  • Following an internal column failure, adjacent double-span beams above the failed column will play a critical role in the load transfer and internal force redistribution within the remaining structure, and the span-to-depth ratios of double-span beams significantly influence the structural resistance capacity against progressive collapse. Most existing studies have focused on the collapse-resistant performances of single-story symmetric structures, whereas limited published works are available on the collapse resistances of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. To this end, in this study, numerical models based on shell elements were employed to investigate the structural behavior of multi-story steel frames with unequal spans. The simulation models were validated using the previous experimental results obtained for single- and two-story steel frames, and the load-displacement responses and internal force development of unequal-span three-story steel frames under three cases were comprehensively analyzed. In addition, the specific contributions of the different mechanism resistances of unequal-span, double-span beams of each story were separated quantitatively using the energy equilibrium theory, with an aim to gain a deeper level of understanding of the load-resistance mechanisms in the unequal-span steel frames. The results showed that the axial and flexural mechanism resistances were determined by the span ratio and linear stiffness ratio of double-span beams, respectively.

  • This study presents a methodical investigation into improving structural designs through the analytical examination of the dynamic behavior of functionally graded plates (FGPs) resting on viscoelastic foundations. By employing a four variable first-order shear deformation theory, the study computes non-dimensional frequencies for a variety of porous FGPs with diverse graded patterns and porosity distributions. Different gradient patterns of the plates are considered, and three distinct functions-sigmoid (S-FGM), exponential (E-FGM), and power-law (P-FGM)-are utilized to assess material performance in specific directions. The equations of motion are derived and solved using both Navier's method and Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for vibration frequency are provided to validate the proposed methodology against existing literature. Furthermore, a comprehensive parametric analysis is conducted, taking into account various factors such as ceramic material, porosity distribution, gradient index, length-to-thickness ratio, gradient pattern, and damping coefficient. The findings suggest that enhancing the damping coefficient of the viscoelastic foundation can significantly improve the free-vibrational response of functionally graded material plates.

  • The structures with many perforated openings are widely used as a load-carrying element in the fields of civil engineering works, top slab of prestressed concrete reactor vessel, petrochemical industries and the like. Perforated concrete plates are usually thick. Therefore, the effect of transverse shear deformation is not negligible. This paper describes a new analytical method of perforated plates combining both the finite element method for effective elastic constants and the usual method in solving orthotropic plate with transverse shear deformation.

  • A procedure employing a Teaching-Learning Based Optimization (TLBO) method is developed to design discrete pin jointed structures. TLBO process consists of two parts: the first part represents learning from teacher and the second part illustrates learning by interaction among the learners. The results are compared with those obtained using other various evolutionary optimization methods considering the best solution, average solution, and computational effort. Consequently, the TLBO algorithm works effectively and demonstrates remarkable performance for the optimization of engineering design applications.

  • In this paper, new results using bounds for the solution of the discrete Lyapunov matrix equation are proposed, and some of the existing works are generalized. The bounds obtained are advantageous in that they provide nontrivial upper bounds even when some existing results yield trivial ones.

  • In this paper, He's Variational Approach (VA) is used to solve high nonlinear vibration equations. The proposed approach leads us to high accurate solution compared with other numerical methods. It has been established that this method works very well for whole range of initial amplitudes. The method is sufficient for both linear and nonlinear engineering problems. The accuracy of this method is shown graphically and the results tabulated and results compared with numerical solutions.

  • GPS has become an established technique in structural health monitoring. This paper presents the application of an on-line GPS RTK system on the Zhujiang Huangpu Bridge (China) for monitoring bridge deck and towers movements. In this study, both the form and functions of movements of the deck and towers of the bridge under affecting loads were monitored in lateral, longitudinal and vertical directions. Such movements were described in time and frequency domains by determining the trend, torsion, periodical of the series using probability density function (PDF). The results of the time series GPS data are practical and useful to bridge health monitoring.
