In this study, a car-door-controlled collision protection system using proximity sensor is proposed and its preliminary analysis and several preliminary experiments are conducted. The proposed system has three additional sub-components on the car-door that is, a pair of extra electro-magnetic actuator that are attached to the sliding bar of the open/close car-door four-bar mechanism, a proximity sensor that would be attached to the outside surface of the door which is likely to frequently contact to the object and a driving control circuit of the whole system. A proximity sensor is used to detect object close to the car-door, the driving control circuit provides actuating power command to the electro-magnets to generate braking force to stop the swing motion of the car-door. It is verified through kinematic analysis of the four-bar car-door open/close mechanism and through experiments that the magnitude of maximum electronic magnetic force could provide the braking force enough for this application. For this purpose, an electro-magnet driving circuit is implemented and tested. And also to increase the safety of the system a time delay circuit is implemented and tested.
A collision query determines the intersection between given objects, and is used in computer-aided design and manufacturing, animation and simulation systems, and physically-based modeling. Bounding volume hierarchies are one of the simplest and most widely used data structures for performing collision detection on complex models. In this paper, we present hierarchy of oriented rounded bounding volume for fast proximity queries. Designing hierarchies of new bounding volumes, we use to combine multiple bounding volume types in a single hierarchy. The new bounding volume corresponds to geometric shape composed of a core primitive shape grown outward by some offset such as the Minkowski sum of rectangular box and a sphere shape. In the experiment of parallel close proximity, a number of benchmarks to measure the performance of the new bounding box and compare to that of other bounding volumes.
In general, the numerous classical approaches available in the literature can anticipate the settlement of shallow foundations. As long as the footings are not in close proximity to other subsurface buildings, the findings achieved using these methods are legitimate and acceptable. However, due to increased urbanisation and land scarcity, footings are frequently built close together. As a result, these footings' settlement behaviour differs from those of isolated footings. A simpler approach for assessing the settlement behaviour of two square or rectangular footings placed in close proximity is presented in this work. A Parametric study has been carried out to examine the interference effect on the settlement of these footings placed in close vicinity on the surface of a homogeneous, isotropic and elastic soil medium. The interaction factors are examined by varying the different aspect ratios (L/B), clear spacing ratio (S/B) and intensity of loading on the right footing with respect to the left footing. Further, variation of the settlement ratio (δ/B) with respect to embedment depth ratio Df/B is examined. For square and rectangular footings, the interference settlement profile is also investigated by varying the clear spacing ratio (S/B) and the degree of loading. The results were compared to 3D finite element analysis and experimental data that were available.
Purpose - This study aims to find ways to have CSR efforts lead to a purchase decision. For this purpose, this research examines the influence of the perceived CSR proximity on the purchase intention and studies the moderating role of psychological distance. Research design, data, and methodology - A total of 185 undergraduate students from a university in Korea were recruited and were randomly assigned to the conditions of a 2 (CSR proximity: close vs. far) × 2 (temporal distance: near vs. distant) × 2 (information type: concrete vs. abstract) between-subjects design. ANOVA was conducted to test the hypotheses. Results - When consumers construe a purchase decision at a high level via the far psychological distance, a firm's CSR efforts are considered important for the purchase decision. Conversely, when consumers construe a purchase decision at a low level via the near psychological distance, a firm's CSR efforts are not considered for the purchase decision. Conclusions - This research demonstrates that people have a greater intention to purchase products from a firm whose CSR proximity is perceived as being close rather than far. Furthermore, this study shows that the psychological distance moderates the effect of CSR proximity on the purchase intention.

With the advance of robot capabilities and functionalities, construction robots assisting construction workers have been increasingly deployed on construction sites to improve safety, efficiency and productivity. For close-proximity human-robot collaboration in construction sites, robots need to be aware of the context, especially construction worker's behavior, in real-time to avoid collision with workers. To recognize human behavior, most previous studies obtained 3D human poses using a single camera or an RGB-depth (RGB-D) camera. However, single-camera detection has limitations such as occlusions, detection failure, and sensor malfunction, and an RGB-D camera may suffer from interference from lighting conditions and surface material. To address these issues, this study proposes a novel method of 3D human pose estimation by extracting 2D location of each joint from multiple images captured at the same time from different viewpoints, fusing each joint's 2D locations, and estimating the 3D joint location. For higher accuracy, the probabilistic representation is used to extract the 2D location of the joints, considering each joint location extracted from images as a noisy partial observation. Then, this study estimates the 3D human pose by fusing the probabilistic 2D joint locations to maximize the likelihood. The proposed method was evaluated in both simulation and laboratory settings, and the results demonstrated the accuracy of estimation and the feasibility in practice. This study contributes to ensuring human safety in close-proximity human-robot collaboration by providing a novel method of 3D human pose estimation.
A popular modern architectural form for tall buildings is two (or more) towers which are structurally linked through such features as a shared podium or sky-bridges. The fundamental features of the wind loading and the structural links of such buildings can be studied by measuring load components on the individual unlinked towers along with their correlations. This paper describes application of dual high frequency force balance (DHFFB) in a wind tunnel study of the base wind loading exerted on generic tall twin buildings in close proximity. Light models of two identical generic tall buildings of square plan were mounted on DHFFB and the base wind loading exerted on the buildings was simultaneously acquired. The effects of the relative positions of the buildings on the correlations and coherences involving loading components on each building and on the two buildings were investigated. For some relative positions, the effects of the building proximity on the wind loading were significant and the loading was markedly different from that exerted on single buildings. In addition, the correlations between the loadings on the two buildings were high. These effects have potential to significantly impact, for example, the modally-coupled resonant responses of the buildings to the aerodynamic excitations. The presented results were not meant to be recommended for direct application in wind resistant design of tall twin buildings. They were intended to show that wind loading on tall buildings in close proximity is significantly different from that on single buildings and that it can be conveniently mapped using DHFFB.

A numerical simulation of wake behavior behind three-dimensional wings in ground effect is done using an indirect boundary element method (Panel Method). An integral equation is obtained by applying Green's 2nd Identity on all surfaces of the flow domain. The AIC is constructed by imposing the no penetration condition on solid surfaces, and the Kutta at the wing's trailing edge. The ground effect is included using an image method. At each time step, a row of wake panels from wings' trailing edge are convected downstream following the force-free condition. The roll-up of wake vortices behind wings in close proximity is simulated.
The unsteady turbulent flow characteristics of NACA4406 airfoil at close proximity to the pound are numerically investigated, especially focused on the noise generation mechanism near the blunt trailing edge. The unsteady two-dimensional compressible Wavier-Stokes equations with a Spalart-Allmaras turbulence closure model are solved by the 6th-order compact scheme and the 4th-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The computation shows a noise generation by a feedback mechanism at the blunt tailing edge, where the acoustic-fluidic coupling occurs between the wall-reflected sound waves and the periodically disturbed turbulent shear layer.
The genets of Suillus granulatus in a Pinus strobus stand ($13m{\times}60m$) were identified using random amplified polymorphic DNA molecular markers and the DNA of mushrooms that fruited for two years, and variations in genet size and distribution were analyzed. From a total of 116 mushrooms, 73 genets were identified and were grouped into three locations. The genets of mushrooms in close proximity differed from each other. The genet sizes varied at any of the three locations. The lengths of the identified genets in the pine stand ranged from 0.09 to 2.90 m. The average number of mushrooms per genet was 1.2 to 2.3, and the percentage of genets that were represented by a single mushroom was 44% to 94%. This variation in the genets of mushrooms in close proximity suggests that the ectomycorrhizal mycelial bodies of S. granulatus propagated sexually by fusing haploid spores derived from the mushrooms gills with below-ground mycelia. Therefore, it is necessary further to investigate the formation of new genets through spores in ectomycorrhizal fungal colonies.
PURPOSES: This study evaluated a measuring technique for tire-pavement interaction noise that uses a noble close proximity (NCPX) method as well as for noise level measured inside of a car (e.g., Inside Noise Level) in term of rumble strips constructed at a tall gate. METHODS: According to the measurements of NCPX and inside noise level (INL), 1/3 octave band frequency analysis and overall noise level calculation were conducted in order to evaluate noise levels of NCPX and INL, depending on types of rumble strips. RESULTS: The tested sections of general concrete pavement surface and two different types of rumble strips were evaluated, using 1/3 octave band frequency analysis and overall noise level. From the analyzed results, it can be concluded that rumble strips generate a relatively huge noise levels when compared to the concrete pavement surface. CONCLUSIONS: Noting that above 3 dBA different noise levels can let drivers know that they are getting close to toll gate; therefore, they should apply their brakes. Thus, the noise levels of rumble strips are required to be reduced, based on considering the neighbors living near toll gates.
