Variability of Surface Chlorophyll Concentration in the Northwest Pacific Ocean (북서태평양의 표층엽록소 변동성)

  • We collected information on seasonal and interannual variability of surface chlorophyll a concentration between 1997-2007 from the Northwest Pacific Ocean. Satellite data were used to acquire chlorophyll a and sea surface temperature from six regions: East Sea/Ulleung Basin, East China Sea, Philippin Sea, Warm Pool region, Warm Pool North region, and Warm Pool East region. Mixed layer depth (MLD) was calculated from temperature profiles of ARGO floats data in four of the six regions during 2002-2007. In the East Sea/Ulleung Basin, seasonal variability of chlorophyll a concentration was attributed to seasonal change of MLD, while there was no significant relationship between chlorophyll a concentration and MLD in the Warm Pool region. Interannual anomaly in sea surface temperature were similar among the East Sea, East China Sea, Philippin Sea, and Warm Pool North region. The anomaly pattern was reversed in the Warm Pool East region. However, the anomaly pattern in the Warm Pool region was intermediate of the two patterns. In relation to chlorophyll a, there was a reversed interannual anomaly pattern between Warm Pool North and Warm Pool East, while the anomaly pattern in the Warm Pool region was similar to that of Warm Pool North except for the El $Ni\tilde{n}o$ years (1997/1998, 2002/2003, 2006/2007). However, there was no distinct relationship among other seas. Interestingly, in the Warm Pool and Warm Pool East regions, sea surface temperature showed a pronounced inverse pattern with chlorophyll a. This indicates a strong interrelationship among sea surface temperature-MLD-chlorophyll a in the regions. In the Warm Pool and Warm Pool East, zonal distribution of chlorophyll a concentration within the past 10 years has shown a good relationship with sea surface temperature which reflects ENSO variability.

Seasonal Characteristics of Todarodes pacificus Paralarval Distribution in the Northern East China Sea (북부 동중국해 살오징어(Todarodes pacificus) 유생분포의 계절특성)

  • We conducted eight surveys in the northern East China Sea (ECS) in winter (February - April), summer (July), and autumn (October) 2004-2009, to investigate the seasonal distribution of T. pacificus. A total of 482 paralarvae, ranging in mantle length (ML) from 1.0 - 17.0 mm, were collected at 73 out of 181 stations. There were higher numbers of paralarvae during the winter and summer months than in the autumn. There was significant seasonal variation in the paralarval mantle lengths; mantle lengths were longer in winter (April) than in summer (July). The position of oceanic fronts in the study area played an important role in restricting paralarval distribution along the inshore edge of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC). When the TWC expanded to western Jeju Island in winter and autumn, the paralarval distribution range extended to include western Jeju Island. However, when the TWC was located southeast of Jeju Island in the summer, paralarvae were distributed along the frontal zone off southeast Jeju Island. Sites at which paralarval mantle length was <2.0 mm ML indicated that the spawning ground were likely to be within the northern ECS in winter and summer, but north of the study area in autumn.

Change in the Fishing Grounds and the Relationship between the Abundance of the Common Squid Todarodes pacificus and the Distribution of Zooplankton in the East Sea (한국 동해의 살오징어(Todarodes pacificus) 어장변화 및 풍도와 동물플랑크톤 분포와의 관계)

  • The common squid $Todarodes$ $pacificus$ is a dominant species in Korean waters, where it is captured preponderantly by the angling fishery. The spawning and nursery grounds of $T.$ $pacificus$ extend from the southern East Sea to the northern East China Sea. Consequently, the environmental conditions in this area during the spawning and nursery seasons might affect the abundance of $T.$ $pacificus$. This study, analyzed the relationship between the distribution of zooplankton and the abundance of $T.$ $pacificus$ and variation in the squid angling fishing grounds in Korean waters. There was a positive relationship between the fluctuations in zooplankton and the catch per unit effort (CPUE; $kg{\cdot}day^{-1}{\cdot}person^{-1}$) of the angling fishery in the East Sea of Korea. The main fishing season is from July to December and the CPUE was closely related to the zooplankton biomass in April in the East Sea. Recently, the center of the squid jigging ground has moved drastically from the area around Ulleung Island to the northern East Sea. We postulate that the fishing grounds of the squid angling fishery will move farther north with climate change.

Effects of Meteorological and Oceanographic Properties on Variability of Laver Production at Nakdong River Estuary, South Coast of Korea (낙동강 하구 해양환경 및 기상 요인이 김P(orphyra yezoensis) 생산량 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • To understand the effects of marine environmental and meteorological parameters on laver Porphyra yezoensis production at Nakdong River Estuary, we analyzed marine environmental (water temperature, salinity, nutrients, etc.) and meteorological properties (air temperature, wind speed, precipitation, sunshine hours) with yearly and monthly variations in laver production over 10 years (2003-2013). Air and water temperature, wind speed, sunshine hours and precipitation were major factors affecting yearly variability in laver production at the Nakdong River Estuary. Lower air and water temperatures together with higher levels of nutrients and sunshine and stronger wind speeds resulted in higher laver harvests. Salinity and nitrogen did not show clear correlations with laver production, mainly due to the plentiful supply of nitrogen from river discharge and the low frequency of environmental measurements, which resulted in low statistical confidence. However, environmental factors affecting monthly laver production were related to the life cycle (culturing stage) of Porphyra yezoensis and were somewhat different from factors affecting annual laver production. In November, a young laver needs lower water temperatures for rapid growth, while a mature laver needs much stronger winds and more sunshine, as well as lower temperatures for massive production and effective photosynthesis, mostly in December and January. However, in spring (March), more stable environments with fewer fluctuations in air temperature are needed to sustain the production of newly deployed culture-nets ($2^{nd}$ time culture). These results indicate that rapid changes in weather and marine environments caused by global climate change will negatively affect laver production and, thus, to sustain the yield of and predict future variability in laver production at the Nakdong River estuary, environmental variation around laver culturing farms needs to be monitored with high resolution in space and time.

A Way for Establishing Tsunami Scenario Data Base (지진해일 시나리오 DB 구축방안)

  • Focal mechanism of the real and imaginary faults in the western coast of Japan has been assumed by examining the previous studies on the seismicity, seismic gap, fault behaviors, seismic zoning, and faults. In the area of no seismic information, the focal mechanism has been assumed to have the maximum influence on the tsunami height in the eastern coast of Korea. The tsunami height in a particular point of the eastern coast of Korea can vary up to 7 orders with the variation of the strike of the fault in a particular source point of the western coast of Japan with constant magnitude. Tsunami scenario DB including tile arrival times and tsunami heights has been constructing by using the assumed focal mechanism of the western coast of Japan. Tsunami warning system will be reinforced by using this tsunami scenario DB near future.

Analysis of Radiative Characteristics at Urban Area by Observation in Summer Season (하절기 도시의 지역별 장.단파복사 특성 분석과 해석)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristic of radiation environment in the urban and rural through the field observation in the summer. The radiation balance was compared through the measurement of the shortwave radiation and long-wave radiation in the urban, sub-urban, and rural. The following conclusion could be obtained from this research. (1)In the results of observation including the rain-day, it was found that the short wave radiance in the urban is lower about 10% than the rural. (2)The upper part of atmosphere layers in the urban are aabsorb much short wave radiation energies compared with the rural relatively. It can increase the temperature of the upper part of atmosphere layers and the emittance of long wave radiation. (3)The ratio of the downward short wave radiation to the downward long wave radiation was 1.24 for the urban, 1.28 for sub-urban and 1.35 for rural. It can be estimated that the atmosphere condition of the rural is better than that of other areas. (4)The net radiation of the rural was lower that of the urban. It was found that the energy in and outflow of the rural is easier than that of the urban. (5)The temperature variation for the long-wave radiation change of the rural showed more sensitive than that of the urban. It was came from the radiation characteristics of the surrounding environment and can be used as the important index to evaluate the thermal environment characteristic of urban.

Application of SWAT-K Model for the Evaluation of Hydrological Variation of Chungjudam Watershed Considering Future Climate, Vegetation and Land Use Changes (미래 기후 식생 토지이용 변화를 고려한 충주댐 기후, 식생, 유역의 수문변동 파악을 위한 SWAT-K 모형의 적용)

  • 본 연구는 충주댐 유역을 대상으로 미래의 기후변화, 그에 따른 식생상태, 그리고 미래의 토지이용 변화를 고려한 상태에서 SWAT-K 모형에 의한 수문순환인자들의 변화가 댐의 유입량에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 한다. SWAT 모형의 검보정은 6년간($2000{\sim}2006$, 2001년 제외)의 댐유입량 자료를 이용하여 실시하였으며, Nash_Sutcliffe 모형효율은 $0.52{\sim}0.88$의 범위로 검보정되었다. 기후변화 시나리오는 IPCC에서 제공하고 있는 GCM들 중에서 CCCma CGCM2의 A2, B2 시나리오를 이용하였으며, 댐유역의 기후변화를 모의하기 위하여 과거 30년간($1977{\sim}2006$)의 기상자료 통계정보를 기준으로 Change Factor Downscaling 기법을 적용하여 2030년, 2060년, 2090년 전후의 각 30년간의 미래 정보를 재생산하였다. 미래의 식생정보는 7년($2000{\sim}2006$)간의 MODIS 위성 영상에 의한 엽면적 지수를 월단위로 구축하여 엽면적 지수와 평균기온간의 상관회귀식을 도출하여 미래 기후변화에 따른 식생의 활력도를 예측하였다. 미래의 토지이용 변화는 CA-MArkov 기법을 개선, 적용하여 총 9개의 토지이용 항목에 대하여 각 항목별 예측을 실시하였다. 2000년의 기상자료 및 댐유입량을 기준으로 이상의 미래기후, 식생, 토지이용 에측 정보를 적용하여 미래의 댐유입량을 모의한 결과를 분석하였다. 그 결과 강수량 및 온도의 변동이 가장 크게 영향을 주어 유입량의 변화가 모의되었으며, 이에 따른 수문인자의 변동은 2000년 기준으로 증발산량, 토양수분의 변동을 분석하였다. 미래의 수문순환에 가장 큰 영향을 주는 수문인자는 토양수분으로 나타나, 미래에는 산림지역 및 토지이용 개발에 따른 토양수분의 함양량 유지를 위한 유역관리가 중요한 요인이 될 것으로 나타났다.

  • Recently, the ever-increasing use of fossil fuels for rapid industrial development and population significantly caused an environment pollution and global warming such as climate change. So research and development of sustainable and eco-friendly energy have been performed. Especially the interest in nuclear fusion fuel was significantly increased from the developed countries. The system of fusion energy production was tritium separation, storage and delivery, and purification. Republic of Korea is in charge of Storage and Delivery System (SDS) in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). Welding part of the SDS bottles for storing the tritium is known to be susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement. In this study, conducted a study for the relaxation of the stability and hydrogen embrittlement of the weld area. The hydrogen heat treatment was processed through the Pressure-Composition-Temperature (PCT) device according to the time variation. Also mechanical properties such as impact test and hardness test according to using the alkaline cleaning liquid for hydrogen embrittlement relief and the fracture was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the mechanical properties evaluation.

  • Nowdays, fossil fuels have been used as an important resource in development of industry. But it is limited and caused climate change such as pollution and global warming. So nuclear fusion research is being issued with tritium to develop eco-friendly and sustainable energy. Republic of Korea is in charge of Storage and Delivery System (SDS) in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), weld present in the SDS bottles are easily exposed to the hydrogen embrittlement of special characteristics of the hydrogen in hydrogen atmosphere, When the hydrogen embrittlement is rapidly progresses, the cracking is generated in the weld zone. Due to this cracking, the risk of leakage of tritium into the atmosphere occurs. In this study, hydrogen heat treatment was processed through the Pressure-Composition-Temperature (PCT) device according to the time variation. Also mechanical properties such as rupture strength test, three point bend test and hardness test in accordance with the respective time have been conducted and the fracture was observed by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) after the mechanical properties evaluation.

The Characteristics of Coal Gasification using Microwave Plasma (마이크로웨이브 플라즈마를 이용한 석탄가스화 특성 연구)

  • The investigation of clean and environment-friendly coal utilization technology is actively progressed due to high oil price and serious climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, the plasma gasification was performed using a 6kW microwave plasma unit under various reaction conditions: the particle sizes of coal ($45{\mu}m-150{\mu}m$), $O_2$/fuel ratio (0 - 1.3), and steam/fuel ratio (0 - 1.5). The $H_2$ composition decreases with decreasing coal particle size. With increasing $O_2$/fuel ratio, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas decreased while the $CO_2$ composition increased. As the steam/fuel ratio increased from 0 to 1.5, the $H_2$ composition in the syngas increased while the $CO_2$ composition decreased. From the results, it was proven that the variation of syngas composition greatly affected by $O_2$/fuel ratio than steam/fuel ratio. The $H_2$ composition in the syngas, carbon conversion, and cold gas efficiency increased with increasing plasma power.
