  • In present study, using 1572 low-income families and 266 Head Start teachers from Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) in the U.S., we examined the effects of mothers' reading and the characteristics of interaction between teacher-child interaction on 4-and 5-year-olds' cognitive development represented by their verbal and numerical abilities. Frequencies of mothers' reading at home consistently predicted higher scores of children's Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Woodcock Johnson Applied Problems. Teachers' sensitivity and permissiveness in their interactions with children in classroom were positively related to children's verbal abilities and teachers' sensitivity predicted better numerical abilities of children after controlling for mothers' reading and the characteristics of family and teacher. The findings shed light on the contributions of teacher behaviors and familial factors to children's cognitive development calling for attention to the need for parent education on cognitively stimulating family environments and continuing education for early childhood teachers focusing on quality interactions with young children.

Navigating the Transformative Landscape of Virtual Education Trends across India

  • Purpose: Education is the part of a fundamental human right across the world. In recent years, the trend of virtual education has increased tremendously. The paper aims to find the impact of adoption, accessibility, interactions, knowledge, and satisfaction on the success of transformation towards virtual education. Research design, data and methodology: Primary data has been gathered through the use of responses from students taking admission in virtual higher education to standardized questionnaires. Of the 250, only 122 were considered complete and have been used in further studies. Convinced random sampling method has been used. The results were evaluated using the Likert Five-Point Scale. For applying these statistical tools software SmartPLS and SPSS 19 have been used. The fitness of the model has been re-checked through an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Result: Results derived that adoption, accessibility, and interactions have a significant impact on knowledge, knowledge influences satisfaction level and satisfaction have a meaningful impact on the success of transformation towards virtual education. Conclusion: It can be concluded that virtual education has the potential to change the future of the education system and its potential in India. The highest importance is due to satisfaction (100%), adoption (98.7%), knowledge (91.4%), accessibility (62%), and interaction (29.2%).

Is It an 'Educational' Activity?: The Case of a High School Biology Laboratory Class

  • There have been many attempts to determine the value and the role of school laboratory experiment, but it seems hard to find consensus among these attempts from the perspective of education. This difficulty seems mainly due to disagreement on the concept of education, which has caused an instrumental attitude considering the school laboratory only as a means of developing science or pursuing various functions of school. However, the Endogenous Theory of Education (ETE), which claims education as 'a form of life', has recently paved the way for laboratory experiment to be justified as an opportunity of 'educooperation' allowing students to experience the intrinsic values of education in the medium of science. According to this theory, it is not the detailed practicals but the whole context where the laboratory activity is situated that matters in revealing the inherent educational phenomena. Through this new perspective, I observed two biology laboratory classes in a high school and analyzed the pattern of teacher-student and student-student interactions. Some meaningful educooperation was found in students' chattering, which has been traditionally considered as merely noise in the classroom, rather than in teacher-student interactions. This study discusses the reasons for these findings in detail and culminates in suggesting ways for accentuating the educational aspect of school laboratory activity.

등호의 관계적 이해를 강조한 수업에서 나타나는 학생의 노티싱 분석 (Analysis of student noticing in a lesson that emphasizing relational understanding of equals sign)

  • 본 연구는 초등학교 1학년 학생을 대상으로 등호의 관계적 이해를 강조한 수업에서 나타나는 학생의 노티싱을 초점의 중심, 집중하는 상호작용, 수학 과제, 수학 활동의 본질의 네 가지 측면에서 분석하였다. 구체적으로 선행연구에서 도출한 지도방안을 등호를 처음 도입하는 1학년 덧셈과 뺄셈 단원에 적용하여 등호의 관계적 이해를 강조한 수업을 실행하고, 이 과정에서 나타난 학생의 노티싱을 종합적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 실제 수업 맥락에서 초점의 중심은 등식의 구조와 과제 형태, 교사와 학생의 상호작용, 교실 관행 등에 영향을 받았으며, 특히 학생이 등호를 관계적으로 인식할 수 있도록 돕는 특정한 교사와 학생의 상호작용을 발견할 수 있었다. 또한 크기가 같은 두 양에 주목하는 경우와 양변의 관계에 주목하는 경우 등식을 관계적으로 추론할 수 있었던 것과 같이 등식에 대한 학생의 노티싱은 등식을 추론하는 방식에 영향을 미친다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 연구결과를 통해 등호의 지도 방안에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다.

테라포밍에 대한 과학적 모델링 수업에서 소그룹 상호작용 중 발현되는 초등학생의 창의성 (Elementary Students' Creativity Appear in Small Group Interactions During Model-Based Classrooms on Terraforming)

  • 본 연구는 학생들의 모델링 과정에서 나타나는 창의성을 사회적 구성주의 관점에서 사회적 상호작용을 통해 학습자가 구성할 수 있는 인지적 능력으로 보고, 이것이 성인의 지도보다는 학습자끼리 서로 상호작용할 때 더 활성화 될 수 있음에 주목하였다(Vygotsky, 1978). 이에 따라 모델링 과정에서 나타나는 학생들의 창의성과 그것에 영향을 미치는 소그룹 상호작용의 특징에 대하여 질적 분석을 통한 본질적 사례연구를 수행하였다. 연구자는 실제 수업에 활용할 9차시의 모듈을 개발하였다. 연구 참여자는 한국의 4학년 초등학생 24명(남 12명, 여 12명)이다. 연구자는 수업자 및 관찰자로서 연구에 참여했으며, 수업 동영상 자료와 녹음 자료, 학생 면담 녹음 자료, 활동지 등의 자료를 수집하였다. 창의성의 수준은 'Mini-C' 창의성(Beghetto & Kaufman, 2007)을 기준으로 하였으며, 학생들의 창의성 분석을 위하여 Davis, Rimm & Siegle(2010)가 제시한 19가지 창의적 능력을 참고하였다. 연구 결과, 개인 모델링 과정에서 주로 나타난 학생들의 창의성은 정교화, 평가, 시각화, 성급한 결론의 유보, 독창성, 분석, 집중 등이었다. 또한 모델링 과정에서 학생들의 창의성에 영향을 주는 소그룹 상호작용은 '제안', '동의', '질문', '반박', '전환'의 5가지로 분류할 수 있었다. 각각의 상호작용을 통해 학생들은 모델링 과정에서 자신만의 생각과 아이디어를 표현하고, 수정하는 과정을 보여주었다. 특히 어린 학생들임에도 불구하고, 자신의 개인 모델을 무조건적으로 반영하기 보다는 다양한 창의적 능력의 사용과 합의를 통해 더 나은 그룹 모델을 형성하고자 하였다. 이러한 점은 앞으로 과학적 모델링 연구에서 학생들의 창의성에 더욱 주목해야 할 필요성을 보여준다.

유아의 실내놀이행동 군집에 따른 예측변인 연구 (Clusters of Preschoolers' Play Behaviors)

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the predictors of indoor play behaviors using cluster analyses. Methods: Data from 963 children (age 4 years) who participated in the $5^{th}$ phase of the Panel Study of Korean Children, their parents, and their teachers were analyzed using K-means clustering analyses, F-tests and multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results: The clustering analyses revealed three distinctive profiles: positive-theme oriented, general-exploratory/manipulative, and negative-exploratory/manipulative groups. Child characteristics, including cognition, language, and social level, and teachers' age were significantly associated with the groups in a different way; the clusters were partially different in the gender and creativity of children, interaction level of teachers' interaction, classroom environment, and program types that children attended. Conclusion: Findings revealed three clusters of play behaviors and highlighted the importance of the ecological variables that determined the clusters.

Educational Satisfaction in the Cyber Space

  • The new paradigm of education in the cyber space is not limited by time or locations. The students do not need to attend classroom physically and simultaneously. This study tries to probe the relationships among demographic variables and instructional variables with students' satisfaction with the management class in a cyber university. The results demonstrate that demographic variables are not significantly related with students' satisfaction. Rather instructional variables such as personal interactions with professors, job related contents and careful reduction of difficulties countered during the class proceeding are more significantly related with learning satisfaction. The result shows the newly emerged internet based education system requires in-depth cooperation among professors, system engineers, education instrument designers, and students.

협동학습 전략의 교수 효과: 중학교 물상 수업에 LT 모델의 적용 (The Instructional Influences of Cooperative Learning Strategies : Applying the LT Model to Middle School Physical Science Course)

  • This study investigated the influences of the cooperative learning strategies upon students' achievement and their perceptions of learning environments in a middle school physical science course. Prior to instruction, the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking was administered, and its score was used as a blocking variable. Mid-term examination score was used as a covariate. For the treatment group with heterogeneous grouping, cooperative learning instruction (the Learning Together model) was used, which emphasized group reward, individual accountability, and role division. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. After instruction, an achievement test consisting of three subtests (knowledge, understanding, and application), and the perception questionnaire of classroom and laboratory environments, were administered. ANCOVA results revealed that there was a significant interaction between instruction and the level of logical reasoning ability although there were no significant differences in all three subtest scores of the achievement test. For the concrete operational reasoners, the treatment group performed better in the subtests of understanding and application than the control group. For students at the formal and transition levels, however, the treatment group scored lower than the control group. Significant interactions were also found in the perceptions of classroom environment and laboratory environment. For the concrete operational reasoners, the treatment group showed more positive perception than the control group. For the students at the formal and transition levels, the control group had positive perception than the treatment group. Educational implications are discussed.

Design of multi-sensor system for comprehensive indoor air quality monitoring

  • 본 연구는 다양한 실내 환경에서 공기질을 모니터링 할 수 있는 다중 센서 시스템인 AirDeep-Room을 설계 및 개발하였다. 이 시스템은 CO2, TVOC, 미세먼지, 온도, 습도 등을 실시간으로 측정하며, 멀티 센서를 통해 다양한 환경에서의 공기질 변화를 분석할 수 있는 장점을 제공한다. AirDeep-Room 시스템은 low data 형식으로 데이터를 실시간으로 확인할 수 있으며, 실내 환경에서의 공기질에 대한 분석을 진행하였다. 설계한 센서 시스템을 상이한 환경인 서버실과 강의실에 설치해 실험을 수행한 결과, 서버실에서의 온도와 습도는 -0.24의 음의 상관관계를, 강의실에서는 0.43의 양의 상관관계를 보였다. 강의실에서의 실험 결과는 학생 수와 CO2 및 TVOC 농도가 r=0.69로 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 이는 학생 수가 실내 공기질 변화에 중요한 영향을 미칠 수 있음을 보여준다. 이러한 결과는 AirDeep-Room 시스템이 다양한 환경에서 공기질을 보다 효과적으로 관리할 수 있는 기반을 제공하며, 인구 밀도가 높은 공간에서 공기질 개선을 위한 중요한 역할을 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
