  • Road and maritime transport which connecting main cities in the world is already fully saturated, and the loss cost caused by recent high oil prices is getting bigger. Transportation by inland waterway is rising as an alternative method of them. Concerning this, the GI Waterway is on construction to connect the Yellow sea and Seoul. Nevertheless, there are no existing aids to navigation around the area and no studies have been carried out for them. As the construction progresses, installation of proper aids to navigation should be considered and profound studies need to be carried out. This study focused on introduction of the cases and the systems of other countries inland waterway aids to navigation and suggested a suitable navigation aids system along the inland waterways in Korea and a way of installation for that system.

  • In order to meet recent increasing demand for electric power in large cities, plans are being made to introduce 345kV lines into large urban areas. Up to now, OF cables have been used for 345kV fines, but nowadays XLPE insulated cables are preferred as they are easier to maintain due to phenomenal advances in plastic insulation technology, therefore cable manufacturing companies are trying to improve the performance and reliability of UHV CV cables and their accessories. For the purpose, our company has developed facilities for testing UHV cables. In this paper, we describes the methodology adopted for the design and development of a test termination, conducted the electrical test of UHV cables. Based on detailed analytical studies for electrical field distribution, the internal electrical design for the testing end has been carried out.

  • The skylines of many cities worldwide are still defined by the dominant and ubiquitous office blocks of the twentieth century. While there is consensus stating that future tall building typologies should depart substantially from these past models, the inheritance of large and obsolete tall office building stocks presents a problem of global significance. Too old for present corporate models, but too new for gaining public historical importance, the twentieth-century office tower is a typology under threat of extinction. However, the need for a culturally informed strategy of preservation for that generation of tall buildings is seldom advocated. Drawing evidence from the case of Melbourne, Australia, this article presents a methodological pathway to overcome pitfalls of memory and interpretation, which commonly prevent an unbiased assessment of the value and urban contribution of late-twentieth-century skyscrapers.

  • The first full-scale u-City operation has started in Dongtan u-City. As local cities take over and operates the u-City, unexpected issues arise such as securing the budget of operating costs and self-providing the costs with business models utilizing the u-City assets. The paper presents a strategy for solving these issues. The strategy provides a foundation(infrastructure) for long-term operation models which may reduce the long-term operation costs. In order to establish the economic operating framework of u-City, suggested are some cost-reduction models based on the operating costs structure. For each model, a base framework with comparative analysis of operating costs is provided. With these models, each u-City may select a relevant model according to the characteristics of it. We hope that the framework provides the foundation for efficient and sustainable u-City operations.

  • In this study, a discrete-event simulation model is developed to estimate load factors and the corresponding revenues under different pricing and dispatching policies. The model has been employed to forecast the inbound and the outbound air cargo demands of the major Northeastern Chinese cities, and the simulation results were compared to the actual demands obtained from real-life airline operations. The statistical analysis confirms that the simulation model is able to provide accurate estimates for air cargo demands, and thus, the model may be employed to be a useful tool for air cargo demand management.
