15,2002. As a result, it is shown that our estimation algorithm provides a good result.
Yellow sand event has been studied using SeaWiFS data in order to examine the aerosol optical characteristics in the Yellow Sea and their influences on the atmospheric correction for the ocean color remote sensing. Two SeaWiFS images of April 18 and April 25, 1998, representing Yellow Sand event and clear-sky case respectively, are selected for emphasizing the impact of high aerosol concentration on the ocean color remote sensing. It was shown that NASA's standard atmospheric correction algorithm treats yellow sand area as either too high radiance or cloud area, in which ocean color information is not generated. SeaWiFS aerosol optical thickness is compared with nearby ground-based sun photometer measurements and also is compared with radiative transfer simulation in conjunction with yellow sand model, examining the performance of NASA's atmospheric correction algorithm in case of the heavy dust event.
