  • The adsorption method for the determination of the formation constants of the metal complexes with organic acids was developed by using membrane filters. The adsorption method involved the measurements of radioactivities of the adsorbed metal on membrane filters and the filtrate solution after the radioactive metal ion were filtered through membrane filters in the presence of organic ions of varying concentration. Comparing the adsorption method with the ion exchange method, it was seen that the adsorption method was simpler and faster than the ion exchange method. As an example of the metal complex with organic acid yttrium citrate complex was chosen, and the formation constant of the complex obtained by the adsorption method showed $K_f=2.0{\times}10^{-4}(l. mole^{-1})$ at a pH of 7. Also the present study revealed that the carrierfree state of yttrium in aqueous solution was present in the completely ionized state.

  • Despite the fact that the dissolution test can serve as an effective tool for drug quality control and prediction of in vivo drug performance, there are a number of drugs with no established dissolution specifications because they were developed quite a long time ago. Under this circumstances, KFDA started the new project that establishes dissolution method and specifications for drugs with no dissolution specifications listed in the Korea Pharmaceutical Codex (KPC). This project aims for promoting the appropriate management of oral solid dosage forms. Seoul regional KFDA selected 2 items, Nicametate citrate tablet and Norfloxacin capsule, for establishing dissolution specifications. We went through the following procedures to develop the dissolution method and specifications: (1) Validation of dissolution test equipment, (2) Purchase of test drugs, (3) Preliminary test with one of the test products (1 lot), (4) Validation of analysis methods (3 lots), (5) Final tests and cross tests among other laboratory to establish dissolution specifications, (6) Additional test with the other test drugs. The outcome of this study will be reflected in revision of the KPC. It is believed that the quality control and evaluation of oral solid dosage forms listed in KPC will be advanced with the revision which adds additional dissolution test and specifications for the drugs with no established dissolution specifications.

  • It is a fact that there are recent increasing trends or incidence of the colorectal carcinoma among other colorectal diseases. In such trend, the early detection remain to be most important by the air contrast barium enema and total colonofiberscopy. There are several ways to prepare the colon for barium enema and colonofiberscopy which include several agents. The mechanical cleansing have been used most frequently since Brown's method was adapted to be most perfect for colon deansing. The ideal laxatives and enema solutions were limited to adequate dose, it's effectiveness, patient's diet and bowel habit, minimal side effect, low cost and simple to perform. In order to compare the effectiveness of various cleansing solutions, six experimental methods were formed as shown; 1. normal saline enema, 2. castor oil with normal saline enema, 3. castor oil with soap suds enema, 4. magnesium citrate with normal saline, 5. magnesium citrate with soap suds enema and 6. ingestion of Golyetly solution. The authors have compared and determined the degree of cleanness by an experienced endoscopist. The total number of patients was 247, age distribution was $43{\pm}15$ years old, and sex distribution was 133 males and 114 females. The grade I and II represented no difficulties at performing the colonofiberscopy, but grade ill and N had some difficulties, even unable to perform the colonofiberscopy. The effectiveness the cleansing agents, represented with grade I and II was 95.9% (47/49) in method 6, 93.2%(54/58) in method 2, 83.3%(30/33) in method 3, 70.0%(28/10) in method 5, 66.7%(16/24) in method i, and 45.7%(18/40) in method 4. Method 2 and 6 were the most effective in normal bowel habit patients. In constipated patients, method 6 was the most effective and all method except method 11 were effective in diarrhea patients. The degrees of less mucosal irritation by various bowel cleansing method were in the order of method 6(100%), 1(100%), 5(74%), 2(69%). In subjective symptoms and cleansing groups, abdominal distension, pain, nausea and vomiting were complained, and that's subject symptoms were in the order of method 3(88.9%), 6 (79.6%), 1(75%), 5(72.5%), 2(72.4%), 4(67.5%). In conclusion, we believe that the Golytely of the mechanical cleansing solution for colonofiberscopy was the most effective, but others depended on the patient's condition und bowel habit.

  • Perovskite-type oxides are promising oxygen carriers in producing oxygen-enriched $CO_2$ gas stream for oxyfuel combustion. In this study, a new series of $SrCo_{1-x}Fe_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8) was prepared and used to produce $O_2/CO_2$ mixture gas. The phase, crystal structure, and morphological properties of $SrCo_{1-x}Fe_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ were investigated through X-ray diffraction, specific surface area measurements, and environmental scanning electron microscopy. The oxygen desorption performance of $SrCo_{1-x}Fe_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ was studied in a fixed-bed reactor system. Results showed that the different x values of $SrCo_{1-x}Fe_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ have no obvious effects on crystalline structure. However, the oxygen desorption performance of $SrCo_{1-x}Fe_xO_{3-{\delta}}$ is improved by Co doping. Moreover, $SrCo_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}O_{3-{\delta}}$ synthesized via a new EDTA method has a larger BET surface area ($40.396m^2/g$), smaller particle size (48.3 nm), and better oxygen production performance compared with that synthesized through a liquid citrate method.

  • A method is described for the selective determination of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in aqueous solutios by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Selective extraction of $Cr_2O_7^{2-}$ was performed by Aliquat 336/NIBK from the mixtures of $Cr^{3+}$ and $Cr_2O_7^{2-}$, and the extraction of $Cr^{3+}$ was followed after complex formation with citrate by using the same extractant. The concentraction of each analyte in the extract was determined by $N_2O-C_2H_2$ flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The recoveries of $Cr^{3+}$ and $Cr_2O_7^{2-}$ from 50mL of aqueous solution ranging 0.1~1.0 ${\mu}g/mL$ as Cr respectively by single extractions with 5 mL of 1%(V/V) Aliquat 336/MIBK were resulted as 98.8∼101.7%.

  • Some cytotoxicity studies for the interpretation of the interaction between nanoparticles and cells are non-mechanistic and time-consuming. Therefore, non-biological screening methods, which are faster and simpler than in-vivo and in-vitro methods, are required as alternatives to current cytotoxicity tests. Here, we proposed a simple screening method for the analysis of the interaction between several AgNPs (bare-, citrate-, and polyvinylpyrrolidone-coating) and dye-containing vesicles acting as a biomimetic cell-membrane. The interaction between AgNPs and vesicles could be evaluated readily by UV-vis spectra. Absorbance deviation in UV-vis spectra revealed a large attraction between neighboring particles and vesicles. This was confirmed by (Derjagin, Landau, Verwey, and Overbeek) theory and DMF (dark-field microscopy) analysis. This proposed method might be useful for analyzing the cytotoxicity of nanoparticles with cell-membranes instead of in vitro or in vivo cytotoxicity tests.

  • Novel citric acid based Ti, Nb and Ta precursors that are highly stable in the presence of water were developed. No alkoxides of Ti, Nb and Ta were utilized in the preparation, instead much less moisture-sensitive metallic Ti, NbCl5 and TaCl5 were chosen as starting chemicals for Ti, Nb and Ta, respectively. The feasibility of these chemicals as precursors is demonstrated in the powder synthesis of BaTi4O9, Y3NbO7 and LiTaO3. The water-resistant Ti precursor was employed as a new source of water-soluble Ti in the amorphous citrate method, and phase pure BaTi4O9 in powdered form was successfully synthesized at 800 ?. The Pechini-type polymerizable complex method using the water-resistant Nb and Ta precursors was applied to the synthesis of Y3NbO7 and LiTaO3, and both the powder materials in their pure form were successfully synthesized at reduced tempera-tures, viz. 500-700 ?. The remarkable retardation of hydrolysis of these water-resistant precursors is explained in terms of the partial charge model theory.

  • Addition of salts or their mixtures and microwave heating were studies for their effects on Kakdugi fermentation. The Kakdugi, a Korean fermented Chinese radish, were prepared by salting in 15% NaCl solution and fermented at $25^{\circ}C$. From the results, a first order reaction relationship was found between salt permeated into the radish and time during brining in $5{\sim}10%$ NaCl solution. Addition of 0.05M KCl into 15% NaCl brining solution or microwave heating of salted radish for 3 minutes showed a little decreasing effect on Kakdugi fermentation rate while beating for 1 or 2 minuted resulted a rather increase. When three different salt mixtures in the concentration range of $0.001{\sim}0.01\;M$ were added into half fermented Kakdugi(appr. pH 4.4), the fermentation was greatly controlled based on pH change. Among the salt mixtures, mixture III$(Na_2HPO_4,\;Na_2PO_4,\;NaNO_2,\;Ca\;EDTA,\;Sod.\;citrate)$ showed a most significant effect where the time required to reach pH 4.0 after addition was extended by more than 6 folds when it was compared to the control method.

  • The optimum analytical method of aldehydes, ozone by-products, was established by reverse phase liquid chromatography. Six aldehydes including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, propionaldehyde, butylaldehyde and benzaldehyde, and one ketone including acetone were selected as aldehyde test samples through preliminary experiments. Such analytical conditions as the pH of citrate buffer solution, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of DNPH, the component and composition of desorption solvent were optimized. As the result, pH 3.0 of citrate buffer solution, 40$^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, 15 minutes of reaction time, and 0.012% of DNPH concentration were chosen as optimum conditions. Aldehydes-DNPH derivatives in water were concentrated on $C_18$ Sep-Pak cartridge and followed by elution of their derivatives fraction with THF/ACN(70/30) mixture, and showed recoveries of the range from 87 to 107%. Separation condition on Nova-Pak $C_18$ column with low pressure gradient elution from ACN/MeOH/water(30/10/60) of an initial condition to 80% ACN of a final condition was found to give a good resolution within 20 minutes of run time. 86% to 103% of recovery for aldehydes using this method was similar to that for aldehyde using EPA Method 554 which is ranged from 84% to 103%.
