OBJECTIVES : The objective of this study is to detect road cavities using multi-channel 3D ground penetrating radar (GPR) tests owned by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. METHODS : Ground-penetrating radar tests were conducted on 204 road-cavity test sections, and the GPR signal patterns were analyzed to classify signal shape, amplitude, and phase change. RESULTS : The shapes of the GPR signals of road-cavity sections were circular or ellipsoidal in the plane image of the 3D GPR results. However, in the longitudinal or transverse direction, the signals showed mostly unsymmetrical (or symmetrical in some cases) parabolic shapes. The amplitude of the GPR signals reflected from road cavities was stronger than that from other media. No particular pattern of the amplitude was found because of nonuniform medium and utilities nearby. In many cases where road cavities extended to the bottom of the asphalt concrete layer, the signal phase was reversed. However, no reversed signal was found in subbase, subgrade, or deeper locations. CONCLUSIONS : For detecting road cavities, the results of the GPR signal-pattern analysis can be applied. In general, GPR signals on road cavity-sections had unsymmetrical hyperbolic shape, relatively stronger amplitude, and reversed phase. Owing to the uncertainties of underground materials, utilities, and road cavities, GPR signal interpretation was difficult. To perform quantitative analysis for road cavity detection, additional GPR tests and signal pattern analysis need to be conducted.
Spoofing attacks including meaconing can provide a bogus position to a victim GPS receiver, and those attacks are notably difficult to detect at the point of view on the receiver. Several countermeasure techniques have been studied to detect, classify, and cancel the spoofing signals. Based on the countermeasure techniques, we have developed an anti-spoofing equipment that detects and mitigates or eliminates the spoofing signal based on raw measurements. Although many anti-spoofing techniques have been studied in the literatures, the evaluation test system is not deeply studied to evaluate the anti-spoofing equipment, which includes detection, mitigation, and elimination of spoofing signals. Each study only has a specific test method to verify its anti-spoofing technique. In this paper, we propose the performance evaluation test system that includes both spoofing signal injection system and its injection scenario with the constraints of stand-alone anti-spoofing techniques. The spoofing signal injection scenario is designed to drive a victim GPS receiver that moves to a designed position, where the mitigation and elimination based anti-spoofing algorithms can be successively evaluated. We evaluate the developed anti-spoofing equipment and a commercial GPS receiver using our proposed performance evaluation test system. Although the commercial one is affected by the test system and moves to the designed position, the anti-spoofing equipment mitigates and eliminates the injected spoofing signals as planned. We evaluate the performance of anti-spoofing equipment on the position error of the circular error probability, while injecting spoofing signals.

The Direction-Of-Arrival(DOA) resolution of signals depends on the aperture size of the array. Therefore it is not easy to resolve closely spaced coherent signals impinge on an array with a small radius. In order to overcome the problem, a new method is proposed to use the characteristic of spatial spectrums for arrays which have different aperture sizes after virtually expanding the spacing of original antenna array. In case of coherent signals impinge on an uniform circular array, the perfect DOA resolution capability of 100 % is achieved at the SNR range of -10 dB to 0 dB by the Deterministic Maximum Likelihood(DML) algorithm including the proposed method. On the other hand, the standard DML algorithm can not resolve signals at all at the same SNR.

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) signals were used for corrosion inspection of buried oil and gas pipeline. 3D finite element analysis was used to examine the effects of far and near-side pit depth and tensile stress on MFL signals. Anisotropci materials were used, and the effects of simulated tensile stress on MFL were investigated. The axial and radial MFL signals depended on far and near-side single pit depth and on the bulk stress, but the circumferential MFL signal did not depend on them. The axial and radial MFL signals increased with increasing pit depth and the bulk stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was scarcely changed.

This paper investigates the ground reflection effect on the channel capacity of an orbital angular momentum (OAM) multi-mode transmission system that uses uniform circular array (UCA) antennas. The ground-reflected signals cause inter-mode interferences between the OAM modes, and lead to system performance degradation. The OAM multi-mode channel capacity severely degrades owing to the ground reflection as the transmission distance increases. Increasing the UCA height above the ground and using highly directive array elements can mitigate the ground reflection effect and increase the channel capacity.

Effects of rotary oscillation on unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed for the flow at Re=100 in the range of 0.2<$\Omega$<2.5 and 0.02<$St_f$<0.8, where $\Omega$ and $St_f$ are, respectively, the maximum rotation velocity and rotation frequency normalized by the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. Results show that rotary oscillation has significant effects on the flow. When the rotation frequency is near the natural vortex-shedding frequency, lock-on occurs and the lock-on frequency range becomes wider as the rotation velocity increases. In a certain range of the rotation frequency and velocity, modulations in the velocity, lift and drag signals occur and this modulation frequency is expressed as a linear combination of the rotation frequency and vortex-shedding frequency. The mean drag and amplitude of the lift fluctuations show local minima near the boundary between the lock-on non and lock-on regions.
Lock-on characteristics of the flow around a circular cylinder performing a rotationally oscillation with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally using flow visualization and hot-wire measurements. Dominant parameters are Reynolds number (Re), amplitude of oscillation $(\theta_A)$, and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f\;/\;f_n$, where $f_f$ is the forcing frequency and if is the natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14\times10^3,\;\pi/15\leq\theta_A\leq\pi/3$, and $F_R=1.0$. The effects of this active control technique on the lock-on flow regime of the cylinder wake were evaluated through wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotary oscillation modified the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon was found to occur in the range of frequency encompassing the natural vortex shedding frequency. In addition, when the amplitude of oscillation is less than a certain value, the lock-on phenomenon was occurred only at $F_R=1.0$. The lock-on range expanded and vortex formation length decreased as the amplitude of oscillation increases. The rotary oscillation generated small-scale vortex structure just near the cylinder surface.

In this paper, we propose a design of GPS anti-jamming system and its operational method, which can effectively suppress interference and jamming signals induced in GPS receiver. The 7-array antenna used in the proposed system is composed of conventional 6 equi-spaced circular elements with one element on the center of antenna and can be efficiently operated under power-constrained conditions. Futhermore, in this paper, we analyze the structure and complexity of STAP and SFAP which are well known techniques in adaptive array antenna signal processing, and we compare the BER performances between STAP and SFAP in various jamming environment based on the same complexity.
This paper proposes a two-stage imaging approach for quantitative inspection of damages in metallic plates using the fundamental anti-symmetric mode of ($A_0$) Lamb wave. The proposed approach employs a number of transducers to transmit and receive $A_0$ Lamb wave pulses, and hence, to sequentially scan the plate structures before and after the presence of damage. The approach is applied to image the corrosion damages, which are simplified as a reduction of plate thickness in this study. In stage-one of the proposed approach a damage location image is reconstructed by analyzing the cross-correlation of the wavelet coefficient calculated from the excitation pulse and scattered wave signals for each transducer pairs to determine the damage location. In stage-two the Lamb wave diffraction tomography is then used to reconstruct a thickness reduction image for evaluating the size and depth of the damage. Finite element simulations are carried out to provide a comprehensive verification of the proposed imaging approach. A number of numerical case studies considering a circular transducer network with eight transducers are used to identify the damages with different locations, sizes and thicknesses. The results show that the proposed methodology is able to accurately identify the damage locations with inaccuracy of the order of few millimeters of a circular inspection area of $100mm^2$ and provide a reasonable estimation of the size and depth of the damages.

This study describes a method of measurement and verification of array manifold of uniform circular array antenna applicable to multistatic Passive Coherent Location(PCL) system using FM broadcasting. In an environment of outdoor test where FM broadcast signals are scattered, array manifold measurement methods using network analyzer and multi-channel digital receiver are introduced. Also, the descriptions and solutions for the test limits of each measurement method and the considerations affecting the measurement accuracy are presented. In addition, to verify the validity of the measured array manifold, the gain and phase difference were compared with the array manifold data obtained by EM simulation, and the effectiveness and accuracy of the measured array manifolds were compared and analyzed by estimating the direction of arrival of the FM broadcast signal received from the multistatic PCL system.
