  • The main purpose of this study is to suggest and evaluate an operational method for assessing the potential impact of climate change on hydrologic components and water resources of regional scale river basins. The method, which uses large scale climate change information provided by a state of the art general circulation model(GCM) comprises a statistical downscaling approach and a spatially distributed hydrological model applied to a river basin located in Korea. First, we construct global climate change scenarios using the YONU GCM control run and transient experiments, then transform the YONU GCM grid-box predictions with coarse resolution of climate change into the site-specific values by statistical downscaling techniques. The values are used to modify the parameters of the stochastic weather generator model for the simulation of the site-specific daily weather time series. The weather series fed into a semi-distributed hydrological model called SLURP to simulate the streamflows associated with other water resources for the condition of $2CO_2$. This approach is applied to the Yongdam dam basin in southern part of Korea. The results show that under the condition of $2CO_2$, about $7.6\% of annual mean streamflow is reduced when it is compared with the observed one. And while Seasonal streamflows in the winter and autumn are increased, a streamflow in the summer is decreased. However, the seasonality of the simulated series is similar to the observed pattern and the analysis of the duration cure shows the mean of averaged low flow is increased while the averaged wet and normal flow are decreased for the climate change.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the effectiveness of a green roof by simple mathematical model. The developed model simulates a green roof during the summer. The results explain and support the claims in the literature such that effectiveness of a green roof depends on the climate condition, and on the insulation condition of the roof. If insolation can not be reduced more than 60% by the shading effects of a green roof, more active measures than green roof seem necessary. The analysis tools like presented in the paper is necessary especially to consider climate effect, to design, and also to test green roof.

  • When trains run over a snow-covered track at high speed, the snow accereted under car bodies may drop during train running. The dropped snow/ice lumps scatter the ballast on the track damaging the car body and the environment along the track in snowy regions. In this study, the snow-fall condition in winter around the Seoul-Busan high-speed line has been investigated to yield the countermeasure for the high-speed line. The climate near Japanese and French high-speed line as well as the relationship between the climate and countermeasure has also been investigated and the direction of countermeasure for Seoul-Busan high-speed line has been deduced. Consequently, the amount and frequency of snow-fall near Seoul-Busan high-speed line is less than that of Japan and France, so the speed restriction could be the fundamental countermeasure for Seoul-Busan high-speed line, and additional measure on rolling stock and infrastructure should be followed.

  • Korean Traditional houses has been evolved and developed in many years, adopting the natural environment to control exterior conditions. These control method are various passive system of using natural materials, considering micro climate, building lay out, and these system are more natural and ecological to make the comfortable indoor climate than active systems of the present houses. This study aims to analyzed control performance of outdoor environment of five Korean traditional houses during the summer and winter. These houses are varied with lay out and floor plan to reflect the way of control for environmental condition, surveyed the reverberation time and sound level difference between rooms of the main living room and other main floored room, master room and kitchen. Especially air temperature and humidity have been measured simultaneously in each rooms to compare with outdoor condition. As a result, the variation of air temperature and humidity of most rooms are considerably static while condition of outdoors are much varied, it is showed that indoor climate has been controled with traditional soiled walls.

  • BACKGROUND: Biochar is a solid material converted from agricultural biomass such as crop residues and pruning branch through pyrolysis under limited oxygen supply. Biochar consists of non-degradable carbon (C) double bonds and aromatic ring that are not readily broken down by microbial degradation in the soils. Due to the recalcitrancy of C in biochar, biochar application to the soils is of help in enhancing soil carbon sequestration in arable lands that might be a strategy of agricultural sector to mitigate climate change. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were collected from studies on the effect of biochar application on soil C content conducted in East Asian countries including China, Japan and Korea under different experimental conditions (incubation, column, pot, and field). The magnitude of soil C storage was positively correlated (p < 0.001) with biochar application rate under field conditions, reflecting accumulation of recalcitrant black C in the biochar. However, The changes in soil C contents per C input from biochar (% per t/ha) were 6.80 in field condition, and 12.58 in laboratory condition. The magnitude of increment of soil C was lower in field than in laboratory conditions due to potential loss of C through weathering of biochar under field conditions. Biochar production condition also affected soil C increment; more C increment was found with biochar produced at a high temperature (over 450℃). CONCLUSION: This review suggests that biochar application is a potential measures of C sequestration in agricultural soils. However, as the increment of soil C biochar was affected by biochar types, further studies are necessary to find better biochar types for enhanced soil C storage.

  • According to statistical data the past ten years, cultivation area and yield of radish are steadily decreasing. This phenomenon cause instability of radish's supply due to meteorological chage, even if radish's yield per unit area is increasing by cultivation technological development. These problems raise radish's price. So, we conducted study on meteorological factors for accuracy improvement of radish yield estimation. Panel analysis was used with two-way effect model considering group effect and time effect. As the result, we show that mixed effects model (fixed effect: group, random effects: time) was statistical significance. According to the model, a rise of one degree in the average air temperature on August will decrease radish's yield per unit area by $428kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ and that in the average air temperature on October will increase radish's yield per unit area by $438kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$. The reason is that radish's growth will be easily influenced by meteorological condition of a high temperature on August and by meteorological condition of a low temperature on Octoboer.

  • The relationship between climate changes and transportation could be separated by two approaches. One of methods was to find how climate changes affected transportation, and the other way was how transportation affected climate changes. In this study, we reported from the former standpoint, how climate changes affected transportation fields. When there is a lot of snowfall in Seoul, it starts ripple effect through the travel patterns. They can be explained by travel time and operating cost. The travel costs were calculated in this paper for analysing the effect of disbenefit by climate changes. Snow Melting System was also studied for relieving negative influences under the unpredictable weather condition. As a result, the system was effective for minimizing disbenefit by climate changes.

  • Fisheries are subject to unexpected weather condition. While some change of it may be positive for some fisheries, the current state suggests that the effects will be undesirable for many fisheries. The aim of this study is to assess the vulnerability to climate change in 11 regional fisheries of Korea using the framework of IPCC. The vulnerability assessment depends upon the interrelation of three key elements; exposure, sensitivity and adaptive capacity, which were derived from Analytical Hierarchy Process method in this study. These elements would contribute to comprehend relative importance at the regional characteristics of fisheries. We compared the vulnerability index of 11 regional fisheries so as to look for strategies and adaptation methods to the impacts of potential climate change. Jeoun-Nam, Kyeong-Nam, and Jeju are identified as the most vulnerable provinces to climate change on their fisheries because they have high level of sensitivity to predicted climate change and relatively low adaptive capacity. The relatively low vulnerability of Ulsan, Gyeonggi reflects high financial independence, well-equipped infrastructure, social capital in these regions. Understanding of vulnerability to climate change suggests future research directions. This paper will provide a guide to local policy makers and fisheries managers about vulnerability and adaptation planning to climate change.

  • The climate projection with a high spatial resolution is required for the studies on regional climate changes. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has provided downscaled RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) scenarios over Korea with 1 km spatial resolution. If there are additional climate projections produced by dynamically downscale, the quality of impacts and vulnerability assessments of Korea would be improved with uncertainty information. This technical note intends to instruct the methods to downscale the climate projections dynamically from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. In particular, here we focus on the instruction to utilize CAM2WRF, a sub-program to link output of CESM to initial and boundary condition of WRF at Linux platform. We also provide the example of the dynamically downscaled results over Korean Peninsula with 50 km spatial resolution for August, 2020. This instruction can be helpful to utilize global scale climate scenarios for studying regional climate change over Korean peninsula with further validation and uncertainty/bias analysis.

  • The unequivocal risk of climate change, the weakness of energy security, and the problem of air quality will be possibly accelerated by the same reason, the enhanced fossil fuel dependancy in the future. It is obvious that greenhouse gases and air pollutants are mainly emitted from same sources. Moreover, greenhouse gases and air pollutants have their adversed impacts on same socio-economical, and environmental sectors. With these regards, several but limited studies have emphasized on the importance of the integrated management of climate change and air quality problem. In this study, we address the current trend of energy consumption and the change of air quality condition. Also the related policies are checked out in order to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and air pollutants in Korea. By surveying previous studies, it is shown that the cost of climate change actions can be reduced by air quality co-benefits and vis-a-versa. Also the integrated strategy for climate change and air quality is introduced in term of cost-effectiveness and co-benefit.
