In this study, ultimate strength characteristics of clamped sandwich panels with metal faces and an elastic isotropic core under combined in-plane compression and lateral pressure loads are investigated to verify the applicability of the ultimate strength design formula for ship structures. Alternative elastomer-cored steel sandwich panels are selected instead of the conventional bottom stiffened panels for a Suezmax-class tanker and then the ultimate strength characteristics of the selected sandwich panels are examined by using nonlinear finite element analysis. The change in the ultimate strength characteristics due to the change in the thickness of the face plate and core as well as the amplitude of lateral pressure are summarized and compared with the results obtained by using the ultimate strength design formula and nonlinear finite element analysis. The insights and conclusions developed in the present study will be useful for the design and development of applications for sandwich panels in double hull tanker structures.

In this paper, the propagation of elastic wave generated by loading impact to plates made of isotropic or anisotropic material was studied. And the influence of boundary conditions(free or clamped edge) upon the reflection of elastic wave of isotropic plate such as aluminum plate showed circular interferometric fringe pattern, whereas that of anisotropic plate such as epoxy composite laminates showed elliptical one. And the transverse displacement curves obtained from experiment and theory for both plates agreed well. Also, the waves reflected from the boundary edges showed much differences according to the boundary condition of edges.

In this paper, the propagation of elastic wave generated by loading impact to plates made of isotropic of anisotropic material was studied. And the influence of boundary conditions (free or clamped edge) upon the reflection of elastic wave was anlyzed. Also, double exposure holographic interferometer using ruby pulse laser was formed in order to investigate transient waves. Before the elasitc wave was reflected from the edges, the elastic wave of isotropic plate such as aluminum plate showed circular interferometric fringe pattern, whereas that of anisotropic plate such as epoxy composite laminates showed elliptical one. And the transverse displacement curves obtained from experiment and theory for both plates agreed well. The major objects of this report are to supplement data of natural frequencies of thin elastic rectangular plates to the available data, and to give an experimental verification for natural frequencies obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method, the generation set of which are eigenfunctions of Euler beams. For the first object the following five models, for which data only for the fundamental mode or data only for square plates are available, are adopted; (1) two opposed edges are clamped and the other two opposed edges simply supported (C-C, S-S), (2) one edge is simply supported and the other three edges clamped (C-C, C-S), (3) one edge is free and the other three edges clamped (C-C, C-F), (4) two adjacent edges are clamped and the other two adjacent edges free (C-F, C-F). For the (C-C, S-S) model the frequency equation obtained with the mode shapes assumed as of a single trigonometric series is solved. And for the other four models Rayleigh-Ritz method taking eigenfunctions of Euler beams as the generating set is applied. The numerical examples are obtained up to the fourth, the fifth or the sixth order depending on the range of the aspect ratio (0.1-10.0). The number of terms in the generating set for Rayleigh-Ritz method is fifteen for all models. For the experiment three models made of 3.2mm thickness mild steel plate for general structure use were prepared in following size; $300mm{\times}600mm,\;600mm{\times}600mm\;and\;900mm{\times}600mm$. Their boundary conditions are made to fit (C-C, C-F) condition. From the experiment mechanical impedance curves based on the frequency response method were obtained together with phase relation diagrams. The experimental data are resulted in good conformity to calculated values.

The existing analytical solutions for rectangular plates with three edges clamped and the other free are derived based on nondimensional differential equation and their characteristics are analyzed. Since Timoshenko and Woinowsky-Krieger's method (1959) can give solutions for the case limited to the aspect ratio of the plates less than one, this method are proved to be impractical for the bending moment calculation of the plates under consideration. Horii and Moto's method(1968) are modified by adding stabilizing terms to suppress overflow in the matrix computation, from which the series solution with maximum 150 terms can be obtained. By use of the series solution the convergence of computed bending moments is tested. The modified method can be shown to calculate the deflection properties for the plates with wide range of aspect ratios, but the computed x moment at the corner points formed by the free edge and the clamped edges can not satisfy the boundary condition and the cause of problem is discussed in detail.
A microcantilever is a well-known MEMS structure for sensing bio-chemical molecules. When bio-chemical molecules are adsorbed on the microcantilever's surface, resonance frequency shift is generated. There are two issues in this phenomena. The first one is which one between mass change and surface stress change effects is more dominant on the resonance frequency shift. The second one is what will be the performance change when the boundary condition is changed from cantilevers to double clamped beams. We have studied the effect of surface stress change and compared it with that of mass change by using FEM analysis. Furthermore, for microstructures having different boundary conditions, we have studied Q-factor, which determines the detection limit of micro/nano mechanical sensors.

Steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) have been recognized as an effective seismic-force resisting systems due to their excellent strength and stiffness characteristics. The infill steel plate in a SPSW is constrained by a boundary frame consisting of vertical and horizontal structural members. The main purpose of this study was to investigate deformation modes and hysteretic characteristics of steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) to consider the effects of their aspect ratios and width-to-thicness ratios. The finite element model (FEM) was establish in order to simulate cyclic responses of SPSWs which have the two-side clamped boundary condition and made of conventional steel grade. The stress distribution obtained from the FEA results demonstrated that the principal stresses on steel plate with large thickness-to-width ratio were more uniformly distributed along its horizontal cross section due to the formation of multiple struts.

The natural frequencies of Al square plates with a brass inclusion were analyzed by the rule of mixtures. The rule of mixtures is the method to derive natural frequency mutiplying effective inplane wane speed and nondimensional frequency parameters. Numerical models were Al square plates with an inclusion with cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type, 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type and fully clamped edge type. In cantilever type plates, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type plates and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge plates with an inclusion, good agreement within 10% obtained from rule of mixtures' results and numerical analysis results within inclusion area ratio 1/9. It was found that the natural frequencies of the cantilever type, 2 clamped edge-2 free edge type and 3 clamped edge-1 free edge type plates with an inclusion decrease as the size of inclusion increases when inclusion is located center of plates. And when the density of inclusion is less than the plates, natural frequency of plates with an inclusion increases as the size of inclusion increases.
In this paper, the behavior of plates partially restrained against rotation under stress gradient is investigated. As a first stage, an energy formulation is presented to model this boundary condition and a general expression is derived for the prediction of the elastic buckling of the plate under this general loading condition. The accuracy of the derived expression is compared numerically using the Galerkin method with other available data for the two limiting conditions of rotationally free and clamped boundaries. Results show that the prediction is within a 5% difference. The influence of rotational restraint and stress gradient upon the buckling load and the associated buckling mode is investigated. Numerical results show sensitivity of the buckling mode to the degree of rotational restraint and the variation of the buckling load with the stress gradient.

In this paper, the thermal buckling of thick composite angle-ply laminates subject to uniform temperature distribution is studied. For the plates of 4-edges simply supported condition and those of 4-edges clamped condition, the critical buckling temperatue is derived, using tile finite element method based on the shear deformation theory. The effects of lamination angle, layer number, laminate thickness, plate aspect ratio and boundary constraints upon the critical buckling temperature are presented.
