  • A two-dimensional Stokes flow past a circular disk in a circular tube is analyzed. The circular disk is located coaxially with the circular tube and the Hagen-Poiseuille flow exists at upstream and downstream far from the circular disk. The Stokes approximation is used and the flow is investigated analytically by using the method of eigenfunction expansion and the method of least square. From the analysis, the stream function and the pressure of the flow field are obtained, and the streamlines and pressure distribution are shown. Also, the pressure and shear stress distributions on the circular disk and circular tube wall are calculated, and shown for some typical radii of the circular disk. The additional pressure drop induced by the disk and the drag force exerted on the disk are compared as functions of the radius of the circular disk, and it is shown that the shear force on the wall of the tube increases due to the disk.

  • For a flow normal to a circular disk, the flow separation occurs from the edge of the disk and the flow recirculation zone exists behind the disk. Many existing studies conducted simulations of flow normal to a circular disk under low Reynolds numbers. Some studies performed LES or DES simulations under high Reynolds numbers. However, comparative study for different RANS models for high Reynolds numbers is very limited. This study presents numerical simulations of a flow normal to a circular disk using Realizable k-ε model and SST k-ω model. The recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient were compared with the experimental data. The SST k-ω model showed the excellent predictions for the recirculation bubble length and drag coefficient.

  • The present paper deals with the determination of temperature, displacement and thermal stresses in a semi-infinite hollow circular disk due to internal heat generation within it. Initially the disk is kept at arbitrary temperature F(r, z). For times t > 0 heat is generated within the circular disk at a rate of g(r, z, t) $Btu/hr.ft^3$. The heat flux is applied on the inner circular boundary (r = a) and the outer circular boundary (r = b). Also, the lower surface (z = 0) is kept at temperature $Q_3(r,t)$ and the upper surface ($Z={\infty}$) is kept at zero temperature. Hollow circular disk extends in the z-direction from z = 0 to infinity. The governing heat conduction equation has been solved by using finite Hankel transform and the generalized finite Fourier transform. As a special case mathematical model is constructed for different metallic disk have been considered. The results are obtained in series form in terms of Bessel's functions. These have been computed numerically and illustrated graphically.

  • The mechanical properties such as the Young's modulus, damping ratio, vibration mode and hardness of the disk materials heat-treated under various conditions are measured, and the relations between there properties and the cutting characteristics such as early tip fracture are examined. The results obtained from this study are as follows. The circular saw with the V-Cr added disk has higher young's modulus and damping ratio than the saw with STC5 disk, preventing the early fracture of tungsten carbide due to the above properties. The circular saw with the disk which is subjected to the heat treatment at the quenching temperature of $830^{\circ}C$ and at the temperature of $550^{\circ}C$ have the best tool life and surface roughness.

  • A Green's function approach is adopted to solve the two-dimensional thermoelastic problem of a thin hollow circular disk. Initially, the disk is kept at temperature T0(r, z). For times t > 0, the inner and outer circular edges are thermally insulated and the upper and lower surfaces of the disk are subjected to convection heat transfer with convection coefficient hc and fluid temperature T∞, while the disk is also subjected to the axisymmetric heat source. As a special case, different metallic disks have been considered. The results for temperature and thermal deflection has been computed numerically and illustrated graphically.

  • In this paper, an elliptic disk-loaded antenna having frequency shift characteristics with the same height of the simple monopole is studied. The proposed antenna is composed of an ellitptic disk with arbitrary ellipticity ratio. The eigenmode representations in each region of given structure are useful for the analysis of the canonical monopoly, circular disk-loaded monopole and circular dielectric-loaded top-hat monopole antennas using the artificical ground plane. The comparison between the elliptic and circular disk-leaded antenna is carried out. The effect of the shape of the loaded disk and the ellipticity ratio of the loaded disk on the input impedances, the return loss and frequency shift is also studied. We have computed the given structures using the CST MW Studio version 3.0. The typical blade antenna can be obtained by modifying and extending the proposed structure with the λ/4 balun removing the stray capacitances existing between the loaded disk and the ground plane.

  • The closed-form expressions of the vector gravity and gravity gradient tensor due to a circular disk are derived. The gravity potential due to a circular disk with a constant density is defined for a cylindrical system. Then, the vector gravity is derived by differentiating the gravity potential with respect to cylindrical coordinates. The radial component of the vector gravity in the cylindrical system is converted into horizontal gravity components in the Cartesian system. Finally, the gravity gradient tensor due to a circular disk is obtained by differentiating the vector gravity with respect to the Cartesian coordinates.

  • A method, so called 'successive cracking method,' for measuring residual stresses in a circular disk is proposed. In this method residual stresses are evaluated using a fracture mechanics approach, that is, the strains measured at a point on a edge of the disk as a crack is introduced and extended from the edge are used to deduce the residual stress distribution which existed in the uncracked disk. Through finite element analysis and comparative experiments with generally used sectioning method, the successive cracking method is shown to be valid, simple and effective to measure 2-dimensional residual stress distribution in a circular disk.

  • Cam mechanisms are used commonly in many automatic machinery. Disk cam mechanisms has 4 different types according to the different types of followers. The motion characteristics of the cam mechanisms depend on the shape of the cam and the type of the follower. This paper performs the motion analysis for a disk cam and follower mechanism using a circular arc method and a coordinate transformation method in order to find a contact point of the cam and follower. The velocity is calculated by using the instant velocity concept. Also, the acceleration is determined on using the central difference method. As the results, this paper presents the original curve and the analyzed curve for the motion analysis of the disk cam for an example.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop for fully developed turbulent flow in a tube with circumferential fins and circular were experimentally studied. The various spacing and sizes of circumferential fins and circular disks were selected as design parameters, while the effects of these parameters on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop were investigated. In order to quantify the effect of heat transfer enhancement and the increase of pressure drop due to the fins and disks in a tube, the Nusselt numbers and the friction factors for various configurations and operating conditions were compared to those for a corresponding smooth tube. The results showed that the heat transfer rate was significantly enhanced by increasing the height of circumferential fins and decreasing the pitch of circumferential fins. On the other hand, the influence of the disk size and the fin-disk spacing were not significant. Based on the experimental results, a correlation for estimating the Nusselt number was suggested.
