  • In this paper, the performances of two noncoherent code tracking loops, i. e., traditional code tracking loop(TCTL) and modified code tracking loop(MCTL) are analyzed and compared in a CDMA mobile environment. Closed-form formulas for steady-state jitter variance are derived analytically for the two schemes as a function of the pulse shaping filter, timing offset, signal-to-interference ratio, and loop bandwidth. The design issues of the loop filter are also addressed with emphasis on the second-order tracking loop. Finally, the degradation of BER performance due to timing errors is examined in a CDMA reverse link for IMT-2000 designed by ETRI.

  • Membrane distillation process was used for desalination of hot (333 K) geothermal water, which was applied in the plant producing heating water. The investigated water contained 120 g salts/$dm^3$, mainly NaCl. The mineral composition was studied using an ion chromatography method. The obtained rejection of solutes was closed to 100%, but the small amounts of $NH_3$ also diffused through the membrane together with water vapour. However, the composition of obtained distillate allowed to use it as a makeup water in the heating water system. The geothermal water under study was concentrated from 120 to 286 g NaCl/$dm^3$. This increase in the solution concentration caused the permeate flux decline by a 10-20%. The geothermal water contained sulphates, which was subjected to two-fold concentration to achieve the concentration 2.4-2.6 g $SO{_4}{^{2-}}/dm^3$ and the sulphates then crystallized in the form of calcium sulphate. As a results, an intensive membranes scaling and the permeate flux decline was observed. The XRD analysis indicated that beside the gypsum also the NaCl crystallites were deposited on the membrane surfaces. The fresh geothermal water dissolved the mixed $CaSO_4$ and NaCl deposit from the membrane surface. This property can be utilized for self-cleaning of MD modules. Using a batch feeding of MD installation, the concentration of geothermal water was carried out over 800 h, without significant performance losses.

  • This paper proposes a DVS method which effectively reduces the power consumption of multimedia signal processor. Analytic derivations of effective range of its power saving factor are obtained with the assumption of a Gaussian distribution for the frame-based computational burden of the multimedia processor. A closed form equation of the power saving factor is derived in terms of the mean-standard deviation of the distribution. An MPEG-2 video decoder algorithm and AAC encoder algorithm are tested on ARM9 RISC processor for the experimental verification of the power saying of the proposed DVS approach. The experimental results with diverse MPEG-2 video and audio files show 50~30% power saving factor and show good agreement with those of the analytically derived values.

  • This paper models a symbol timing offset (STO) with respect to the guard period and the maximum access delay time for asynchronous multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) uplink systems over frequency-selective multipath fading channels. Analytical derivation shows that STO causes desired signal power degradation and generates self-interferences. This effect of the STO on the average bit error rate (BER) and the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is evaluated. The approximated BER and the SNR loss caused by STO are then obtained as closed-form expressions. The tightness between the analytical result and the simulated one is verified for the different STOs and SNRs. Furthermore, the derived analytical results are verified via Monte Carlo simulations.

  • In this paper, we investigate the tradeoff between security and reliability for a multi-hop protocol in cluster-based underlay cognitive radio networks. In the proposed protocol, a secondary source communicates with a secondary destination via the multi-hop relay method in the presence of a secondary eavesdropper. To enhance system performance under the joint impact of interference constraint required by multiple primary users and hardware impairments, the best relay node is selected at each hop to relay the source data to the destination. Moreover, the destination is equipped with multiple antennas and employs a selection combining (SC) technique to combine the received data. We derive closed-form expressions of the intercept probability (IP) for the eavesdropping links and the outage probability (OP) for the data links over a Rayleigh fading channel. Finally, the correction of our derivations is verified by Monte-Carlo simulations.

  • This work investigates two important performance metrics of underlay cooperative cognitive radio (CR) networks: Interference cumulative distribution function of licensed users and outage probability of unlicensed users. These metrics are thoroughly analyzed in realistic operating conditions such as imperfect fading channel information and strict transmit power constraint, which satisfies interference power constraint and maximum transmit power constraint, over Nakagami-m fading channels. Novel closed-form expressions are derived and subsequently validated extensively through comparisons with respective results from computer simulations. The proposed expressions are rather long but straightforward to handle both analytically and numerically since they are expressed in terms of well known built-in functions. In addition, the offered results provide the following technical insights: i) Channel information imperfection degrades considerably the performance of both unlicensed network in terms of OP and licensed network in terms of interference levels; ii) underlay cooperative CR networks experience the outage saturation phenomenon; iii) the probability that the interference power constraint is satisfied is relatively low and depends significantly on the corresponding fading severity conditions as well as the channel estimation quality; iv) there exists a critical performance trade-off between unlicensed and licensed networks.

  • In this paper, we investigate physical layer security in a cooperative cognitive radio networks (CRN) with a relay selection in the presence of a primary user and an eavesdropper. To protect the CRN from wiretapping by the eavesdropper, we propose employing an opportunistic relay selection scheme and multiple antennas at the destination that work based on the availability of channel state information at the receivers. Under these configurations, we derive an exact closed-form expression for the secrecy outage probability of the CRN, and also derive an asymptotic probability. Numerical results will be presented to verify the analysis.

  • The structural and leakage integrity of steam generator tubes should be sustained against all postulated loads even if a crack is present. During the past three decades, most of the efforts with respect to integrity evaluation of steam generator tubes have been focused on limit load solutions but, recently, the applicability of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics was examined cautiously due to its effectiveness. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a testing method to estimate fracture resistance characteristics of steam generator tubes with a through-wall crack. Due to limited thickness and diameter, inevitably, the steam generator tubes themselves were tested instead of standard specimen or alternative ones. Also, a series of three dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses were carried out to derive closed-form estimation equations with respect to J-integral and crack extension for direct current potential drop method. Since the effectiveness of $J_{IC}$ as well as J-R curves was proven through comparison with those of standard specimens taken from pipes, it is believed that the proposed scheme can be utilized as an efficient tool for integrity evaluation of cracked steam generator tubes.

  • Some closed-form expressions for circuit parameters are derived based on the equivalent circuits for the resonant MTM-TL(open and short). The lumped series resistance and shunt conductance, which explain radiation effects of a unit cell may be found by |$S_{11}$|(simulated or measured) with open and short terminations, respectively. The EM-simulated results, circuit-simulated results(obtained using extracted circuit parameters) and measurement results are shown to be in good agreement.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a Health Maintenance Program on physical functions and mental health of the elderly in nursing homes. Method: Sixty elderly(over 65 years old) in a randomized control study participated in a 16-week group-based intervention including functional exercises and health education. The participants were divided into 3 groups(Health Maintenance Program Group, Supportive Music Exercise Group, and Control Group) of 20 elderly each. Data was collected from Dec. 1st, 2005 to Mar, 30th, 2006. Physical function of lower body strength was assessed using a 30-second chair test, flexibility was assessed using a sit-and-reach test, and static balance was assessed by the ability to balance on one leg with open and closed eyes. Depression was assessed using the Korean Form of the Geriatric Depression Scale and self esteem was assessed using Rosenberg's Self Esteem Questionnaire. Data was analyzed by Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, and Repeated measure two factor analysis. Results: A Health Maintenance Program significantly increased muscle strength, flexibility and static balance, but depression and self-esteem scores were not significantly changed. Conclusion: Findings demonstrated that a Health Maintenance Program was more effective on physical function than mental health of the elderly in nursing homes.
