This research intends to understand classroom culture of gifted youths in secondary mathematics. For this purpose, we have observed ethnographically the mathematics classes of gifted youths for eight months at two Science Education Centers for Gifted Youths. We have collected qualitative data using the methods, participation observation, interviewing, video taping, recording, collecting assistant materials. And these data were closely connected and analyzed synthetically. From this, we found the followings; First, gifted youths in mathematics evaluate the academic abilities as the best standard for their friendship. Second, the gifted youths in secondary mathematics are under an obsession that they should act like gifted youths. Third, even though they know the merits of class type of inquiry and discussions, they didn't participate actively in those types of class. Forth, main differences of classes between Gifted Education Centers and general middle school come from the difference of class type, the roles of teachers and students.

This study, with teachers form elementary schools in Chungju-si as its subjects, has investigated influence of school forest on satisfaction with school greenspace and environmental education. It has reached the following conclusions. As for recognition of and satisfaction of school greenspace there were meaningful differences between teachers form school forest model schools and ones from common schools, which was thought to be due to positive effects of school forest movement. It appeared that environmental education was carried out through audio-visual materials once a week in most schools. On the other hand, as for class places, 'classroom in parallel with outdoor class' and 'classroom education' appeared to be carried out most frequently in the case of school forest model schools, and 'classroom education' in the case of common schools. However, considering the fact that 'field learning' the most important element in environmental education, appeared to be carried out least frequently in both of the groups, which suggests that we should improve it for future through introduction of various field-experience learning programs. As a result of the survey of satisfaction with environmental education, some meaningful differences were recognized between school forest schools and common schools, and 'presence or absence of field learning spaces' was the most frequently answered reason for 'satisfied' and 'unsatisfied'. Thus, 'schools' and related institutions' enthusiastic efforts are needed for providing field-experience spaces where children can directly access to and explore into nature.
Despite the recent increasing interest in classroom expertise of teachers for gifted there has been lack of research on exploring or analyzing the components of classes for gifted tailored to the characteristics of each subject matter Given this, this study looked for the components of performance domain of classes for gifted in mathematics and then analyzed one teacher's 12 lessons in terms of the components. The features of the lessons included the establishment of classroom atmosphere by considering the characteristics of mathematically gifted students, the introduction of or expansion to mathematically enriched tasks, promotion to mathematically higher thinking, and emphasis of mathematical pattern, connections, and utility. This study is expected for researchers to provide a practical case on how to analyze elementary classes for gifted in mathematics. It also helps teachers who teach gifted students to develop professional vision of mathematics instruction and to increase their classroom expertise.
The purpose of this study was to explore what a science lesson using a digital textbook looked like and what kinds of implications could be drawn from the lesson. The study qualitatively described a 4th grade science lesson in the unit of Earth and Moon, analyzed the structure of the lesson, and critically interpreted the meaning of it. It was revealed that the introduction of a digital science textbook did not bring about changes in the already patternized structure of elementary science instruction as well as in the manner of classroom interaction. The result was followed by discussion concerning the ways the use of a digital textbook could change elementary science instruction and enable new types of classroom interaction. It was suggested that negotiations should be reached about the nature of digital science textbooks and their developments and that the teacher's own pedagogical roles in the science classroom should be improved.
In this paper, we designed and implemented a client/server distributed environment and developed a web-based virtual laboratory system for electronic circuits. Since our virtual laboratory system is implemented to describe the on-campus laboratory, the learners can obtain similar experimental data through it. The proposed virtual laboratory system is composed of four important components : Principle Classroom, Virtual Experiment Classroom, Evaluation Classroom and Overall Management System. Through our virtual laboratory, the learners will be capable of learning the concepts and theories related to electronic circuit experiments and how to operate the experimental equipments such as multimeters, function generators, digital oscilloscopes and DC power supplies. Also, every experimental activity occurred in our virtual laboratory is recorded on database and printed out on the preliminary report form. All of these can be achieved by the aid of the Management System. The database connectivity on the web is made by PHP and the virtual labol'atory environment is set up slightly differently for each learner. Finally, we have obtained several affirmative effects such as reducing the total experimental hours and the damage rate for experimental equipments and increasing learning efficiencies as well as faculty productivity.
This paper presents a virtual laboratory system which can be creating efficiencies in the learning process. The proposed virtual laboratory system for electrical circuits provides interactive learning environment under which the multimedia capabilities of world-wide web can be enhanced. Recently, according to the appearance of various virtual websites using multimedia technologies, the internet applications in engineering education have drawn muchinterests. But unidirectional communication, simple text/image-based webpages and tedious learning process without motivation, etc. have made the lowering of educational efficiency in cyberspace. This paper presents a virtual laboratory system which can be creating efficiencies in the learning process. The proposed virtual laboratory system for digital logic circuits provides interactive learning environment under which the multimedia capabilities of world-wide web can be enhanced. The virtual laboratory system is implemented to describe the on-campus laboratory, the learners can obtain similar experimental data through it. The virtual laboratory system is composed of four important components : principle classroom, simulation classroom, virtual experiment classroom and management system. In this study, we carried out a case study with 38 pre-service mathematics teachers. A theoretical basis of this study is the 'technology principle' by NCTM(2000) and teaching-learning methods by the 7th curriculum. Using mathematics program(Grafeq.), we executed classroom activities for developing materials assisting teaching-teaming for 7th-9th grade mathematics. Pre-service mathematics teachers constructed mathematical designs for each grade by Grafeq. program. We tried to find the results for three research problems. On the basis of observation data, interview data and document materials, we analysed our results as follows. First, our activities help Pre-service mathematics teachers to examine and understand each grade mathematics. Second, we can developamathematicaldesignineachgrade mathematics. Therefore mathematical designs developed in this study can be used middle school mathematics classroom. Third, pre-service mathematics teachers gained the belief that the activities using mathematical in this study can be applied program. effectively to teaching and loaming school mathematics.

This case study searched two secondary school science teachers' faiths on experiments in science classes. For this study, scaled questionnaires, open-ended questionnaires, structured and semi-structured interviews were conducted. Classroom activities were observed, and instructional plans and materials were collected. In addition, students of the two teachers' classes were interviewed with respect to their thoughts on the lessons. Data sources were analyzed inductively. The triangulation and the member checking guaranteed the validity of this study. As the results, the teachers' faiths on experiments were related to the constructivism, but the faiths were not in accord with their classroom practices. From these results, it was concluded that the teachers' misjudgments about the students' inquiry levels and unfit reorganizations of the experimental activities were the causes of the gap between the teachers' faiths on experiments and classroom practices.
The principal objective of this study was to evaluate elementary students' awareness of the importance of hand washing, as well as their hand-washing behavior. The data was collected by self-reported questionnaire from 697 students in elementary schools with serving food in a classroom in Busan. Their hand-washing frequency was high, at '3~4 times per day (37.0%)'. 51.0% of the respondents did not wash their hands that often because they were 'not accustomed' to washing their hands, and 35.9% of respondents regarded washing their hands as 'annoying'. The most frequently reported hand washing agent was 'soap and water (71.4%)'. Approximately 95~98% of the respondents always washed their hands after using the bathroom, 87.9% of them washed their hands before eating food, and 86.7% of them washed their hands upon returning home. However, 27.3%, 34.1% and 65.9% of the respondents did not wash their hands after handling money, after eating, and after coughing or sneezing, respectively. Significant factors related to increased hand-washing frequency were gender (p<0.001) and the period of attendance at kindergarten (p<0.05). The mean scores of importance and performance of hand washing were significantly higher for girls than for boys. The group with higher rate (over 4.5/5.0) for the importance of sanitary hand-washing behavior showed significantly higher scores in hand-washing behavior before serving food and before eating than those of the lower rated group (below 4.0/5.0). This study shows that sanitation education is required not only for food handlers but also for students in school foodservices.
