A Study on the Sustainability of Compact Cities in Korea

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the policy implications of establishing a compact city in Seoul, analyzing whether it is an appropriate and efficient eco-friendly housing supply alternative. Research design, data, and methodology: The analysis criteria include efficiency, safety, and comfort, with efficiency encompassing economic, energy, and public transport links' efficiency. Safety and comfort are aspects of eco-friendliness, housing safety, and improvement in living environments. Results: In terms of economic efficiency, compact cities are a less expensive option than purchasing land for housing construction. To increase energy efficiency, we plan to adopt eco-friendly energy sources. Transportation efficiency is high in locations near public transport stations. To enhance safety and comfort, we intend to create large-scale parks and forests in Seoul. To ensure residential safety, measures will be taken to reduce road vibration, vehicle noise, and scattering dust. Conclusions: Selecting an appropriate location that provides convenient public transportation is essential for creating a compact city for housing in a large city. Combining a compact and smart city is necessary, and implementing smart technologies is needed to prevent dust, noise, and vibrations, which are undesirable in a residential environment.

Updates on parasite infection prevalence in the Joseon period based on parasitological studies of human coprolites isolated from archaeological sites in the cities of Euijeongbu, Gumi, and Wonju

  • Parasite infection rates estimated by examining ancient coprolites can provide insights into parasitism in Joseon society. Using newly discovered Joseon period cases is essential to regularly update the parasite infection rates and reinforce the reliability of our previous estimations. In the present study, we investigated parasite infections in Joseon coprolites newly isolated from the cities of Euijeongbu, Gumi, and Wonju. We then updated the overall parasite infection rates of Joseon period samples (n= 30) as follows: 86.7% (26/30) for Trichuris trichiura, 56.7% (17/30) for Ascaris lumbricoides, 30.0% (9/30) for Clonorchis sinensis, and 30.0% (9/30) for Paragonimus westermani. The parasite infection rates in the Joseon society, estimated through coprolite examination, were very similar to those determined previously despite the addition of new cases to the existing data pool.

Compressibility of fine-grained sediments based on pore water salinity changes

  • Coastal and offshore structures such as ports and offshore wind farms will often need to be built on fine-grained sediments. Geotechnical properties associated with sediment compressibility are key parameters for marine construction designs especially on soft grounds, which involve clay-mineral dominated fines that can consolidate and settle significantly in response to engineered and environmental loads. We conduct liquid limit tests and 1D consolidation tests with fine-grained soils (silica silt, mica, kaolin and bentonite) and biogenic soils (diatom). The pore fluids for the liquid limit tests include deionized water and a series of brines with NaCl salt concentrations of 0.001 m, 0.01 m, 0.1 m, 0.6 m and 2.0 m, and the pore fluids for the consolidation tests deionized water, 0.01 m, 0.6 m, 2 m. The salt concentrations help the liquid limits of kaolin and bentonite decrease, but those of diatom slightly increase. The silica silt and mica show minimal changes in liquid limit due to salt concentrations. Accordingly, compression indices of soils follow the trend of the liquid limit as the liquid limit determined the initial void ratio of the consolidation test. Diatoms are more likely to be broken than clastic sediments during to loading, and diatom-rich sediment is therefore generally more compressible than clastic-rich sediment.

Investigation the effect of dynamic loading on the deformation of ancient man-made underground spaces

  • The ancient underground cities are a collection of self-supporting spaces that have been manually excavated in the soil or rock in the past. Because these structures have a very high cultural value due to their age, the study of their stability under the influence of natural hazards, such as earthquakes, is very important. In this research, while introducing the underground city of Ouyi Nushabad located in the center of Iran as one of the largest man-made underground cities of the old world, the analysis of dynamic stability is performed. For this purpose, the dynamic stress-displacement analysis has been performed through numerical modeling using the finite element software PLAXIS. At this stage, by simulating the Khorgo earthquake as one of the large-scale earthquakes that occurred in Iran, with a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, dynamic analysis by time history method has been performed on three selected sections of underground spaces. This study shows that the maximum amount of horizontal and vertical dynamic displacement is 12.9 cm and 17.7 cm, respectively, which was obtained in section 2. The comparison of the results shows that by increasing the cross-sectional area of the excavation, especially the distance between the roof and the floor, in addition to increasing the amount of horizontal and vertical dynamic displacement, the obtained maximum acceleration is intensified compared to the mapping acceleration applied to the model floor. Therefore, preventive actions should be taken to stabilize the excavations in order to prevent damage caused by a possible earthquake.

  • During the Japanese colonial period, Japan exploited the entire Korean Peninsula and targeted not only cities but also rural areas. The exploitation of rural area was accelerated with the support of Oriental colonization Company and The countryside was a living scene of direct exploitation. However, most of the research was concentrated in representative port cities such as Kunsan, which transports logistics such as rice and grains. There was insufficient research on how Japanese entered the country, how Korean were plundered, and the rural villages that were the target of exploitation. The contents of hi-exploitation were also historical and historical humanities such as colonial land ownership and farm management, and the spatial structure of the existing traditional villages were insufficiently investigated. An Empirical Study of the Effect of Oil Prices on International Price Dispersion (원유가격이 국가 간 가격분산에 미치는 영향에 대한 실증 연구)

  • The paper studies the degree of international price dispersion for 300 individual goods and services between cities of three country groups over 1999 and 2013, focusing on the role of oil prices in generating deviations from the law of one price. We find that while oil prices did not contribute to the trend in cross-country price dispersion, it does account for within-country price dispersion. Once the oil price effect is subtracted out, the remaining price dispersion between U.S. cities no longer exhibits a noticeable upward trend. If oil prices increase transportation costs, they should increase the deviations from the law of one price, raising price dispersion. Our findings indicate that this effect is more pronounced within a country, while factors such as elasticity of substitution and other trade barriers are likely to matter more in price dispersion across borders. We view our results as complementary to those that emphasize the role of time-varying factors in accounting for price dispersion.

  • E-infrastructural economy for ICT Living-Labs is a need for economic and cultural changes in various types of cars in accordance with the supply of the electric car. Depending on the number of cases by analyzing the supply and demand of electric vehicles among Korea and Northern Europe countries. it was indirectly proved that it makes economic growth. The research design is analyzed with the data and how to respond quickly to focus on the possibility of potential changes to the infrastructure realization and commercialization of government enterprises or electric cars through the ICT Living-Labs in Nordic countries. The data indicates that the leading commercialization emphasize on the development of the electric economic convergence and scalability for electric vehicle. When It shows the time of the infrastructure as ICT Living-Labs being delayed, it lowered growth target results for the development of the electric car industry in the future. All this is from the reason of opening the E-convergence economy over time. It is required that Korea should prepare E-convergence economy. Public regional energy should be present through the consistent selection of development for energy linking E-economy and E-trans distribution. Korea needs to be many difficulties in building the E- infrastructure for ICT Living-Labs. Unlike the Northern Europe it is to prepare the active support of both government and business. The role of the government discovers that the power generation through the quick selection of the industry, as well as to connect with the growth of the smart cities with the EVs industry.

  • This study explored 'One Book, One City' projects which are being spread in Korea, with the perspective to broaden the horizon of 'Library Movement' and 'Reading Campaign' of Korea. 'One Book, One City' projects have been spread in North America during recent years, and they are reported as successful reading campaign in many communities, Many Korean cities are promoting 'One Book, One City' project diversely. This study examined the meaning and value of the projects, and analyzed the present situation of the projects which are being propelled in some cities of Korea. Finally, this study looked into the special features of Korean 'One Book, One City' projects and provided some suggestions for the ways or strategies to develop the 'One Book, One City projects. which are appropriate for the Korean society.

Runoff Prediction from Machine Learning Models Coupled with Empirical Mode Decomposition: A case Study of the Grand River Basin in Canada

  • This study investigates the possibility of coupling empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for runoff prediction from machine learning (ML) models. Here, support vector regression (SVR) and convolutional neural network (CNN) were considered for ML algorithms. Precipitation (P), minimum temperature (Tmin), maximum temperature (Tmax) and their intrinsic mode functions (IMF) values were used for input variables at a monthly scale from Jan. 1973 to Dec. 2020 in the Grand river basin, Canada. The support vector machine-recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) technique was applied for finding the best combination of predictors among input variables. The results show that the proposed method outperformed the individual performance of SVR and CNN during the training and testing periods in the study area. According to the correlation coefficient (R), the EMD-SVR model outperformed the EMD-CNN model in both training and testing even though the CNN indicated a better performance than the SVR before using IMF values. The EMD-SVR model showed higher improvement in R value (38.7%) than that from the EMD-CNN model (7.1%). It should be noted that the coupled models of EMD-SVR and EMD-CNN represented much higher accuracy in runoff prediction with respect to the considered evaluation indicators, including root mean square error (RMSE) and R values.

Uncertainty Evaluation of Baseflow Separation Filter methods: A Case Study of the Urmia Lake Basin in Iran

  • In this study, we evaluated uncertainties in baseflow separation filter methods focusing on changes in recession constant (𝛼) values, which include Lynie & Holick (LH) algorithm, Chapman algorithm, Eckhardt filter, and EWMA filter. Here, we analyzed daily streamflow data at 14 stations in the Urmia Lake basin, Iran, from 2015 to 2019. The 𝛼 values were computed using three different approaches from calculating the slope of a recession curve by averaging the flow over all seasons, a correlation method, and a mean value of the ratio of Qt+1 to Qt. In addition to the 𝛼 values, the BFImax (maximum value of the baseflow index (BFI)) was determined for the Eckhardt filter through the backward filter method. As results, it indicates that the estimated baseflow is dependent upon the selection of filter methods, their parameters, and catchment characteristics at different stations. In particular, the EWMA filter showed the least changes in estimating the baseflow value by changing the 𝛼 value, and the Eckhardt filter and LH algorithm showed the highest sensitivity to this parameter at different stations.
